Oh... photos

They enjoy it in many ways. Mostly we're online on forums like M.A.I.L. and TRL. RenFests are a good place to see maille, but only the big players can afford to show their mad mailling skillz there. There are regional gatherings and such, and of course all the conferences will attract some. DragonCon is a big one.

But really, it's a calming hobby to most. It's something to do to wind down after work. Some people soak in hot baths, some people get massages, and some of us make chainmaille. ;)

And other things:devil:;)

you have more patients then i do for that kind of stuff. I am also look foward to the pic of you in chainmail armor:devil:!!

If you ever wanted to try (because I'm all for throwing my addictions at others and trying to get them hooked) I recommend TRL as a supplier because they have the best prices, even with shipping times and costs; cheap pliers from your local hardware store that you can file the teeth down on, or find some electricians pliers without teeth; and CGMail.com for some amazing rendered tutorials along with some pretty good aspect ratio information for each weave.

Hogring pliers might work. They're used on fences to secure bottom wire.

They work for steel and titanium. But they mark softer metals like a son of a bitch. Most people that work with steel rings use lineman's pliers because you really need the leverage to get a good closure.

Okay, I wasn't sure if you were aware of them.
I guess on a fence a few barb-like marks is a good thing, but not on something you want to wear.
Unless you want to look like you ran through some sticker bushes.

the thought of the amount of welding to build a suit of mail (even small pieces) is staggering.

For the most part, hauberks and other armor pieces are made of steel and they don't care about the marks because they wear stuff under it so it's not touching the skin. For aluminum maille they'll file the teeth in pliers to grooves so they don't mark up the rings but can still grip the heavier gauges. For titanium, you just bite your tongue and hope for the best.

They actually have welding machines designed specifically for use on the jump rings used in maille, but it's still a lot of work. And just think, if you thought that was a lot, you should try to rivet it all. 100k rings either welded or riveted is an ungodly amount of work.

And then there are those that use split rings... >.> Crazy people.

I'm just hoping that if I ever get to experience RMB's bottom that there won't be a wire there.
