Monday morning.

Monday mornings sucked in general.

But for Vanessa, today wasn't just your typical sucky Monday morning. This was Monday AFTER the company picnic...

The company picnic where everyone let loose...the company picnic where it was an equivalent to the annual Christmas party.... You know the party...the kind where 'if you drink too much you end up doing something stupid with someone you never would've done with while sober' kinda party?

Yeah...that kind of party.

All morning she had done her best to avoid Mark.

The thought of just his name was enough to make her stomach queasy...

It wasn't that Mark wasn't an ugly guy or disgusting looking. Though he was an asshole who thought the world revolved around him. Mark who thought that he was God's gift to women...hell, he thought he was God's gift to God...

If she could just avoid him, she have to avoid what happened that night after the picnic...the afterward when the party continued at a local pub... the afterward she ended up going home with Mark...

"Ms. White, are you listening?" Her boss stood in front of the meeting room, hands on his hips...a less than pleased look on his face.

Vanessa cleared her throat and her thoughts, putting her entire attention on the meeting, "Yes Mr. Soloman..."

Damnit...how she hated Mondays!

age: 26
Stats: 6'2".. 170 lbs.... light brown hair... hazel eyes
Occupation: Marketing Executive with CC Enterprises

Mark had a reputation for being a hardass.... an asshole even. It was a reputation that he had earned because of the fact that he had been born poor and worked to earn everything he had. He never knew his father and his mother was a crack whore. He was placed in a foster home at the age of 5. and spent the rest of his youth moving from one foster home to another. The one thing that saved him was his determination to overcome. It pissed people off the way he worked so hard to succeed.... he didn't care about anyone else.

Working at CC was no different. He wanted to rise to the top and he didn't care what happened or what anyone thought.... that was until the night of the company party.

The meeting certainly could've gone better...at least that's what Vanessa had thought.

She was walking back to her office, her head staring down at her notes...or the lack of notes really. She entered the office and her door closed behind her suddenly, startling her and making her muffle a yelp.

It was Mark.

"Damnit..you scared me.." she told him as she threw her notes on the desk. She knew why he was here..they had slept together and usually the guy walks out in the morning but this time, it was the girl. Vanessa had walked out the next morning. Nothing said, no thank you, no goodbye...no see you later...

"If you think I am such an asshole.... or so repulsive... why did you even leave the bar with me. Was that just the alcohol? Is that all it was? Well, I'll tell you what, that doesn't say much about you." He stood there looking at her. He could see the shock in her face. He could almost see disgust.

"You don't know anything about me, but you assume that since I am not one of the group of people that hang out together and socialize with one another that I am not worthy of your time or your company.... yet you use me to get off and then split." He opened the door and walked out of her office.... slamming it behind him.

V stood there, in complete shock...

She didn't know what to do or say... run after him? Make a scene in the office? No, she wouldn't do that, instead, V cursed under her breath and just stayed in her office the rest of the day...what the hell?!

******************
Later that evening. Vanessa found herself standing in the front door of the apartment she had left 3 nights ago... The words Mark had said to her earlier that day kept playing over and over in her head...

She owed him an explanation, at least that much...but would he open the door? Did he have company?

Only one way to find out... V knocked on the door and waited.

Mark quickly got over his encounter in the office. He left the building and spent the afternoon visiting clients. This is what made him so effective..... he was able to put things behind him and move on with his work...... keeping his eye on the proverbial prize.

When he got home he changed into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Then he fixed dinner and flipped on the television. After he finished eating, he did the dishes and went back and sat down to watch the sports channel. He was vegging watching television when he heard a knock at the door.... "Who the fuck.....?

He walked to the door and opened it. "Oh, what the fuck are you doing here?"

"Oh, what the fuck are you doing here?"

V was quiet. She nodded slightly and sighed, "OK, I deserved that..." with out asking, she brushed past him and went into his apartment. She heard close the door behind her, her hands were crossed in front of her as she stared at the floor, "Listen...I'm sorry about just leaving the other night, OK? I can explain...I was just...shocked...not in a bad way, mind you, but just shocked that we did what we did..not that it wasn't great..."

Good grief, she was sticking her foot in her mouth and making the situation seem worst than it really was.

"It's just, that night was great...and well, yes, knowing your reputation, I didn't want to end up with you tossing me out like some sort of...slut. I wanted to remember what we shared in a good way..." she hoped that made sense because it was the truth...

"Listen, don't try to bullshit me. You realized you were someplace you didn't want to be. You came back here because of the alcohol and after the fact you couldn't wait to get out."

"So, why are you here. Do you need to make yourself feel good? Guilty conscience? What is it? I am am over what happened after the party. I am over what happened today. What is it that you are not over?"

He waited for her response. His eyes moving over her. She was attractive and sexy, and she was good in the sack. He had enjoyed his night with her, but he was pissed about the way she acted after.

"If you were over it then why are you being such an ass about it? OH! That's right, you're an ass naturally...silly me... I'm not going to repeat myself, I just told you why I left when and how I did, either accept or don't, it doesn't matter to me."

