I took it as the age old argument of Perception vs. Reality. Whether reality is absolute....

Gotta appreciate his way with words.

Here's a question for anyone to discuss if they like. I have a big pet peeve about conversion over to metric (in case you didn't notice from my last comment).

Here is the conundrum:
All the world is converting over top metric and even the US government is trying to strong arm it's people into accepting this standard. (I can discuss at greater length if any question that statement. It isn't recent or a result of one administration alone.)

(Read the following blabber or just jump down to "Here's the question")

The point is, let's look at time. Time is based on how fast the earth rotates around on it's axis. The earth spins and one full rotation is called a day, but why are there 24 hours in a day? Because the earth is approximately 24,000 MILES in circumference at the equator and it spins at 1,000 MILES an HOUR. Thereby we have 24 hours in a day.

Here's the sad fact. In actuality, the earth is actually closer to 25,000 miles in circumference and if you covert the circumference over to metric, the earth is almost exactly 40,000 kilometers in diameter (40,050 if I remember correctly).

So... yes, I'm getting closer to asking a question... In that light, should we have 40 hour clocks? (no, that isn't the question) Well, that answer might be better explained by saying that a day isn't strictly defined by how many MILES the earth is round. It's based on perception. (that seems like a familiar statement, doesn't it?)

40 hour days doesn't coexist with the whole "metric" world. Metric is defined on units of 100 or principles of 10. However, since 40 isn't very "metric", 20 is a principle of 40, and since our current imperial clock is based on a two-pass method, we could say that a day is 20 metric hours long, and make clocks 10 metric hours in duration which is similar to what we already understand. That would also bring it back to a very metric-like concept of "10."

In relation, metric hours would be broken down into 100 metric minutes and a metric minute would be broken down into 100 metric seconds. For illumination:
one metric hour = one imperial hour and 12 imperial minutes (or 72 imperial minutes)
one metric minute (@100 per metric hour) = 43.2 imperial seconds
one metric second (@100 per metric minute) = 0.432 imperial second

Here's some more perception altering realities of changing time over to metric:
Maps are based on segments of 1000 MILES (at the equator). Thus, time zones are likewise broken down by 1000 MILES. If we change clocks, we might as well change maps too. The United States would be broken down into three metric time zones.

Jobs How does the idea of going to work for only 6.6 metric hours sound? Great huh? except it's still 8 imperial hours long. However, what company allows people to leave after halfway through the metric hour? Because we all know companies are thoughtful and considerate entities run by understanding and generous people, they would allow people to leave after just 6 metric hours? No, more likely they would say work for 7 metric hours (8.4 imperial hours). So what? Big deal, right? it's only a little less than half an hour. and we would get instead of $20/hour pay (let's say), we'd be making $24/m.hour, right? Because employers are generous entities and they would adjust accordingly, right?
No, more than likely they would maintain the $20/m.hour as standard, so you'd be working for 8.4 i.hours and only getting paid $16.66/i.hour.

School would be similar. Remember going to school for 6.5 i.hours per day? How does the sound of only going to school for 5.41 m.hours a day sound? In this instance, they would likely round down to 5.25 m.hours because rounding up would mean paying teachers more money. Upside - kids get out of school earlier. Downside - each m.hour is now 72 i.minutes long (hours would seem to take even longer "forever" than before) and the anxiety during a test of watching a m.second being only .432 i.seconds long would likely cause greater stress. You now have 100 m.seconds per m.minute, but they go by soooo quickly!!!

GPS would have to be reconfigured. Though that's not a terribly big or long fix.

Likewise, MS Windows would likely have to be reconfigured... just because.

Yup, such a great idea to convert everything over to metric, isn't it??

and there is the question:
Are you ready for the whole world to be converted over to metric?

It's all about perceptions. The earth doesn't spin faster or slower, the same distances are between two fixed points. And a watched pot still takes forever to boil. It's only our perceptions of time and distance that changes, and isn't it a great thing to change that perception when some new fangled better system comes along?

Do I want my water boiling at 100 degrees? Hell no. 212 will do just fine, thank you very much.

Do I want my water freezing at 0? That makes no sense, so I'm gonna say a big, hairy no. 32 degrees is the more logical choice.

Do I want my shit tonnes measured in metric? Nope. I'll be using an English shit tonne unit to measure my fan mail.

I believe the boiling point and freezing point of water never actually change, only the scale to which we decide to measure them.

Seems okay to me have a system where I don't have to do math to sort if 3/8, is bigger or smaller than 11/32.
 
Perception is not reality, it is our interpretation of reality. But, it's the only one we've got, so it is a functional reality if not a true reality.

Psst - the boiling point and freezing point of water both change with altitude (atmospheric pressure). 212 F and 32 F is the boiling and freezing point of water at sea level.

Damn, now I feel like a recalcitrant philosophical smart-ass.

Actually I was talking about converting over to metric fully instead of this mamby pamby half metric/half imperial usages. Specifically I was talk about time. For instance, how do those in the metric world use a speed of kilometers per HOUR, when an hour is based on imperial units?

The concept of metric time was first posited back in 1870-something by some scientist guy who also wrote how Pluto wasn't really a planet.

...I jest about his writing about Pluto. I don't think Disney was around in the 1870's.

Technically, they first did a big push back in the 60's in the US. Then there have been subsequent subtle nudges since. However, the US government around 1990 made a declaration that all documents developed for the military (drawings, etc) were to have imperial AND metric units on them. Currently, I don't know when they did the full push, all drawings and documents are in full metric and built to that standard alone. All fasteners (screws, etc) are to metric standards, all sheet metal is to metric standards.

The big clue that the government is trying to strong arm the population, is that the government requires all civilian based materials supplied for ships, vehicles etc, have to have drawings made available (so they know what they are buying). The point is, everyone selling toilet seats and hammers to the US gov, have to have METRIC drawings. No half imperial/half metric.
In other words, if you want to do business with the government, you got to play by their rules, or they'll go somewhere else.
...like France for instance.

The US Zumwalt class destroyer, for instance, is touted as 100% metric.

Psst.. you still have to do math to see if 230 kilotons is bigger or smaller than 230,000,000,000 grams. It's just easier math.

By the way, according to one source, the metric world is so used to metric (decimals) now, that they have lost footing and kids in the US are superior for doing fractional math, as some math must be done by fractions alone.

Of course. It is why people put salt in the water to make it boil at a hotter temperature.

In France the water boils higher because of all the cheese particles in the water. Their water is infused with Camembert and bleu cheeses.
