Psych Thread: You teach me, I teach you

I'm still here!

I'm just reading all of your stories. My reading list, and subsequently my free time, has filled up fast thanks to all of you.

Btw, lovecraft68, I did read your first chapter of Siblings. That bedroom twist gave me probably exactly as much whiplash as you hoped. Do you want me to tell you it turned me on? It didn't not turn me on. Which is to say, I can uncomfortably admit that the sexual tension leading up to that moment was getting to me on a physiological level. I couldn't say I was rooting for these siblings to - well - you know - but my body was in a state of confused bother.

If their secret sexual relationship was cleverly foreshadowed or telegraphed (aside from the title, or the obvious expectations of the genre), I missed it. I thought I was properly engrossed, too! I picked up on all the trauma of course, and I was curious how much more we might see her insomnia come up, but I wouldn't necessarily say I saw enough connectable dots to predict they were already engaged in active, on-going incest. This isn't a critique, btw. It's my best attempt at shoehorning psychology into my feedback. Hm. Now that I type that out loud I can see how maybe that is a critique. Whatever!

For being a first effort, you were already writing with bigtime confidence. In fact, I felt compelled to peek at some of your other more recent work, to see where your confidence led you. Sure enough, it led you to someplace disgusting. But also to someplace easy to read, ambitious, and erotically effective. Those 40k+ posts you've made here haven't been for nothing, have they? You are a proper guru. Your passion is magnetic. I have dogeared A Woman's Touch as one I want to come back and "finish" once I'm done reading everything else I'm already promised to. Why did I go and ask for so much homework?

Shoot, lovecraft68, I'm also just now seeing the comment where you accuse people of regularly misgendering you here on the forums. Sorry, I had also assumed you were male. If I may give you a backhanded compliment, you present as many things widely considered attractively masculine: wry, cocksure, aloof, etc. It was still shitty of me to jump to conclusions. But fwiw, I actually still liked you even when I thought you had a cock. And that you may take as a forehanded compliment.

Your assumptions weren't wrong, lovecraft68 is male.

Welcome to Lit. Happy reading and writing here!

Glad you added the “we think”. I’ve seen no correlation between wisdom and age on this site (or anywhere else) 🤣.

Maybe it was going to grad school. But my education enlightened me on one thing. How little I know. I’ve spoken Nobel Laureates and they are humble about the limitations of their knowledge.

I don’t feel much different now. I know some shit. There is a lot more I don’t and never will.

Em
An old cat once said; "I'm not young enough to know everything."

I like the assumption that experience comes with age. It doesn't, it comes with circumstance. Do we know hers? No, we don't.

What I know is a bunch of jackals are making baseless assumptions and having this arrogant tone of "You could never figure me out."

I mean, how could anyone profile such a complex crowd of highly intelligent and successful know it alls the likes of which we have here. So desperate to be special, and edgy and so complicated.

Or so you want to think.

People here are so self centered they can't possibly see anything in anyone else. FFS this crowd can't tell the difference between a male and female poster
It's not like screen names and avatars are a dead giveaway, always. How's somebody supposed to know, if it's nither eluded to, or outright said? I didn't know AG31 was a chick and isn't SilkStockings or whatever a guy?

No offense intended, but I'm not looking to have my characters -and by extension myself-examined. I know who and what they are because I created them.

Love the attitude here that a younger person can't know anything.

If Lily hasn't been driven off she can start with judgmental narcissist in her profiles for most here.
A bit of a change in tone over time, is t it?

Is there a “knight in shining armor syndrome” that any psychologists would care to analyze? “Damsel in distress disorder?” The need to prove how pro-female you are seems over compensatory. This is the second “rescue” you’ve inserted yourself into regarding people present in this thread alone. And I may even be undercounting!

Wouldn’t a true and sincere believer in equality say “these women are intelligent and self sufficient and can take care of themselves without my coming to the rescue just fine”? Especially in a case like this, where you had to u-turn the gallant steed on which you were galloping.

And Em. Jesus Christ, hun! Let someone else get attention for a while, hun. Because hun, I, and other people too, were talking about another person who also expends an inordinate amount of time demonstrating her wisdom. Let others have the spotlight once in a while. [EDIT: Self moderating myself. I was a bit over the top crabby. In hindsight I’ll convert my rant from epic rant to regular rant]

OP, welcome. I hope you stick around. Em. Let others speak. LC, neither OP nor Em nor all the other females the world over require your rescue services. I seem to have more faith in women than you do! And Less of a need to prove it to myself and others, too.

Hm. I’m grumpy today. looks like I picked the wrong week to give up anti-bite-my-tongue-agulants!

Nah. These days psychiatrists have fifteen minute appointments to play with your meds. You want actual analysis and treatment? Go to a Licensed Professional Counselor, or Clinical Social Worker (or their equivalent in your neck of the woods)

The psychs in my ficverse are Licensed Professional Counselors big into cognitive behavioral therapy and self-assessment.

After all of the cinema disasters of recent years, this thread looks promising in the sense of the faltering pop-corn industry. Big support!

Why don't you explain the differences for us, since you're obviously so good at it?

The problem isn't people misgendering him.

The "problem" is he believes several of the women here are actually men trolling the forum.

And he believes many of us are being played for fools.

Of course, he has no evidence to support his accusations.