"And!" Vanessa continued, "That wasn't the only reason I came over...I came over to ask you out...this time, to get to know each other..I would've done it this morning but I didn't really get the chance."

She waited for his response. How long had she pined after him? Despite his attitude, his demeanor...V still had a small crush on him. Yes, when she thought about him, it made her sick to her stomach because she knew he wouldn't wan't her...

When he didn't answer right away, Vanessa sighed and walked back to the door, "Look, never mind...forget I said anything OK?"

He looked at her when she was yelling at him. Then she asked him out. It shocked him. He didn't say anything... he was too shocked. Then she headed for the door. "Fine, I will forget everything you said."

"I am supposed to answer immediately to the person who comes to my house and calls me an asshole. Then she says she wants to ask me out. Who asks out someone she thinks is an asshole? What does that say about you? Go ahead... leave. Get the fuck out."

Vanessa bit her bottom lip, not daring to move, "No." She told him, trying hold her voice steady.

"I will not leave until you apologize to me."

She crossed her arms in front of her and looked up at Mark, daring him to make her move.

Mark laughed at her. "Apologize to you. That isn't going to happen. You are the one who should be apologizing. You are the one who has made all of the assumptions. Now, go back to your "perfect" little world and enjoy yourself and all of your friends. I don't need any of you. Never have."

Mark walked over and turned off the tv. "You can stand there all night if you would like." With that he walked into his bedroom and closed the door.

Vanessa did just stand there. She couldn't believe it...

It wasn't that she couldn't believe what Mark said but the fact that she was still standing there...probably like a fool but that didn't matter. There was no way in hell she was going to let him think he was getting away from this.

She had offered and he was going to turn her away?

Walking to the bedroom door, Vanessa stood there, "Oh, who's living in their own world now? You know everything you just said is something you should be saying to yourself Mark!!"

Mark undressed and brushed his teeth. He was getting ready to climb into bed when he heard her at the door to his bedroom... yelling to him. What the hell did she want? What was it she was trying to accomplish?

He walked to the door. He didn't care that he was naked and ready to get in bed. He just wanted to get rid of her. He swung the door open and she was standing right there. "You are not getting an apology from me. Are you too fucking stupid to understand that? Now what the fuck do you want? Just get the fuck out of here."

With a parting shot, Vanessa slapped the bedroom door, "Fine with me asshole! Have a nice life!"

She turned on her heel and walked out of his apartment, slamming the front door right behind her. All the while muttering curses under her breath and leaving the complex.

~7 weeks later~

"Son of a bitch!"

That's all Vanessa could say as she stared at the stick in her hand.

She stood in the bathroom of her small apartment and looked at the results. No!! Her mind screamed as she frantically grabbed the paper instructions and looked at it...

What the hell was she going to do now?

Tell Mark? Yeah right, she hadn't spoken to that asshole since the last time. She didn't purposely avoid him at work either...she just didn't hang out in the same circles as he did. And she liked it that way.

Now this not only meant she had to talk to him it meant...yeah...that...

Mark avoided everyone in the office except those that he needed to be successful at his job..... and successful he was. He was the company's top producer and he was going places. They offered him the opportunity to take a management position in the company's Los Angeles office. He wasn't sure about LA... he was actually hoping for the management position overseeing the Paris office.

He went out of his way to avoid Vanessa. There were several times that he thought Vanessa would be able to help him with a client, but he chose to use someone else so that Vanessa did not get any credit for the job wel done.

~Monday morning~

Vanessa got to the office late and just everything seemed off beat that day. She got to her office and the first thing she was greeted with was Mr. Sullivan's personal assistant, Todd. He was smirking as V arrived late, she saw him tapping his foot impatiently. "Well, it must be nice to be on banker hours," he told her in a stuck up tone.

"It would be if I were a banker...can I help you?"

"Yeah, Mr. Sullivan wants to you in his office ASAP. And by ASAP, I don't mean whenever you feel like it. He's waiting now for you."

Little weasel...V thought as she tossed her purse on her desk and walked back out, toward the boss' office....what now?

For the past week, Vanessa was sick to her stomach which was what prompted her to get the test and wow... what a shock...

As she entered Mr. Sullivan's office, she stopped in her tracks...there was Mark...the two were joking and talking like they were old friends. The laughter stopped immediately when V walked in.

Vanessa was still hooked that Mark was there and barely listened to what Sullivan had to say. It seemed that the two were chosen to work on a product in Brazil...

Of all places... Vanessa thought... the details were a little sketchy but they were to be given more details one the clients in Brazil were contacted. She quickly glanced at Mark and could tell by his demeanor that he wasn't happy...and she knew that he wasn't happy with having to be in the same room as her..

Mark waited until Vanessa had asked some of her questions and was then dismissed by Sullivan. "Why her?" he asked. "Of all of the people you could have sent with me. I am grateful for the opportunity, and you know I will knock it dead, but...... HER?"

He listened as Sullivan told him that it came from the client. She had worked on a part of the client's account in the past and they were happy with the results, so, when the client asked who was being sent, they chose Vanessa to go with Mark.

