Perfect Albums

I was wowed by that weird little song cycle. The one about his father knocked the wind out of me. If I remember correctly, that song could only be fully heard by listening through just one of the stereo channels.
Goodnight Sweet Prince
That song makes me cry everytime. So beautiful and powerful.

”Goodnight sweet prince
If you’re still there
I never shed a tear that night
I’d been crying for a year

Goodnight sweet prince
I leaned and whispered in his ear”

Every Picture Tells a Story - Rod Stewart
Despite his successes with the Faces and two previous solo albums, this is the record that made him break out as an international superstar.

Side one is great, but side two is the most killer 2nd side in history, with Maggie May, Mandolin Wind, (I know) I'm Losing You, and the exquisite Reason to Believe, this is a perfect album.
Agree. Could have easily said Never A Dull Moment too. I might have to write that one up. I love Rod Stewart. Faces too.

Kill Tunes by the Leaving Trains is a perfect album. Their first album (well down blue highway) is a jangly paisley underground classic. And some of the songs on this album have that feel.

But where the album really takes off are the punchy early punk numbers. They do a great version of Private Affair by the Saints and a bunch of other rockers.

And a great nihilistic love song- Vicki (can’t find a video) and the best song on the album… ⬇️

There’s no filler - it’s all killer.

Kill Tunes is a perfect album.

Sad Wings of Destiny ~ Judas Priest

Was the album that sold my soul to JP. Quite the perfect album ..

I know everyone talks about Thriller, but Off the Wall is the album I keep coming back to. It just feels alive in a way few records do.

That blend of disco, funk, rock, and R&B is effortless, and the combination of Quincy Jones’ production with Rod Temperton’s songwriting is magic. Those melodies and grooves still sound fresh decades later, and Michael’s voice is joyful and confident.

Songs like Rock with You, Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough, and She’s Out of My Life are timeless. Off the Wall is the moment Michael Jackson truly became Michael Jackson, his own.

My list starts with musicians that never made anything I didn't want to hear. All their albums are perfect:
Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings
Heilung
Kate Wolf
Lee Hazlewood
Leonard Cohen
Lucinda Williams
Magnetic Fields
Marianne Faithfull
Morphine
Neil Diamond
Neko Case
Patti Smith
Poe
Portishead
Richard Hawley
Richard & Mimi Farina
Roy Orbison
Simon & Garfunkel
Sinead O'Connor
Townes Van Zandt

These musicians made some perfect albums and some others I don't like as much, or I don't have much of their work:
Al Stewart
America
eels, Souljacker and Rotten World Blues on one CD
Einsturzende Neubaten, 2x4
Emmylou Harris
Gordon Lightfoot
Jefferson Airplane
Johnny and June Carter Cash
Liz Phair, Exile in Guyville and whip-smart
PJ Harvey
Vangelis, Chariots of Fire

There might be some perfect albums somewhere in the works of Judy Collins and Carly Simon.

I had never heard of The Leaving Trains but I like 'em.. Not sure about their timeframe but they remind me of those punk/rockabilly bands from the '90s and '00s like Dash Rip Rock and the Reverend Horton Heat. I bet they were fun in a bar.

They were amazing. They were around from the early 80s to mid 90s - part of the LA underground, paisley underground.

Their lyrics are amazing.

You inspired me. It’s a snowy Sunday morning, and my wife are listening to this album right now as we speak.

Whole album here:

blind melon - soup

sophomore album, most memorable intro ever, gut wrenching lyrics, raw vocals, and some of the best artwork i’ve ever beheld regarding addiction. not at all like “no rain,” and difficult to listen to, as he died shortly after its recording. but, it’s an immaculate album. i wish shannon hoon could’ve stuck around longer.

Galaxie, New Life and Lemonade are all outstanding songs that sound nothing like No Rain.

The documentary about him ‘All I Can Say,’ is fantastic. Uses mostly his own video footage he filmed from 90-95.

I think I've seen that documentary but I'll have to double check. He died so young that there's limited footage of him... I think I've seen most of the footage available. But if there is unseen Blind Melon content out there -- I must check it out!

For me? That album is all about 2x4 and Toes Across the Floor. Mouthful of Cavities too... that song in haunting.

Such a unique voice... I miss it!

I guess nobody who really knows me will be surprised to know I am pretty big Justin Townes Earle fan. I am currently reading his Biography What To Do When You’re Lonesome. I could pick seversl of his albums but Harlem River Blues is probably my favorite and perfect. Released in 2010 and largely centered about time he spent living in NYC. I actually went to NY and stayed in Harlem in 2016 largely because of this album. Sadly he would pass away 2020 at the age of 38. His dad, the legendary Steve Earle, has since released an album of Justin’s songs, JT. I typically only share one song per album to not overwhelm people or muck up thread but will share two this time, One More Night In Brooklyn and Wanderin.

So you pack up your bags, start looking west but tonight
Ordering in, making damn sure we don't leave nothing behind
Baby, put your hands on me
Let's get real high and just go to sleep
It's one more night in Brooklyn, baby, it's just you and me

Yes, oh lord, I've seen your oceans, I've seen your mountains high
I've been lost inside your cities, I've seen the underside
Yeah, I know the troubles that plague a troubled mind
But they can't catch me I'm a wanderin'
No they can't catch me I'm a wanderin'
No they can't catch me I'm a wanderin'

In the world of single songs and playlist I still try to find time to listen to entire albums. I have an extensive collection of old vinyl and cds. During summer hurricanes, when we were trying to conserve power to phones, we were having some kick ass listening parties. Anyways, what is a perfect album to you?

Here is one. Sweet Life by Varnaline.

After the solitude of A Shot and a Beer, Anders Parker reassembled his touring band to make the pastoral rock record Sweet Life. Recorded in an old church in Upstate New York, the albums finds the band in high form. There is a spaciousness and grandeur to the sound of the record. All the songs are presented in high-fidelity, Technicolor sound.

"Gulf of Mexico" opens the record with a slow rolling wave of sound. Parker's yearning falsetto crests over the top, calling out over the band. Next comes "Northern Lights" with the wail of a pedal steel as the band moves down the tracks. Then comes the anger of "Now You're Dirt." The album bounds back and forth between darkness and light, gravity and levity, blood and air. The album closes with the title track, "Sweet Life," which opens with a string section. Slowly, from the background the band swells forward into a surging crush, taking the record to an epic close.

Really hard to share one song but this hits home.

Saviors

A good thread ruined by the insistence of certain posters who insist on posting multiple times and including YouTube videos of every song on an album. now it won’t load properly. Latecomer seems the worst culprit, we don’t need every album in his collection. It’s a pity.
