Nature Appreciation

I plan to move to Arizona when I finally decide to retire.

I do love it here. There are some beautiful sunsets (mixes of pinks, oranges, purples, blues) and the palm trees in silhouette against a dark sky get my attention every time believe it or not.

I am only a few hours away from Flagstaff, so if I really want to see snow (rarely) I can drive up there take a look to get it out of my system & turn around and go back to the desert.

If I never see snow again, I won't miss it! I want HOT!!!

Be careful what you wish for....while driving around about 2 hours ago, I thought I heard the radio DJ say it was 108 today...I'm melting.

Actually, I love the heat since my body temp ranges on the cool side all of the time, it has to be pretty darn hot for longer than a few days before I'll complain.

I absolutely do not miss scraping ice off of the windshield or sliding on icy roads.

DGO-

Now this is my favorite way to experience winter--in a picture LOL.

The ice is so pristine and the first snowfall is so pretty-until they throw salt on it to help with traction, then it's just ugly.

I agree-no tornadoes for me either.

I'll take the "monsoon" season here any time--I love a good ole thunder & lightning storm (as well as the downpour that comes with it.) I love to watch the electricity & mayhem through my picture window.

Although I love Arizona, I am going to my former home of Montana to nourish my soul in July. I cannot wait to see Big Sky Country. The evergreens blanketing the mountains, the lush foliage on the hiking trail, the coolness of the shadows, the rippling brook in the small park, the river dissecting the town--One more month and I'm there.

Hello Denae, had a good friend from.....gad....lets see if I can spell it.....Bozeman, Montana? She was going to move back....did not make it though............She died on my Birthday strangely enough.........So I remember her every year and and admire the Orchid blossoms of the orchids she gave me...........I would love to visit there some time......Sigh!

Thank you done_got_old, coincidentally that is almost exactly like one of the orchids she gave me.....a Purple Strap leaf Vanda..........of Vanda corulea descent(that is where a lot of the blue and purple vandas come from) Vanda corulea comes from the foot hills of the Himalayas..where there is sometimes frost.....Orchid growers have been trying to use V.corulea to induce more cold tolerance into vanda breeding Another coincidence, My friend gazed at the Himalayas from the very area that these Vandas were discovered in over a hundred years ago.........She spoke to me of looking at the towering Mountains filling the sky.

Time for an orchid lesson......ahem......the word orchid comes from the greek root word orcis....meaning.....testicle......the greeks have a native terrestrial orchid that has a pair of tubers that are reminiscent of ........:) They are quite inventive with them....they have candy, and a nice dessert using those testicles...er....orchids

Thanks for the refresher course. Now I remember why I like biology but don't like to teach it.

I took a taxonomy class years ago and we had to learn the genus and species names of tons of local plants. For once some of my 3 years of high school Latin came in handy.

I like the idea of having testicles for desert. ;)

Now the blossoms remind me of something else.....hmmm.....I wonder what that is.:D

<Laughing> My ex used to say to me ..." The only reason you like to grow orchids is that they look like female genitalia". Actually that may be part of the reason....<grinning>

Hmmmmm, I could read something into that, but I won't. Maybe that's why I don't grow orchids.

I suppose you are more partial to anthiriums perhaps?

some are pretty, but they're missing something that I love

Back to orcis?

What do you really like to grow? I tend grow all kinds of things these days. Between all my interests.

Sad to say, but I don't grow anything but grey hair. :)

At one time I had hundreds of houseplants. Strange, but everyone's plants died at the same time. We, my mother, grandmother, friends, cousins, all of us. We couldn't figure it out. Much to late we realized my then, 2 year-old son was watering the plants - with milk and juice.........or whatever was left in a cup or glass.

I tried fish after that, but he made fishing rods in an attempt to catch them.

I'm stuck with my coyote.

AAAAAhhhggggg! I hope my little boy does not try anything like that ......casting a wary eye in his direction.
