As many are aware, I'm afraid of zombies. And with all the books, comics, shows like TWD and FTWD, and every 10th movie being about zombies, it's hard for me to ignore. So I keep my head down, and try to move forward, But when it happens (not if), I have a plan, and I am so out of here,,,,,

There's this island in northern wisconsin... but when the water freezes over, well... I guess that is not a very good plan is it. Back to the apocalyptic drawing board.

Irrational fears. We all have them, we all know better, but we still have them.

What measures do you take to try and contain that irrational fear? Or do you just live with knowing it's never going to happen but allowing it some space in your brain to exist.

I have an irrational fear of some kind of bug or creature crawling in my ear and eating my brains out ala Wrath of Khan.

I know. Irrational. Except every so often a bug DOES get in one's ear and makes the most disgusting chewing noises right next to the ear drum which is enough to utterly confirm this fear.

I logically reassure myself that bugs really don't want to be in my ear...nothing in there for them to eat...and they really can't chew through my ear drum, which doesn't connect to my brain anyway. Ugh.

I don't have any irrational fears. I have a healthy respect for and fear of fire. (When I was younger I was a cop and responded to/investigated several house fires where people were killed and a few where they escaped.)

I respond to that fear by having working smoke detectors tested regularly, an escape ladder (I live on a third floor), a smoke hood (it's the smoke that makes it so you can't get out of the fire), and several fire extinguishers. So, in the tiny chance my building burns, I've got a reasonable chance of getting out.

(Hint: NEVER buy, own or use a torch style lamp (where the shade is metallic and faces up). Those things are freaking flame throwers when they short out.)

The only real thing I fear is failure. But lately I've been working on that through exposure therapy.

:p

Roaches. Holy shit those little fuckers are disgusting. God they're the devil. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

Nope. I still maintain anal. I'll ask around. I'll get the low down.

I checked around jezilee... Everyone is saying it is anal.

That is utterly preposterous, flying bugs don't have a mouth that chews. They suck up their meals through their legs or through a proboscis. Didn't you see "the fly"?

Earwigs on the other hand...

And by everyone, you mean the voices in your head?

You know what they say, "4 out of 5 voices in my head..."

I didn't say flying bugs.
And on more than one occasion while wilderness camping I have had some small 6 legged creature crawl into my ear...and OMG their working mouth parts RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR EAR DRUM in the middle of the night...is enough to make the sanest person go bat shit crazy. Honestly.

And I did say it was an irrational fear...the part about them eating my brains....

I don't have a particular fear that comes to mind, I get nervous plenty about the "what ifs" like with flying, rock climbing, etc., but I embrace it, because it's either that or get beaten by it.
All that tough talk aside, I am more than a little terrified of kids. The younger, the scarier. I have no experience with them and no knowledge outside of the fact that they are messy, loud, and very breakable. So I avoid them at all costs.

Jeez you people have some weird arse fears.

Me.... I fear that at some point in my life I'll be in a situation where I'm stuck listening to Mariah Carey sing.

It could be worse, it could be... gasp ...Justin Beiber, or... dare I say Celine Dion!

^^^^This.

Being the youngest in my family, and being my sibs and cousins never "got busy," I have zero experience with anybody younger than myself. I don't exactly "fear" kids, but I haven't a clue what to do with them. If anything, an irrational fear would be that I'm the last of my line. That might be a rational fear, I don't know.

Feelin' guilty, feelin' scared, hidden cameras everywhere!
Stop! Hold on. Stay in control...

what are you willing to give up to make the lives of others better? Are you willing when what you give up is more of a necessity than a luxury? What about the closer it gets to what you consider a necessity? And what about when a necessity is challenged, do we all really "need" as much as we claim?

Justin is ok, I can cope with him! Celine is awful but their is no fate worse than Mariah.

As a homegirl, I feel I have to fend for Mariah... as much as I would anybody. She is an awesome songbird, who needs a song. Just because you can sing, means you know what to sing or that you can write music. She also needs to lay off the scales.

