Who's been talking to you?

:D

I've watched you and DG and Crim go on with writing in the Challenge Thread since I first arrived here. If it makes any difference, I think it says a lot about you. Good things, of course!

Perhaps we need some writing exercises to get in shape for this ordeal?

Funny you should say that. :D

I dug this one out earlier today, with a view to posting it here soon.

I can't recall where it came from originally, but it is supposed to help with the planning of a novel. I think I posted it here last year, but can't be certain.

Initial exercise in theme/motifs (it can also be considered an exercise in populating your novel):

STEP ONE (5 minutes):
Write down the names of five objects or people related to your story-- leave lots of space around each of the names. They could be things that are important to the story, or things that somehow represent something in the story. They can be people who play a role in the story, or job titles that serve a function-- you might want to avoid listing your main character at this point. If you're in the "I have no idea" stage, they can be things or people or job titles that you personally think are neat, even if you don't want to write about them.

STEP TWO (25 minutes):
Write a series of verbs and adjectives related to each of the five people or things, in a kind of cluster around the things or people. Spend five minutes on each person or object.

STEP THREE (10 minutes):
Draw lines connecting the things and people to get a sense of how your novel interconnects. Does the ninja have an obscure relationship to the possessed teapot?

FINAL STEP:
Don't feel pressed to explicitly write those relationships into your novel, come November-- you're already aware of them, so they'll appear whether you try to put them in or not. Inevitably, there will be something that doesn't seem to fit the pattern of the other things. Don't decide immediately to discard it-- it may be just the thing to add variety and a counter-tension to your novel. It may also be just the thing you'll end up cutting later-- but it gives you something to cut when editing.

I think I might start a new thread, as it could get lost here, whaddya think?

Could be a good idea. I have already nicked it and stored it on my hdd.

Perfect! *hits Print*

Shall I?

I'm not sure whether to participate this year.

October is likely to be busy in RL so I will think hard before agreeing to participate.

It doesn't help that I have no plot ideas and a balky ISP.

I can hardly Wait!!!!

I didn't get past the first day after NanoWrimo last year before I had the idea for my next book. It was all I could do to keep my fingers OFF the keyboard and write down notes in my trusty notebook.

And, here's the fun part, Shadow Demon will be going on the E-Book for sale list in October!! Muahahahah!!!

All it took for me last year was a tiny origami crane. heheh Now it's an energy sucking diamond from a mine in the Carpathian Mountains, or, perhaps Elsewhere.. who knows? Maybe I'll keep it in Japan this time. *evil grin*

Ahhh the posibilities that surround the imagination. Especially when yuou're bored or have had too many cups of coffee.

Keep in touch,

Consider this my official signup too. I need to get a bit of a plan together this time - I think that will work better for me. Lou, your little exercises were great - I will try those. I can't believe it's almost time already!

P.S. - Hi WSO! Haven't seen you around in a while.

A small hint for those just entering the NanoWrimo arena. IF you relax and do 1667 words a day, you'll come in under the wire at the end of the month.

I finished mine a half a week early. Talk about a sense of accomplishment. I still have my certificate around here somewhere.
But trust me, when you turn in your final word count and get that certificate, it's the most wonderful feeling in the world. That and you get to meet a whole bunch of different people at get togethers and it's total fun.

Look forward to seeing you guys on the forums over at the website,

Hi Lou....

I have a really, really stupid question..... I clicked your link for the official site but saw no way to sign up...and I tooled around a lil bit. I didn't see any way to sign up! Am I just being blonde? You could sign in okay, I suppose... but I saw no way for a newbie to take the plunge.

How are all you other guys signing up? It sounds like real fun but just saying 'I'll play' here isn't quite the same, is it? So... how do you officially get in on it?

Somebody please tell me this isn't just the blonde showing!!

Hey, hey, Delicious Blonde!!!

I'll be setting off my siren that day, so that none of us forget. :D

It's great you're gonna join in!

Great to hear from you again, Bardslady! I have no doubt that you will complete it again this year, and write a good novel too!
