As for Boxing Day, I was told as a boy (who grew up in a village which had the remains of 13th century castle) that the Lord of the Manor (or similar) dispensed gifts to poor people on the Feast of St Stephen (26th Dec), which they carried or dragged away in boxes. See, 'Good King Wenceslas!'