To me, Celine is thew worst, and close in second is John Cougar Melancamp, Justin is just an an oddity of nature to me; famous with no reason to be.

I probably don't have the typical outlook on this topic. I don't look at my purpose in life is to make others' lives better. Each person should look after their own life to make it better.

That said, our JOBS are usually in some way helping others. Whether it is building a bed for someone else to sleep on, growing flowers to make an impression on a first love, keeping an electrical generator working at peak efficiency during air conditioning season, or collecting garbage so people aren't up to their necks in it. So, each of us "gives up" a part of our day to help others; usually half our waking hours (or 8 hours).
The other half of our waking day is supposed to be for looking after ourselves or our family.

I don't see a need to give up more time to "helping others." I've done my part at the office.

That said, some people's jobs are or revolve around a luxury. I don't appreciate my job (remodeling kitchen's or the home in general) when it's not needed. "I got tired of this color" really drives me up a wall. If it's broken, busted or falling apart, then look me up, otherwise...

But that's me. If your job is to build luxury boats, then it can't be helped but that your job caters to luxury. You deal with that fact or look for another job.

Restating - what are you willing to give up to improve upon the collective good?

Phew...that's better. Or maybe the coffee kicked in. Whatever. I am a do-gooder, admittedly. I almost always do stuff that's better for others even if it doesn't benefit me directly. Its not always healthy. I have to start sayjng no sometimes. I have given up time, effort, money and material possessions to the greater good.

The question was more about making a knowing sacrifice, a permanent one, because in the end things would be better off.

The collective good doesn't motivate me to give up anything. It's too vague and too often translates into "you sacrifice something because we don't like that you like it".

That said, the specific good - to help individuals, to help them change, to help them grow, to be safe, to have food, etc. All of those things I have and will give up time, money, material possessions and emotional/psychological peace to try and pitch in and do my part.

But I am far more tribal - I'm more powerfully motivated by the immediate and that is tempered by what I can and cannot influence. If the choice is between the vague collective good and the immediate personal good then I'm heading for the immediate personal good - and for that I am willing to make great sacrifices.

I'll amend to say I'm less inclined to offer up money for "the collective good" because oft times, "the collective," ain't up to doing good. If someone needs a hand, that's the first I'll offer. Materials things lent are often never returned.

A story I can never drone on enough about is how this one guy in New York City, used to plead poverty every day. He wouldn't push too hard when he begged, but he never was too shy to let you seeing him use the street for a toilet. Humbly, but disgracefully. Making one think "oh the poor homeless dear...!"

Only to learn he lived out on Long Island in an highly exclusive area (aka The Hamptons).

Also, I found out a "non-profit" organization that "helps the collective good" otherwise known as The American Red Cross, has a president that takes in a six figure salary each year, condition-less on how little or much they collect each year.

Money, no. Things, maybe. Time and effort, okay.

Time. Its my most valuable resource. I have an extremely limited amount of it. If you think about it. 100,000 years of human history, all I am alloted is maybe 75 years? Average? By comparison, there is nothing more valuable. Question is? What kind of impact will you make with such a valuable gift?

Yesterday's topic was a bit of a thud. That'll happen, that's what my momma told me. No guarantees on today's.....

What has happened to the phrase "you're welcome"? It used to be the common repose to "thank-you" no whenever I hear it used I look around to see if there's a unicorn near by. So tell me oh linguists of the world, what happened? Why has it fallen out of favor. And what do you say when some tells you "thank-you"?

Did i miss something? I say "you're welcome." Do others not say it?

Is this a northern scourge of bad manners?

And I'm a linguist. I have a piece of paper from an accredited university that states as much.

I say thank you as well. I hate those rude fuckers who don't. Awful.

I do believe it's probably a northern thing. I'll blame it on NYC. Rudest people ever. Like a million little Hitlers running around.

Teenagers have hijacked 'you're welcome' and turned it into sarcasm...

These days, depending on circumstances, my response to 'thank you' is 'no problem' or 'my pleasure'.
