Let's lose some weight together

i'm getting ready to make out my first grocery list since i've started watching what i'm eating. Crvygrl is helping me a bit with this new endeavor i've started. Thanks so much to her.

What are some must have items in my grocery list for this month, people. Help me out here.

bottled water
skim milk
whole wheat bread
what else?
Make sure your bread is whole grain. Much better for you. :)

Also, if you crave carbs, especially chips, the 100 cal packs are great to have around. Such as Sun Chips, Doritos, Cheetos even - they all are doing the 100 cal packs now.

If you like oatmeal, look for Quaker's Weight Control oatmeal. It has extra protein in it - it works great as my "entree" in the morning's (I sub it in for a NS breakfast entree), have a protein item with it (such as a non-fat yogurt) and a fruit. The South Beach breakfast bars are also a good thing to have around (also a good sub for a NS breakfast entree).

If you eat salads, the Kraft Light Done Right salad dressings are pretty good. I don't like the non-fat dressings very much.

What does NS stand for?

oops.. sorry.. in my first post here, I was talking about Nutrisystem. That's what the NS stands for.

In their program, you have their "entree", and supplement it with additional protein and/or veggies and/or fruit.

Hey, Pink...

The best advice I got was to think about adding things, not losing things. Add veggies and fruit and whole grains and low fat dairy to your plate so there is less room for...alfredo. :D Just read lots of labels. You want fiber in almost everything you eat (except dairy).

So with that in mind...

I bought the Healthy Harvest high-fiber and high-protein pasta. It's great.

Frozen veggie combos that you like are fab. It's not realistic for me to ALWAYS have enough perfect produce around, and for me the trick has been to eat more fiber, low fat, lots of fresh food (not processed) - I feel better and I lose weight. So the frozen veggies help. I buy a mexican veggie blend that I throw in with brown or wild rice mix and some Rotel tomatoes (or if someone less adventuresome is cooking HE throws the tomatoes and a bag of frozen veggies into the pan of prepared Chicken Helper Chicken Enchilada... :D ).

Weight Watchers is big on "zero point" soup - which is basically a tomato based soup that has a bunch of veggies in it. Fills you, is good for you... there are lots of variations around. I make one with whole wheat tortellini and low-sodium chicken broth, some fresh or frozen onions, zuchini (it's late, I can't spell) and hot red pepper flakes. Yum. Add beans if you like 'em.

Same with frozen fruit and yogurt so I can make smoothies - berries are especially good for you, I hit Costco for their huge bag of frozen mixed berries.

I sub ground turkey for ground beef in lots of things.

I mix real eggs and those cartons of egg whites (1/2 and 1/2) for scrambles and omelets.

There is also this concept at WW of "shopping the perimeter" - the idea being that the stuff on the outside edges of the store (except the bakery!) are better for you than the stuff in the middle.

Baked potato chips!!!
Soy crisps.
Crystal Light. I make it by the pitcher and have the little thingies to put in your water bottle.

That's probably enough for now. It's really good to plan!!

:rose:

With all respect to the men on the thread, women's metabolic processes are far more variable with age and hormonal changes. Doesn't mean you can't lose weight, means you have to nod in the direction of knowing your changing body and figure out the right way to do it. Lots more activity, muscle-building exercise, balanced eating...all the boring stuff that we know works.

I've lost about 40 pounds doing a combination of the things posted here over the last year. My husband, who is 52, lost 15 pounds in three months doing the same things. I'm lucky that I love drinking water and enjoy working out at anything that doesn't require me to run (bad knees + big boobs = not a runner). My newest thing is my iPod - put it on for the day and I know I dance off a couple of hundred calories.

Nice thread! A surprise to find here... :D

Maybe I should check my equipment then, i seem to have as much trouble losing weight as a lot of women I know...

as for today, I got ambushed by a chicken biscut on my way to work!! I guess its salads for me for the rest of the day to make up

I just checked, I am still male, and still struggling with weight ;)

i think srsly that i cannot judge my body at all right now. Not until i lose a great deal of weight will i beable to see it myself.

