is it really the technology or is it human nature? Just because we have smart phones doesn't mean we have to be constantly on them, does it? Is it a lack of self control that makes us use them as much as we do? If you saw 4 people on a bus all on their phones would you think differently about them if they we all reading a book, old school style?

When I'm only public transportation, I tend to read on my phone - especially if it's a trip I routinely make. I embraced the whole e-book move years ago and am quite comfortable with it.

When I bump into the problem of technology, specifically smart phones, is when you are in personal or small group settings and people are on their phone or constantly checking it. Unless they're looking something up to settle a disagreement. Many a perfectly good argument has been side-tracked by pesky facts.

I do think it is human nature though, not technology itself, that causes the problem. The greatest sin of the smart phone is its ability to take us completely out of the present moment and away from present company.

Issues like this always remind me of Plato's Phaedrus. In it, Socrates warns of the evil of the written word vs the spoken word by recounting the story of how the God Theuth gave the gift of letters to the Egyptian King Thamus. Thamus responds to Theuth, "...For this invention will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn to use it, because they will not practice their memory. Their trust in writing, produced by external characters which are no part of themselves, will discourage the use of their own memory within them. You have invented an elixir not of memory, but of reminding; and you offer your pupils the appearance of wisdom, not true wisdom, for they will read many things without instruction and will therefore seem to know many things, when they are for the most part ignorant and hard to get along with, since they are not wise, but only appear wise." The advancement of technology is always seen as detracting from the experience, or taking away from some deeper level of fulfillment that was provided by doing things "the old way." But I would say that is us being resistant to change.

TLDR: Whether it's a book, a magazine, a telephone call, or a smart phone, as long as they leave me alone, I don't care what they entertain themselves with, and I try not to judge others for using technology to their advantage.

I generally agree, with the caveat that you need to be honest with yourself when judging. Not all change is bad, but not all criticism of it is wrong either.

True, but I tend to dole out my criticism where it can be beneficial. And a stranger on the bus curmudgeonly criticizing "whippersnappers" for burying their nose in smartphones or tablets seems to be an exercise in futility. I do what makes me comfortable and happy, and leave others to do the same. So long as it doesn't hurt anyone, who am I to care?

Pokemon Go. I probably won't get in the game but I think it's pretty cool watching it spread like wild fire. And the haters, guessing it's like most hate, uninvolved, uninformed, someone doing something different. But as we well know, nobody likes a hater.

But what do people like? When we know, it's a good feeling to provide it. Finding a good fetish partner tells us all we need to know about that. So my question is:

How selfish are you? Would you give pleasure to someone out of sheer altruistic reasons or would you do it begrudgingly, hoping that quid pro quo reigns supreme and you'll get something in return?

I think you guys established the other day that if someone is not really into something then it's not pleasurable for their partner. We like engagement. And you can absolutely tell when someone is just going through the motions. Having said that, it's different to do something that totally gets someone off, even if it wouldn't be my thing ordinarily.

I like a hater, or at least I respect them, because at least they are being honest. Few people today have the guts to speak their mind, and then, eventually, you find out what they are really like.

On to the topic question... I'm rarely selfish, though how thorough can one mean that sincerely? Do you walk around feeding everyone else first hoping that they will take the time out to feed you? Bullshit.

Yes, yes, I know, moms do it everyday, and farmers do it three times a day to their livestock, but I meant that to mean feeding strangers.

You have to look after yourself to a fashion. Eating, drinking, bathing, clothing yourself... If you don't do it, nobody else will.

In the intimate department, the only lesson I learned when my dad told me about the birds and the bees is "take care of the woman first, and she will take care of you." I have always lived by that rule.

Sometimes I give pleasure altruistically, sometimes there is an expectation of quid pro quo, it just depends entirely on the circumstances and the person. Sexually speaking, I find that giving pleasure is pleasurable, so my motives there are not entirely altruistic.

I think Pokemon Go is pretty awesome, though I've never even looked at it and have only been exposed to it through the news. The technology is simply awesome.
