Let's lose some weight together

I just thought I would throw another male voice out there,

I need to loose about 40 lbs and train up, my goal is to do a triathlon...maybe if i can keep from drowning!

mostly i hate not feeling like i can take any pics for my thread because i have gotten to pudgy. I know people wont be too cruel, but i am too cruel to myself just looking at the pics to size them. Grumble... especially now that they are pulling down any pictures with "aroused genitalia" I mean at least i had one body part i was kinda proud of!

Alrighty then...

I made it through all the posts without replying to everything that needs some personal addresssing. :D

First, Exercise doesn't cause weight loss. It grows muscle!

Now don't get me wrong, we all need to be in better shape to avoid health problems. Heck, the heart needs to be in damn good shape!

Weight loss is a matter of healthy eating... PERIOD!!!

We all learned to enjoy bad foods.

Eating a slice or two of Pizza ain't too bad, but the entire pizza is what is killing us all!

It is portions and calories my friends.

First tip...

I was a soda pop junkie and I gave it up for Fruit2o.

Flavored water with zero calories, zero carbs, but loads of flavor!

Second tip...

http://www.calorieking.com/

Now, I do have the assistance of a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness who has kept me focused on changing my body fat mass while working out to gain muscle mass.

Purge the house of bad stuff and get better foods.

Need something sweet yet satisfying?

Purchase some Dryers Popsicles... 40 calories each!!!

Now I do like my liquor but using Calorie King I learned that each shot of Gentleman Jack whiskey is 107 calories each and a Mikes Hard Lemonade is 245 calories each.

107 x 5 = 535 = 2 x 245 = 1,025

That is almost half as many calories as a 14" pepperoni pizza at 2647!!!

http://www.calorieking.com/foods/ca...MTI0NjczNzM0JnBvcz0yJnBhcj0ma2V5PXBpenph.html

I am limited to 2200 calories per day but then again I am a man working on muscle gain.

I'm loosing fat yet gaining muscle and at 51 years of age. If I can do this anyone can...

O.K. at 5' 10" I was 196 pounds and since November I'm at 186.6 pounds.

I have lost over 3" from my waist yet added inches to my arms, chest, shoulders and legs.

I love Fruit2O...don't drink liquor...and will definitely visit that site...

Excellent thoughts and advice... :rose:

We should get together and take pictures and do the editing for the other person!! That way we wouldnt have to look at our own pictures :D
Nothing makes me want to run for a snack like looking at pictures of myself.

of course being helpful is the only reason I would suggest that, not because I have spent the past 10 minutes drooling over your pics ;)

Um...thiat is not quite true

aerobic exercise DOES cause weight loss, it increases the number of calories you burn, as long as you dont replace those calories with food you will loose weight.
In fact if you take it to an extreme exercise can cause muscle loss as your body starts breaking them down too keep feeeding itself. (you would have to be starving)

Now lifting weights, anerobic exercies, does grow muscle.

Weight loss is a matter of healthy eating... PERIOD!!!

Not quite that either. Weight loss is a matter of eating less than you burn, PERIOD!!!
The fastest i have lost weight i was eating pizza, chips, chinese buffet, ice cream.... but i was burning 5000 cal per day, so i was still losing weight.

I don't like any of the flavored water. I guess because I like the taste of the real thing.

It is hard for me.
With all respect to the men on the thread, women's metabolic processes are far more variable with age and hormonal changes. Doesn't mean you can't lose weight, means you have to nod in the direction of knowing your changing body and figure out the right way to do it. Lots more activity, muscle-building exercise, balanced eating...all the boring stuff that we know works.

I've lost about 40 pounds doing a combination of the things posted here over the last year. My husband, who is 52, lost 15 pounds in three months doing the same things. I'm lucky that I love drinking water and enjoy working out at anything that doesn't require me to run (bad knees + big boobs = not a runner). My newest thing is my iPod - put it on for the day and I know I dance off a couple of hundred calories.

Nice thread! A surprise to find here... :D

If any of you ladies would like, I'll help you reach your "Target Heart Rate". Just a little sexercise program might be what the Dr. ordered!

(just trying to be helpful!!!)

