This may or may not work as I'm trying to upload a picture downloaded to my phone. It was taken of me at a civil war reenactment and then I edited it as close as I could to being like a tintype

Ekserb you make me wanna do something with the muskets and 58 remington

I remember seeing a picture on a gun forum many years ago depicting some manner of black powder rifle with all kinds of "tactical" accessories stuck onto it. It even had Picatinny rails aound the barrel at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. It was hilarious.

The closest I could find was this. Enjoy.

I did. I read about a technique using pine needles to mask the spray paint and combined that with some judicious sponge painting for the details. I love it and I'm looking forward to doing a few others.

Here's another shot with better lighting:

The shotgun is next! :)

Very, very nice....looks like it was made that way....can't wait to see the shotgun!!!

And here's a snapshot of my Browning shotgun with new paint. I think the pistol came out better only because the smaller scale of the handgun makes the pattern more invisible, but, as you can see, it's still effective camouflage.

I must say I like it. Im not a hunter though so thats something I probably wont attempt on my guns. Are you a collector as well?

I'm neither a hunter nor collector, but I do love target shooting. There is a free public range near where I live and I go out every few weeks and throw some rounds downrange. Depending on which gun I'm shooting, it could be a few dozen to a couple hundred.

Plus, I'm getting ready for the zombie apocalypse, dontcha know.

I hear ya there. As nice as modern guns are there's just somethin about the front stuffers and smoke poles that I love even more. Maybe its the history or maybe its the faces of the other guys at the range when the smoke clears. I need to take some good pictures of them before it starts to snow too bad. Maybe tomorrow morning.

And you said this wasn't an erotic pictures. Lol. Great job on the guns. I wish I could do that. It would be cheaper then buying new guns in camo.

Very nice work on the guns Phil, extremely effective.

Have you ever put them down somewhere and then not been able to find them?? :)

It is refreshing to hear you are not a hunter but rather shoot on a range. I've no doubt there would be many, if they had an arsenal such as yours, would do their best to put a few species of animals on the endangered list.

Let me be clear: I do not begrudge hunters their right to hunt (though I detest a "hunter" who pays thousands of dollars to be led by a guide through a preserve directly to the semi-captive animal just so he can have a new trophy for the wall of his den), and many of the world's greatest conservationists have been hunters. I just have no desire for it, though I think it is a worthy skill and one that I would like to be learned in. I'm just not "into it." My brother does hunt (with a traditional bow and arrows) sometimes, but as far as I know he has never bagged a single animal. :) I prefer to see just how small a target I can hit, or sometimes just the sounds and smells of the gun range are enough to keep me spending money on ammunition.

My military experience does give me a desire to see my firearms in something a little less obvious than Basic Black, and designing my own camouflage has a certain artistic appeal. Plus, it just looks wicked awesome.

It's funny how something designed to aid invisibility would appeal to a narcissist with an exhibitionist streak.

The thing is, you can do this. It's simple!

I first disassembled the guns and degreased the parts with alcohol. I used Krylon Camouflage (with Fusion technology) spray paint in typical rattle cans (Walmart, $4.44 each). First an all-over base coat of Khaki, followed by Olive and Brown sprayed through a bed of pine needles. Yes, pine needles. I read about the trick on a gun forum. Then I just dabbed on some paint with a sponge dipped in a puddle of spray paint. The sponge painting gives a more detailed pattern over the blurry pattern of the pine needle mask. It's like a pattern within a pattern and does a really effective job of breaking up the outline of the weapon. (Mine is actually a hybrid paint job; the pine needle and sponge techniques were two ideas that I combined for my own guns. I'm told mine looks a lot like a new ATACS camo pattern being tested by the military.)

The Krylon isn't as durable as something like Duracoat or Cerakote, but it's super cheap and easier to remove if you make a mistake or change your mind. I won't mind if the surface eventually shows chips, scrapes or other signs of wear—that's part of the appeal of keeping and using guns for a long time. I know a lot of soldiers in the field use the same paint while deployed in foreign lands because it gives them useable camouflage while still allowing them to remove the coating if they have to. Easy to touch up in the field, too.

Crystal clear I would say......just making conversation.

William Shatner hunts or hunted with a bow and arrow as I recall. He came to Australia many years ago and hunted feral pigs and goats.

After multiple edits and re-edits, I've finally finished a video I made over the Thanksgiving weekend. I went to an off-road park near my current home and met with some other Jeep enthusiasts. We played follow-the-leader for a couple hours and did a little rock crawling. Look for my black Cherokee near the end:
