Marijuana Majority: Americans Now Back Legalization

Thank you, Harold, for a very informative article on the positive effects of much-needed regulation.

Jury deliberating in case of man growing marijuana he says was meant to help his wife’s cancer

A Miami jury began deliberating the fate of a man who faces up to 35 years in prison for setting up a marijuana growing operation in a bedroom of his house, in what he says was an act of love to help his wife who is recovering from breast cancer.

Ricardo Varona, 43, was arrested in July 2014 and charged with marijuana trafficking after police said they seized 15 live marijuana plants that could have produced more than 30 pounds of usable weed.

Wow, two pounds a plant! He must have high ceilings in his house.

Australia, Weed is not leagal, but the Nimbin Madi Gras is 1969, Manhattan Beach all over again!

I ran into an old Army buddy who had become a commune member in the 196x's and then made shoes, lots of them.

We met a lot of folks like this in SoCal in the late sixties. Now we have guys like the Beiber.

Welcome LucidLucifer, you are certainly a liberal. Nice to meet you.

JackLuis, I have no idea why I did not get the notices of your posting to my thread, but all of them are great, as usual. Thank you for keeping this alive.

Liberals ran on the promise marijuana would be legal recreationally if they were elected. Those with grow licences will keep them and new ones issued.
Once the party is in place, they say no one will be arrested for simple possession. The world is looking at us right now, as we stand to be the first country to go the legal route and businesses have been lining up for grow licences. There's only 50k patients who use it, so there's no market right now for all the pot they are allowing to be grown, so the push is on to make it a profitable enterprise.

If anything, they could have Grow Your Own shops, like they have for beer and wine. In this case, the numerous empty warehouses would have new life in them, and grow X number of plants per person per month. Lots of options on which way to go, so we'll see what we end up with, but control is the key issue, along with revenue. $5billion is a big incentive to go for it. ;)

Thank you, Royce, for the concise answer. Please keep us posted as to how things work out for the little guy or gal.

Oversaturation of legal pot dispensaries in Oregon sending profits up in smoke

Along North-east Sandy Boulevard in Portland, Oregon, there’s a stretch known as the “Green Mile”. Here, medical marijuana dispensaries are budding. Almost two years ago, when Matt Walstaller opened Pure Green in the area, there was only one competitor. Today there’s close to 10.

In the beginning business was booming, recalled Walstaller. But last autumn, Pure Green’s traffic started to slow.

“Then we looked at the numbers. There was a couple thousand new medical cardholders, but two or three times as many stores as there had been the year before,” said Walstaller.

Oversaturation and shaky business plans have led some dispensaries down a path of no return. “I know of some shops that have closed, and I’ve heard of others that have been sold,” said Walstaller.

Since 1 October, when the sale of recreational marijuana was legalized , struggling businesses have found firm footing again . At Pure Green, the amount of customers per day has tripled. Donald Morse, who owns the Human Collective medical dispensary in south-west Portland, also experienced a substantial uptick in business since 1 October.

But as the director of the Oregon Cannabis Business Council, Morse says the number of license holders is consistently going down month to month. “We didn’t need all those dispensaries. A lot of people got into it, but they were not well financed and were hanging on by their fingertips,” said Morse. “The shake-out has begun. Those with sound business practices will survive, those without are going to fail.”

Supply and demand will do that to a commodity in increasing supply. :)

High-strength marijuana may damage brain fibers — but not the less potent stuff

High-strength cannabis may damage nerve fibres that handle the flow of messages across the two halves of the brain, scientists claim. Brain scans of people who regularly smoked strong skunk-like cannabis revealed subtle differences in the white matter that connects the left and right hemispheres and carries signals from one side of the brain to the other.

The changes were not seen in those who never used cannabis or smoked only the less potent forms of the drug, the researchers found.

Paola Dazzan , a neurobiologist at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, said the effects appeared to be linked to the level of active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in cannabis. While traditional forms of cannabis contain 2 to 4 % THC, the more potent varieties (of which there are about 100), can contain 10 to 14% THC, according to the DrugScope charity.

