Aw, what a sweet dog. Your girl is beautiful.

Had a day on the coast this weekend. Some of the fruits below, the rest in the usual place.

Love this one! Where is that? Is this a defunct structure or does it see regular use?

It's in full, regular daily use - I did one lap before heading down to take a few stills. There are many costal resorts in England that have a pier, though sadly they are all in decline. This particular one is in Eastbourne, East Sussex on the south coast of England.

Oh, I like the rose! Very nice.

Thanks for the information. I looked it up in Google Earth and it looks much more impressive in your photo. :)

I love these two. I'm partial to black and white but not all pics look good that way. Something I like doing is zooming in on something like the boat and making abstract photos. Have you ever experimented like that?

Sorry, missed that the first time round.

If you mean going in really close to part of something large, then yes, I have.

Which is a part of this, much larger object (on the right)

Was that the sort of thing you meant? :)

They're great Ray... but then I've a real soft spot for old buses. Am I anywhere near right in thinking they're routemasters?

The one on the left is :)

To the general populus, any open platform bus tends to be referred to as a Routemaster, but the one on te right is an "RT".

There are loads more on my flickr pages if you click through either of the pics.

We once had buses like yours Ray many years ago. They were green and gold/yellow. Many had done well over a million miles.

The lighthouse is at Sugarloaf Point on the mid north coast of NSW. The rocks furthest from the coastline are called Seal Rocks and have "tripped up" many a ship over the past two hundred years.

The pics of the cats are lovely but the expression on the dog's face is priceless. :)

Another glance into the mind of the photographer

I looked around my library of photos for a shot that had a lot of editing applied, but not so much that it looked completely different from the original. More of an enhancement, if you will.

This is from a shoot I had a couple years ago. This model highlighted a photo by another photographer as something she wanted to try. I saw it and since I have a dog cage already, I asked her if she would like to work on it together.

We tried different ideas and while we were working I came up with this concept. The whole thing was lit with a single softbox directly overhead on a boom so you can't see the light stand off to the side. Once I had it on the computer I could tell it was going to need a little work to create what it was I was seeing in my mind's eye.

First I pulled down the exposure just slightly, but turned the brightness down to darken the whole scene without ruining the shadow detail. I pushed the "definition" to its highest level to really give the photo some localized contrast. I wanted it to look harsh. I also desaturated by about twenty percent.

I added a slight tint of murky green to give it a kind of dirty, oily look and also added a little vignette to darken the edges of the image and force the viewer to concentrate on the girl, but no so much that you lose the leash in the hand of the master.

One thing you might not notice is the wire of the remote shutter release dangling across the lower right corner of the frame. The model's friend was pressing the button for me (the camera was on a tripod) and I didn't notice until I saw these on the computer that the wire was visible to the lens. Luckily, it's black and it was off to the side. Ugh, I felt so dumb for not having checked that when they were still in the studio.

Anyway, here's the after and before pictures:

You can see the original image is way too colorful and cheery. Not the right feel for this subject.