Just thought I'd check in for the day...smiles

raspberry water by fruit2o
citrus blend by aquafina
lemon by fruit2o

those are my favorites...

what was said about men's metabolism being different, them losing weight different and women having the hormonal shifts and changes is very true...

it's also very true that you have to find something that you enjoy, something that is going to personally benefit you because what works for one person, may not work for the next person...

it is about portion size, burning off more than you consume, staying hydrated, staying motivated, and support...

i read an article yesterday about big people having larger than life personalities and having such wonderful gifts to offer, but that we (they) obsess so much about our weight and worry so much about how others see us that we lose confidence in our talents and gifts...and it's not hard for us to obsess like we do when all around us, on tv, in movies, are 98 pound women...and the news constantly tells us how fat we are...we take it personally, we think about it, worry about it, stress about it...we wonder how our friends really see us, we wonder about how the men in our lives or the men we want in our lives see us...and we see ourselves in the most negative light. Perhaps we need to start focusing more on our unique selves, our hobbies, our interests, our gifts and talents and less on our bodies and how they look. Afterall, you can change the outside appearance, but your true self, your authentic self, will still be the same...and besides, if we focus on the positive good in our lives and in what we have to offer the world, maybe we'll notice a change in our bodies, too... Be conscious of it, pay attention to it, but don't obsess over it...

Yes, i know it's some positive mumbo-jumbo and for some it won't mean anything, but there may be someone that it touches, that it speaks to.

And I've stayed within my points for the last 2 days now...woohoo! :nana:

Drinks

I changed the evening beer for mineral water topped up with some lemon juice.

I am learning to eat the right kind of food, my second stage should be to start reducing serving size.

. Weight loss is 100 times harder to make happen now, then it used to be.

Wow ,isn't that the truth . Used to be I could lose weight at the drop of a hat. Just eat a little less ,drink a little less, work out a little. Now,it's become really hard to lose. With the ironic flipside ,its really easy to gain .

This is a good thread idea ,Pink. Thank you. If it helps a person to stay motivated ,it's a good thing .

Yea Pink!!!

What a great idea! I'll sign on for this.

I have a few suggestions that always helped me out -

IceBreakers Water - it comes in lemon, lime and orange flavors and isn't overly sweet at all. It actually tastes like water with lemon squeezed in it. (of course it's cheaper to just by lemons and limes...)

Flavored seltzer - it's got the fizz of soda, but not the calories. When I was on Weight Watchers I swore by this. Drank it all the time.

Skinny Cow ice cream - yum! (and if you do Weight Watchers, 1 sandwich is 2 points)

I used to take 1 day (usually my weigh in day - after the weigh in) off of the diet. Not to go crazy, but to have the things I wouldn't normally eat - popcorn with butter as opposed to the 94% fat free popcorn, dessert, etc. It made it easier passing on something during the week if I knew I could have it later on.

Crystal Light - I've tried the generic brands, but some of them just don't taste the same. And crystal light has a decaf iced tea.

Ice Pops. seriously. Good for when you want something sweet.

If you are a major chocoholic buy a bag of fun sized candies and keep them in the fridge. One or two a day won't wreck your diet and are good for controlling cravings.

Also, when I would have a good week at weigh in, I would treat myself. After so many pounds lost (say 5 or 7), I would get a manicure. When I lost 20 I went out and bought myself a new bra or something like that. My thinking was I did good, so I get a treat.

It's not an easy thing at all - much easier to put on than take off, but as I was told - I didn't put the weight on overnight, and I shouldn't expect it to come off overnight either.

These are excellent suggestions. When I went to weightwatchers meetings I learned some of these and they do work...smiles

I haven't seen the IceBreakers water in the stores in my area...

Thanks Belle... :rose:

I wish I knew enough about nutrition to help everyone find what they need to eat and loose weight.

I do have three reasonable meals per day and an afternoon snack with a max of 2200 calories per day.

Now that I'm not drinking except on weekends and much less I can have three or four popcicles per day and still be under my max calories... :nana:

Another suggestion:

Cereal. If you're really hungry, go for a bowl of cereal. Limit the high sugar cereals - kind of wasted calories - and instead go for a bowl of Cheerios or Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies. If I have to much at lunch, I'll bypass dinner for a big bowl of cereal.

Oatmeal is good too.

Very true.

I have Cheerios and milk for breakfast at 150 calories. :)

Weight isnt the most important thing!
I've met here and in R/L alot of Lit people and everyone here is beautiful to me,
no matter what their frame size!

on demand

I know this will be different in other areas of the country ,but the local cable provider here has hundreds of on demand exercise and nutrional programs all free for subscribers. They cover the whole gamut of exercise from Yoga and pilates and dance steps ,to kick boxing and aerobics ,to weight training and some really good sports specfiic training programs with top level trainers , if you that would be of interest to you (or maybe for your kids). So if you wanted to do some cross training or try something new and you didn't feel like joining a group or shelling out 40 bucks for the DVD. It may be available for you free. They are normally formatted into quick workouts ,about ten minutes ,to a half an hour .

They also have a lot of nutritional programming . Things like metabolism changes ,dieting techniques ,etc. But they aren't selling anything. So no hype. Hopefully there maybe something similar in your area.