But since when has that ever dissuaded anyone from their convictions, right?

Every time I read this thread's title, my brain starts singing this...

(Pokémon Gotta catch 'em all)
It's you and me
I know it's my destiny (Pokémon)
Oh, you're my best friend
In a world we must defend
(Pokémon Gotta catch 'em all)
A heart so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I'll teach you (Ooh, ooh)
Pokémon! (Gotta catch 'em all)
Gotta catch 'em all
Yeah

Thanks for that.

I was literally just thinking this, thank you... I'm glad I'm not alone!

The success of this animated series and many that came before and after still baffle me. I don't get the Western obsession with this type of anime, at all...

Because they're tied with merchandise and are typically full of action and good looking character designs. It's not that baffling. Pretty much any anime is better than most american cartoons.

It is a matter of taste then, because I disagree, very much so. To be fair, I believe the best cartoons came out as a combination of Western production and storytelling and Japanese artists who didn't infantilize their characters or make them completely androgynous, resulting in a gem such as this one https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088631/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_t_1

But leave everything to the Japanese and... yeah.

It all comes down to taste. I was mainly talking about art style- something that's fallen in american cartoons, the last few years with the proliferation of Calarts and Family Guy copy cats, like Brickleberry. Sure there's lots of unique art styles that can't really be quantified, that are quality in their own right, such as Samourai Jack or MotorCity. Your examples a good example of great art(even though personally I think the 90s/00s version looks better) and how far it's dropped by wide margin, outside some examples.

So far two companies that are really killing it and keeping somewhat traditional american art styles are DC and Marvel. Disney is hit and miss. Although there are some bad looking anime, some of it is intentional(Shin Chan), most of it by whoever artist or studio has been consistant with quality since the 80s. Most anime quality today is what they might've reserved for movies a decade two, or go. Studio Ghibli has never done no wrong and a lot of those movies tend to feel like they still use 70s/80s anime style. Even the most generic looking anime, like the style Pokèmon used up until about two years ago, looks better than anything Cartoon Network has draw itself since about... well when things like Gumball and Regular Show started coming about. That reboot of Thundercats, and three of the Ben 10 series are the best style wise, that CN has put out in near twenty years, along with Justice League, Teen Titans, Megas XLR, and Symbionic Titan. We can't forget Primal. Unique styles are questionable, but those shows are more classic traditional in design, than most new toons.

This is something I've been wanting to write about for the longest. You can name just about any CN, Netflix, Nickelodeon toon in the last five years and they just won't compair to something like Ghost In The Shell, any Gundam series, Full Metal Alchemist, Durarara!, or Fooly Cooly. Style wise.

And Em. Jesus Christ, hun! Let someone else get attention for a while, hun. Because hun, I, and other people too, were talking about another person who also expends an inordinate amount of time demonstrating her wisdom. Let others have the spotlight once in a while.

Can you do us a favor?

Can you and @lovecraft68 get together and compile a list of rules and regulations you'd like us to adhere to about what topics are allowed, and how often we're allowed to post?

Also, some guidelines on exactly what is and isn't acceptable when it comes to expressing ourselves would be very helpful.

I'm sure you two in your infinite knowledge of exactly how this forum should be run will be able to come up with something we all agree with.

Thanks in advance for your time in this matter.

Oh, that makes more sense.

I mean yeah. It tracks that an erotica forum, ie, a community of horny creative escapists, would be full of folks trying on new identities. But it’s okay. I genuinely don’t feel like it’s trolling if everyone is getting along.

Sorry Lily for derailing your thread, but at least it's not Star Wars related. 😬

Samurai Jack and the original series of FMA. 🤘
It’s okay. And 🤘 indeed to anything Genndy Tartakovsky has ever touched.

The thread would probably be more focused if I were doing a better job of showing my face and keeping us on task! I promise to try and get some official psych thoughts on here today for those of you who asked for them. It has been a nerdy delight getting to look at your characters and stories.

Hello, self-aware grumpy person! I have to admit I actually appreciate lovecraft68’s supportive posture toward me and toward, I guess, women, though I can tell there’s some beef on their plate toward others around here, some angst in their motivation. Coincidentally, I feel similarly toward you, although like you I wish you had maybe waited until you’d cooled off a little to say your piece.

I don’t believe Knight In Shining Armor Syndrome meets the criteria for a bona fide disorder. Tbh, it sounds more contextual than behavioral, like something a sociologist would want to weigh in on. If I’m humoring you though, then sure, it might show soft signs of histrionic (attention-needy) or dependent (feeling-needed-needy) tendencies; again nothing approaching a PD diagnosis, but maybe in this context it sometimes presents as disruptive or performative.

That said, both of you seem to like to call bullshit when you see it. I actually like this, in theory. It’s got a whiff of existential psych to it that I am 100% here for. But again, I just wish we could all be a little less unforgiving. If it helps, try to see yourselves like I do! I am brand new to all of your foibles, and so I’m sick of none of you. Yet. 😘

I could. But I don’t think you’d listen, since you already ignored the one I posted already about riding in to the rescue. 🎠 (Thou hast been bazinga’d, m’lord)

I will apologize for being overly cranky to Em. It was late, a headache woke me up. Call me Captain McCluskey. Too grouchy. Em took over the thread a little more so than how she usually takes over threads. But there’s no rule about that. My apologies.