Hope everyone had a great day. i went grocery shopping today and got a few things. i need so much food that i knew i could never get it all in one trip. i will have to go back Monday and get some more groceries. :)

i'm still doing really well on drinking water. my tummy seems to have slimmed up just a bit, i am hoping it's not my imagination from wanting it so badly. i'm drinking about a liter of water everyday, plus skim milk everyday on top of that. i'm finding myself drinking more and being thristier for it throughout the day. Before i started this, i was never like that. i hardly drank anything other them pop and milk.

Someone just informed me that buttsecks if good for weight loss. The things you learn on Lit.

Good, you discovered water! Pop & milk are just about our worst enemies, I am drinking about 2 lt. of water/mineral water and tea, no alcohol during the week (looking forward to Friday night) food low fat meats lots of salads (no factory dressings) and low GI carbos, lost over 16Lbs. in five weeks, now slowing down, aim to loose 1 to 2 lbs. per week

Congrats, that is wonderful. :)

Well, i am drinking skim milk now, along with water. i still have a long way to go food wise, but i am doing the best i can. i am eating smaller meals, lighter meals at least. Tonight i had a lean cuisine and some soup. :)

Use salsa. I used to put it on chicken and fish and potatoes and eggs. Use it as a dip with veggies (or use fat free ranch or ff creamy italian.) But salsa is fantastic on so many things.

Now, with a grammar goddess in the neighbourhood, I have to be careful.

As you say Pink, the size of the servings are important, for the time I am keeping them large, but filled with calorie empty food, mainly green stuff.

The advice that I was given by a nutritionist was never to buy anything pre-prepared such as salad dressings, mayonnaise etc.
My preferred dressing: olive oil + balsamic vinegar & with a bit of chilli salsa (home made)

It's past time I stop reading and start contributing to this thread. GREAT thread, BTW, Pink!

I joined Curves this time last year and by the end of July, I had lost 21 pounds and 11.25 inches. I felt better physically, mentally AND emotionally. I stopped going when I started to have what I though was stomach problems. Come to find out I have grown the mother of all gallstones, and that was what was makin me so sick. I had my gallbladder removed last September and have been putting off returning to Curves ever since, waiting for a burst of motivation to kick in.

Well, I got that motivation at my doctors office today. I am on the verge of being diabetic. She is giving me 3 months to change my way of life or I will be going down the diabetic road. My Mom, her brother and their mother are/were all diabetics with my uncle loosing a couple toes last year. That's enough motivation for me.

I was fortunate enough last year when joining Curves to talk my best friend into joining with me. She still goes, but is down to once a week. We are returning to our 3 workouts a week tomorrow. After reading {{{{{Razzy's}}}}} comments about NS, and asking her some questions, I got online last week and ordered a 2 week supply of their food. I was able to choose the entree's and look forward to giving them a try. If it's food that I can eat, I will be ordering a months supply.

Long story short, I'm ready to get back in the game. My goal is to lose 20 pounds, once I reach that goal, I will reset for another 20 pounds. WHEN I reach that goal, I will be back to the size I was when I got married. p

That is great, good luck to you. We have just about the same weight goal. Right now, i am striving to lose 20 pounds, after that we will go from there. :) i'm really scared to weigh myself, incase i've not really lost any weight yet. It seems like my tummy has slimmed a bit but certainly no major loss yet. This is my second week watching what i eat. i splurged a little tonight on my snack but i had a salad with fat free dressing for supper and i am finishing up my water before i head to bed. :)

Was anyone else afraid to weigh themselves when they were first starting out? i'm seriously not going to weigh myself until i am sure i've got a good headstart going on losing weight.

Do you have room for one more? I'm working on changing some habits with the idea of living a healthier lifestyle (and losing 10% of my current body weight).

Please, please, please, join us. :) i'm sitting here drinking my water before i go to bed. i am only at drinking 1 liter a day so far. Hopefully, as time goes on, i'll drink more and more.

Thanks!

I think with water, it's wise to work your way up to your water-drinking goal. It really has helped me. It's been better than caffeine in terms of keeping me alert and energized.

i used to drink 2 or 3 cans of Mountain Dew a day, i've since cut that down to about 1 a day. i may end up stop drinking it period. i've substituted sparkling water instead.

I had to start off with lemon in my water at first... couldn't do sparkling water for some reason.

Now i bought some at the store the other day, regular water flavored and didn't like it at all.

I was so picky I had to buy lemons and add them myself... how's that for picky?! I was glad that Lexan bottles exist so I could put lemon chunks in the water.
