a hand in the hair equals a hand between your legs... simple cause and effect. You know

Someone(AF) told me you left!! Happy to see you!

While I might normally agree with that statement, and simply getting dressed wouldn't make me speechless, the manner in which you did, is what caused the LS effect.

Getting undressed? That would cause speechlessness no matter the manner. Not reactionless, but speechless, yup.

...I'm sorry, am I interrupting a pillow fight? I'll come back later.

I am in France right now. Are there any experiments you would like me to conduct whilst I'm here? I didn't bring a cheese detector or a thermometer, unfortunately, but I am open to suggestions.

Yes. There is one I would love you to try this... I have always been curious as to the effects of deodorant on the French. It is something that has never been tried before. I have a hypothesis that they have severe allergic reactions.

If you have time, I'd be happy for you to see if there is any act of kindness that could cause a Frenchman to be polite.

I think these would be real breakthroughs in science.

OK. I have a week. I think that will be enough for the politeness test. I can report a sympathetic Frenchman already today, but it is a rather extreme day :)() so he may be an outlier.

Deodorant though? That might need to be a longitudinal study... :D

A sympathetic Frenchman? Was he trying to get into your knickers? I suspect so. The sympathy was not genuine.

I'm quite sure deodorant to a Frenchman is like garlic to a vampire. Silver to a werewolf. Or dignity to a hipster. The two shall not cross paths.

Omg yes. Please report back on how lovely the French are, when conversing in their native tongue, with a nonjudgmental global citizen. Also, please let me know how one might smell after cooking ratatouille, working at a parfumery, drinking a nice Côte du Rhone by the riverbank, or rolling in fields of lavender.

Apparently you've never been to France. Maybe you also dream of the kind New Yorkers in the most magical city on earth.

I sense sniping, now cut that out or I'll cancel free for all Friday. I swear to god I will. Don't make me come back here again for this.

Hey hey hey. I resemble that remark!

You forgot to say "Don't make me pull this thread over! You'll regret it if I do!"

What is your cut off for when you are willing to help someone? Helping is easy when it's convenient. It's also easy when it's someone you know and like. But what if it starts to infringe on your plans? What if it isn't your best friend? What if it takes more time than you can easily give?

Where do you draw the line in being helpful? Does that line change when you are at work? Do you help out of sense of duty or out of compassion? Is there a difference? Does it matter?

I suffer from CHS. Chronic Helper Syndrome. I have a hard time saying no to people who need my help. And if it's in my power to do it, I usually will. The only times I step back are when I am feeling overwhelmed. Or if my kids need to come first. I'm practicing the word NO and am getting better at it.

I'm with beachbaby. ..I'm a chronic helper. It comes from being younger around a volatile dad. If I could anticipate early how to help to difuse a situation I would.
As an adult I still like to help to keep people 'calm'...
I only really regret helping if the person blatantly wastes my time by not helping themselves as well. For instance...this week at worked we were slammed. The new girl needed help and as I started to show her what to do she walked off to text her husband while I finished the task....
*not impressed*

My name is DarkSimian, and I suffer from CHS. I've actually earned the nickname "the Fixer", because, if you f*** up, call DS, he'll fix it. And sometimes it sucks....because you do get taken advantage of, and you do have to sacrifice sometimes. But, I can't help myself. "If you got a problem, yo, I'll solve it. Check out the beat while the DJ revolves it...."

I've always considered the idea of helping when it's convenient to be akin to being a fair weathered friend. I will help someone I know, as long as it doesn't encroach on my helping someone else. I don't mind if it impacts my schedule, but if it impacts another, then I don't help.

I feel pretty much the same for a stranger; A stranger is just a friend you haven't met, yet.

My brother is pretty much the opposite of me. The last time he was visiting, I was driving him around (he can't drive), and we were coming back from some store. There was a woman on the side of the road, and it looked like she had car trouble. Just before I was going to pull over to help her, he says "You're not going to help her, right?" Though he phrased it as a question, it wasn't a question. So I didn't help her. I didn't say anything, but I felt bad that I didn't help.

According to my code, if helping her encroached on my brothers schedule then I am obligated not to help. The trouble is, he didn't have a schedule. Another of my other codes is that a guest is given every courtesy.

I don't live my life expecting others to live by my codes, but it surefire sucks donkey dick when they don't.