“If you look at the corpus callosum, what we’re seeing is a significant difference in the white matter between those who use high potency cannabis and those who never use the drug, or use the low-potency drug,” said Dazzan. The corpus callosum is rich in cannabinoid receptors, on which the THC chemical acts.

“The difference is there whether you have psychosis or not, and we think this is strictly related to the potency of the cannabis,” she added. Details of the study are reported in the journal Psychological Medicine .

Great news, Royce. I managed to harvest my crop successfully again this year even with the ordinance officers checking everywhere. Since I was within guidelines for a co-operative, I suppose I wasn't worth investigating, as it probably wouldn't lead to a winning court case for the prosecution. I am so glad I didn't give in to fear, and continued in my peaceful, law-abiding manner.

JackLuis, yes, I did read both of those articles. I have been smoking 25% THC pot for over 10 years and pot in general since I was 14. I will be 64 on my next birthday and am in the best of health, so maybe I should let the doctors study me. LOL

I have High Hopes :))) that the new year may see Congress reschedule MJ as a less than class 1 drug allowing research into it's medical benefits. Given the foreign research that shows a lot of promise for MMJ, perhaps the Anslinger curse will be broken soon?

Yes, JackLuis, the shift towards research is getting great support. I am most impressed by the Israeli research and all of its benefits for mankind. The one thing about marijuana is that it improves one's health in so many ways, which is a positive thing. But, I often think there is a conspiracy to shorten everyone's lives with the food additives, pesticides, and the like, especially those of us who are retired and no longer paying any taxes into the system. Sugar is the worst of all the additives, of course, even though it is "natural". I avoid sugar most of the time, but the holidays brings so many sweets I find I do indulge at times, and experience the negative effects more each year.

I have an addiction to pumpkin pie, so now is the time to indulge myself. My Missus made one and was out of cream, so she used eggnog. Really interesting flavor. If you try this I'd suggest that you use 1/3-1/2 eggnog and the rest cream with some extra nutmeg.

And we do pay our share of taxes, sales tax, excise tax, property taxes! In addition we pay for the taxes of the companies we buy things from in the form of overhead charges in the price of every item we have to buy.

Maybe Bernie can get elected and we can rid ourselves of the Anslinger Curse! :D

JackLuis, I am more of a realist than you, I suppose, but Bernie as the V.P. with Bill Clinton as First Man sounds perfectly wonderful to me. Anslinger was a tee-totaler, as in complete Temperance on all things, worse than the Mormons, and therefore had a very narrow view of the majority's desire for alcohol and drugs. The marijuana that he was worried about was so low in THC, it barely got a person high. Nowadays, it is so strong, some people don't know how to handle it and unfortunately end up in emergency rooms.

Royce, Go Canada, lead the way. If Trump is elected, I suspect a lot of Americans will want to move to Canada, whether they are allowed or not!

I try to be optimistic, sometimes it's hard to be. HRC is too much of a Hawk for me to like her.

Canada seems to be gaining sanity and hopefully more states will follow Colo, Ore and Wash's lead. I want to see the rescheduling so that med tests can get started. I don't thik that all the stories are true on the Medical benefits of MJ but I have seen in my own life that it is not a killer weed.

Anybody cruise the "Grow" forums? I did for while to see what it was about and found it quite like Lit, except there were few trolls and they were quickly chastised by the members. :D

JackLuis, Hillary is less of a hawk than Trump and that seems to be who Republican Americans favor, which is a complete surprise to me. He reminds me too much of a game show host and that is not the image of America I want to see put forth. But then, the Republicans put a Hollywood B-movie star in the White House, so strange things can happen. I sincerely doubt Bernie could beat Trump. Isn't it funny how his own name implies his tactical wins. Maybe, scary is the better word.

I haven't tried the Grow forums because I have little time for any forums, except here.

someoneyouknow, yes, JackLuis posted on that article earlier in the thread. I have been smoking 25% THC pot for over 15 years now and so far my white matter is intact and I am still going strong at almost 64 years of age, so don't take that article too seriously.
