Any form of restraint that holds the body in an open, exposed position, is extremely intense. And extremely fun
Spreader bars are most useful when the sub is standing with their arms held over their head, and we want to keep their legs open wide. The bar not only serves that purpose, but also provides a tie/support point for any kind of pole that we might want to secure the bottom of, e.g. one holding a dildo or a dildo and vibrator taped together. We can use just one at the ankles, or another at the knees as well to prevent the sub from twisting their hips and closing their knees.
When the sub is lying down or is on their back, I generally find rope bondage more effective because the spreader bar gets in the way of my access
The psychological impact of being held open like that is incredible. It is a very exposed position. Tying a sub spread eagle on their back and then covering their eyes (and if I am in a real mood, putting earphones in playing music that prevents them from hearing anything) is a favorite.