I'm a reasonable helper. Sometimes people don't want to be helped. And for those people, why would I waste my time? It's like throwing good money after bad. If someone doesn't want help, it's useless to try. I'm not saying don't try. At least once. But I am saying it's useless. Because, unless someone wants help, it is wasted efforts.

Three questions I try to ask myself before helping someone:

Did they ask for help?
Is it reasonable, and something I can actually do?
If I give the help, will it impinge on my sanity and serenity?

  • Not everyone that needs help, asks for help.
  • Sometimes a lift to the gas station is all someone on the side of the road expects.
  • Now this is making me scratch my head in perplexity. (Okay, it might also be a sign of dandruff.) Could you define an instance where this applies?

Number 2 is where I draw the line though. I generally will not stop to help someone on the side of the road, if I'm by myself. Safety first...

1-If they're not asking for help, yet I'm offering, it's no longer about them. It's ultimately about me, and my ego, wanting to feel good inside. Offering help when someone doesn't want it, or can't ask for it themselves, is enabling. It also deprives another person of the dignity to make their own choices (e.g. To *not* ask for help, or not want help).

2-If someone needs a ride, asks for it, and I can do it, then that passes the reasonability test.

3- If I can provide the help without it making me crazy inside, then it's a go. If the help requested requires I rearrange a bunch of plans, miss work, spend money I don't really have, impacts my kid... If it's just too stressful then, no, sorry, I can't do it.

....Just my opinion, and my experience, after dealing with these types of situations for decades.

No, I get that and I don't fault anybody that thinks of themself first, because no one else will think of you first.

I guess I'm just used to people who are too proud (or too stupid) to ask for help.
There was a lady walking with her child on an off ramp. I remembered passing by a car on the shoulder and put two and two together. Stopped, put the car in reverse (on the shoulder (Beeeep! BEEEEEP! ..and you! and you!)) and backed up to offer a lift. I was in Florida at the time and it isn't known for having a gas station or phone anywhere near an exit. In this case I knew it was at least another three miles to either). It was also dusk and they weren't wearing white or light colored clothing, thus they were a walking target.
She wasn't hitchhiking, she didn't ask for help. It wasn't about me or my ego. I guess you could say it's about my conscience; I'd hate to read about them being in a hit and run accident.
Another time there was a drunk couple with her on his shoulders. Did they ask for help? Nope. It was an accident waiting to happen. If they fell forward, their hands SHOULD catch them. Fall to either side? Their shoulders should stop harm. Fall backwards? Spine and head trauma. So that's where I positioned myself. Sure enough, within 5 minutes, they were falling backwards and I was there to catch their fall.
I wasn't looking for thanks or hero worship. I kinda skulked off to a corner and don't think that was about my ego.

Your two goes back to my one. Sometimes people don't ask for help to just use a phone.

When I was 16, I lived in a three building complex. One night, I heard a woman yelling for help. I went to my mother and step-father and asked "what should we do? (how to help)" Both of their apathetic NY-er attitudes were "it's probably some kids playing around. Don't get involved!"
The next day, I found out it was a mother who was asking for help because her daughter, in a fit of depression had tried to jump off the balcony of their 18th floor apartment. The mother grabbed her daughter's ankle and was holding onto her waiting for help (after half an hour (!!!) it finally came, but that's besides the point).

My point is, I didn't help when I could have or should have and ever since then I don't wait to hear someone ask for help to offer it. So, I guess partly, you are right about it being about me, but it isn't ego, but conscience.

Ah! Now your three makes sense, and I thank you for making me scratch my head ...less.

I'm not challenging your opinions, just discussing them.

As a guy who is more rugged than the back ass of a mountain, I wouldn't even stop to help someone on the side of the road, unless they were on fire or something. Then I might. But I just cannot imagine a doing it. Not because I'm a selfless bastard, but because I'm pretty sure that there are lots of Daley guys wanting to get their junk in my trunk. And that is a no no for me. I have a very strong anti-rape Pmann policy on my books and I tend to stick to it well.

It sucks that that's how that happens. But I just think it's relatively unsafe. It could be a total loon wanting to make Pmann skin lampshades. Or a couch, love seat and sofa out of the skin from my donger. And with the leftovers they may re-upholster their car. That's just not a risk I'm willing to take.
