It took a bit for me to get into the book...but I really enjoyed it overall.

I liked the beginning. I thought it was quirky and sad without being twee... which a lit of things that attempt to be quirky fall into in my opinion.

Still if you like fantastic writing... check out my first ever submission to Lit.... NOT! ;)

It was accepted today.... and shows I have no right whatsoever to criticise anyone...

Razzy and I thought it'd be a cool idea if we had a reading group here on Lit. :)

The idea is we start with a book.... and all read it.. and then discuss it. It can ve done in multi convos on MSN or Yahoo.. or just a few from the group... even comments in the thread... all I as is you do NOT give any plot spoilers to people who haven't read as far as you.

I propose we start with a novel called 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire. I have Foof ( ) to thank for recommending the book. She raved about it so much, and I only got it to please her...but I have just started it and BOY am I enjoying it, (and I have not even seen the Oz movie all the way through.. so no in-depth knowledge is needed, though it helps). So thank you wonderful Foof. :rose:

Synopsis
An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Anyone wishing to take part... please say... I hope the first book is acceptable.

After that I propose people nominate and champion their book choice (hopefully that no-one.. not even the proposer has read)... and people can vote for their choice (not their own..lol).. and the one with the most votes is read next... we would do that once the discussion about Wicked is over...

How does that sound folks? :)

Could anyone interested in joining our group please let us know?

Just picked up the link here...

Count me in.

The irony is that I've just finished this book. A good friend of mine made some of the costumes for the UK production of the musical. Though I haven't seen it yet, I suspect a lot of the story would be difficult to translate into am audio visual medium.

It's interesting to see someone elses take on a familiar story, though I have to confess my familliarity with Oz is limited to the movies. I still have a bit of a soft spot for "Return To Oz" which came out when I was young.

It's a well visualised world, complete with internal history and religion.

Personally I felt the story lost it's way towards the end. Perhaps it had to in order to match the two stories.

I'd like to read the sequel.

Dragonteeth...I loved Wicked but hated the sequel...just sayin. ;)

...waiting for my book to arrive. supposedly it shipped the day after i ordered it. wish me luck :)

Have the book and have finally started it.

Right from the start, I like the completly different view of the old familiar characters. It also makes me reconsider Dorothy...perhaps no longer quite the innocent farm girl.
