Sarah Palin

A world gone mad.

The world is going mad. if you think there is too much politics here 19 of the first 40 threads on the GB are of political subjects. Who gave those loonies a vote?:D

The poetry board however is a political wasteland, those good people are talking about poetry - and sex.

As long as nobody posts anything in support of a Republican

In otherwords BULLSHIT!

No, DP.

I think what Bel said was that the site he quoted, fact check, is a non-partisan website. Which is true.

People can post whatever but I do call bullshit when I think they are misrepresenting the facts they post.

Opinions are fine - I don't argue those - how can anyone? But I think facts should always be up for discussion.

Poetry and sex?

Cool beans.

:D

Um. Where have Laurel or Manu ever said a thing political on the boards?

And I seem to see you, rox, ami, Jimmy Bob and others taking taking plenty of vicious shots at the Dems and the people supporting them.

Lemme guess. In your opinion when someone criticizes Democratic policies it's dissent. When others criticize Republican policy it's betrayal.

I'm thinking you are all a bit overwrought about the preggers daughter. The rest of the world doesn't seem to be nearly as excited about it as the people here are.

That was the case with Clinton's blow job too. The rest of the world thought we were nuts.

Indeed.

And yet it was discussed with as much furor. Perhaps more so, as the elected "right" saw no need to publicly hold back their views as the left is doing now.

DOC

And who gives a goddamn what the Euros think? Theyre butt-boys for the Muslims....and like it.

Who care about the owners? They don't ever post here. Just commenting on the 99% of you who won't except anything but the furthest left viewpoint.

ROB is a waste of bandwidth. He lives with his mother and has a cat.

Will Palin withdraw or be asked to? (remember Harriet Meiers)

note to zoot: i respect bristol and feel sorry for her position; she stands to be in the limelight for some time, barring drastic changes.

sarah p's advocacy of 'abstinence based' school hs programs with NO explicit sec education does get thrown into an interesting light, though. no? she should be treated respectfully of course.

the issue of mccain's judgment, and the thoroughness of his vetting process can still be raised, however.

The question of Mccain's judgment is fast becoming a central issue here.

Apparently, McC really wanted Lieberman and was only talked out of him at the last minute. Palin wasn't on the short list as recently as the Wednesday of the democratic convention when she was suddenly vetted in a 15-minute interview and word was leaked that the choice was made.

It's not clear that she understood the demands that would be made on her as a VEEP candidate. She has to be crash-coursed in the subtleties of foreign policy while maintaining a punishing campaign schedule, fending off an abusive and angry press (they're furious at being fooled) and trying to keep her family together, caring for a 5 month-old special-needs infant and pregnant teenage daughter and still fulfilling her duties as governor of Alaska. It's going to be a terribly gruelling two months. I don;t know if anyone could handle this.

The odds of her leaving the ticket are already increasing according to the London bookies. They're 1 out of 8 today, down from 1 out of 20 yesterday.

The vetting wasn't thorough. Some of the things that are coming out about her are:

--She smoked marijuana as a youth

--As mayor of Wasilla she tried to have books banned from the library and tried to have the librarian fired when she opposed her.

--Rather than being a reformer, she hired a lobbyist to divert pork-barrel money to the town. She took $27 million from Washington, $15 million of it to build a railroad from Wasilla to the ski resort hometown of Ted Stevens.

--She was entirely for the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against it, and when she turned against it she still took the money and spent it on other projects.

--She took campaign money from VECO, the same oil and gas combine that was in bed with Ted Stevens

--She's referred to the war in Iraq as a "task from God." She said it was “God’s will” that the feds contribute to a $30 billion gas pipeline she wants built in Alaska.

You've got to wonder if this is the person you're going to trust to negotiate with Vladimir Putin over the fate of Georgia, or hammer out a deal with Iran over their nuclear program, or deal with the new leader of Pakistan, who according to some reports is certifiably insane. Is she going to craft an alternative energy program, deal with the deficit, do something about global warming, which she doesn't believe in?

Or maybe she'll be just such a dynamic and compelling personality that all this won't matter. One thing you've got to give her: she's got balls.

I am sorry but I am just so frustrated when people who hold very common, easily found beliefs try to play the outcast card.

I have the furthest left viewpoint and I am FRINGE! I am a card carrying anarchist. Far more people agree with you than with me. I can pretty well predict that any time I express my viewpoint, everybody present will disagree. I'm lucky if they don't treat me like I'm insane.

Do I complain? Do I whine? NO.

Friedrich Nietzsche - “The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.”

I am so tired of this "poor, embattled Republican" routine I could puke blood.

I'm liking you more and more with every post.

Anarch some more.

Huh, I hadn't read that yet about her being chosen. I a post on the GB that the Rove camp wanted Lieberman, the GOP folks wanted Romney, so McC chose Palin. Didn't bother to verify it anywhere, though.

I assume that if she gets in office she'd be largely a ceremonial VP.

A ceremonial VP? If the president dies, she's the president! That whole "heartbeat away from the presidency" thing isn't just rhetoric. And McCain is fairly old. Even if he wasn't, young people die every day, and the president is often a target. We can't afford to have a whack job for VP, because that could end up giving us a(nother) whack job for president.

In Sarah’s words, I’m “calling bullshit” on this one. (Although with the exception of outright fabrications there’s no such thing as “bullshit” or even “facts” in political matters, the definition of which is that they are inherently ambiguous.)

Ayn Rand said about welfare that if it’s offered and you’re eligible you should take it. (And then presumably send a few bucks of it to the Chamber of Commerce to lobby against welfare.)

Earmarks are like welfare, and the recipients are local governments. It would be fiscal malpractice for any local government official to not pursue that money. Doing so does not preclude opposing the system of earmarks for its corrupting influence on Congress, or make one a hypocrite for opposing it as a method of redistributing tax dollars taken from the states.

I've always been confused by the connection of anarchy and the left. Anarchy means one supports no government - a radical libertarian position. Today's left are nothing if not to-the-death defenders of the welfare state - the epitome of statist paternalism and many other things offensive to radical individualists.

No government does not mean that society is not run in any way. A lot of people are confused on that point.

We would still have a well run society. Or we would still be trying to have a well run society. And how we would run that society is still the subject of great debate among those of us who call ourselves anarchists.

The one thing we all completely agree on is that we shouldn't do it by handing over a great deal of power to a select few. Things seem to get pear shaped when you do that.