"That's just fucking great. I am sure she will find something that will fuck it all up."

This is just great, I'm sure he'll find something to fuck it all up!... Vanessa thought as she nearly slammed the door to her office. She needed to get her temper under control and well, she had almost gone off on Sullivan back there right in front of Mark..yeah, that would've been product and would've also proved to Mark of what he thought of her as high and mighty...

There was a knock on her office door, damnit, she should've stayed in bed today... opening up the door, there was Todd, he smiled and handed Vanessa an envelope, "Well, here's you flight and hotel information, your plane leaves at 8pm tonight, there will be a driver to take you and Mark straight to the hotel. There will be security provided also by the client due to threats against Americans...is there anything else you needed?"

With a fake smile, Vanessa took the envelope and shook her head, "No." With that, before Todd could say anything else, she closed the door in his face...damnit, they wanted her to leave tonight? It meant that she would need to get home and pack and well....spend the entire flight with Mark, listening to him bitch about he could probably do all this without her help...

Mark took his travel info and ticket from Sullivan, shook his hand and said to him, "I will make it work despite her. This account will go through the roof." Then he turned and left Sullivan's office.

Mark had Todd call him a car. He was going to have to make a few stops to get everything he needed.... the bank to get his passport from his safe deposit box, the currency exchange so that they would have some cash when they landed... he knew SHE would never think of that, and he had to go to the dry cleaners to pick up his suits.

After getting everything done, he packed, and headed to the airport. He didn't take everything he needed, but he had negotiated two round trips home, so, whatever else he needed he would get in the future. He got to the airport and through security. When he got out to the gate he saw Vanessa sitting in the waiting area. What the hell he thought. He walked over to her and sat down next to her, leaving an empty seat between them. "Listen, I know you aren't happy about this, but neither am I. Let's just make the best of it.. call a truce. OK?"

"Listen, I know you aren't happy about this, but neither am I. Let's just make the best of it.. call a truce. OK?"

Vanessa was so lost deep in her own thoughts that she didn't notice Mark had sat next to her. But when he spoke, she jumped a bit and composed herself.

Oh, now he wants a truce... Vanessa thought as she leaned back in her seat and looked at him quickly. Of course they would need some sort of truce...or in this case, a friendship for the client's sake. The company was counting on it.

"Of course Mark, anything for you." She said in a sickly sweet voice and then got up, grabbed her carry on and waited by the gate as their flight was getting ready...

It was going to be a long, long ride...and she was sick to her stomach, this time for a different reason...

"Fuck her," Mark thought to himself. Here he was trying to take the higher ground and make peace with her and she just blows him off. If that is the way she wants it, that is the way she can have it. She will be on her own in Brazil.

Mark grabbed his carry-on bag and walked to the gate agent. He spoke to her a second. "No, I am travelling alone," he said to the agent. She punched some keys on her keyboard and looked up at him. "Good, I'll take it" Mark handed the agent his company credit card. As the gate agent handed him his new ticket she told him that first class customers were now boarding and he could proceed to the plane right away. As mark walked passed Vanessa he smiled and proceed to the plane and his first class seat.

Vanessa shook her head as Mark walked by, his head held high like he accomplished something great...

Men...she thought, they can wipe their own ass and they're still so damn proud...

As she got comfortable in coach, Vanessa couldn't help but think about everything. She had to stop this bickering with Mark. He was the father of their child....

That's when it hit her... and hit her hard! Vanessa jumped up and ran to the restroom at the back of the plane... morning sickness! Why did they call it that when it hit all the damn time?

*********
After all had settled down, the flight attendants kept asking Vanessa if she was OK. They had talked with each other and felt for her so they moved her up to first class, thinking that the flight up there would be more gentle on her stomach.

Why was it she could tell them about being pregnant when she couldn't even tell Mark?

Just then the attendant stopped in the row where Mark was sitting...so that's where he had gone!? Vanessa wanted to be mad but she couldn't blame him..he wanted to get away from her. But she was even more surprised when they sat her down next to him.

Shit.. she thought.

As the plane taxied, both Mark and Vanessa didn't say thing....

Mark settled into his seat. He put his head phones in and got comfortable. He was surprised that nobody was sitting in the aisle seat, especially when the gate agent had told him there ws only one seat left in first class. That was okay though.... it would make for a more enjoyable flight.

Just as Mark was lowering the shade to prepare for takeoff he felt a flight attendant standing next to him in the aisle. He looked toward her and noticed her standing there with Vanessa next to her. What was going on? Then, Vanessa sat down next to him. "Oh well. I guess the flight could be worse," he thought, "I could be in coach and sitting next to her."

He closed his eyes and prepared for the flight. The plane began to taxi toward the runway. He hoped to be asleep before the plane left the ground.

Vanessa wanted anything but to be next to him...not because of who he was but because of what she had to tell him...

"Wait..Mark..." she said as he started to close his eyes. "I am extremely sorry about that back there, I really am. I've just been on edge because I know you don't like me."

With a deep breath, she looked directly at him, her expression was somber, "I'm pregnant Mark. With your baby."

There....it was out....

Now, would he believe her?
