Sarah Palin

I don't see how you can compare Michelle Obama and Bristol Palin. One is an adult who is on the stump with her husband and making campaign speeches. The other is 17 and has nothing, so far at least, to do with the campaign.

I understand that Sarah Palin's husband had a DUI twenty or so years ago. Is attacking him over that the same as attacking Michelle? I mean, they are both spouses of candidates. How about when the Obama camp attacked the spouse of his primary Dem opponent. Was that okay? How is that different?

Box, we're merrily tossing around tidbits about the situation in the AH, okay? So are some blogs here and there.

Obama's camp is not attacking her on this issue. They said they wouldn't, they aren't, so what is your argument?

I know Obama isn't, but some are. So, why is it even a subject for discussion?

Will Palin withdraw or be asked to? (remember Harriet Meiers)

note to zoot: i respect bristol and feel sorry for her position; she stands to be in the limelight for some time, barring drastic changes.

sarah p's advocacy of 'abstinence based' school hs programs with NO explicit sec education does get thrown into an interesting light, though. no? she should be treated respectfully of course.

the issue of mccain's judgment, and the thoroughness of his vetting process can still be raised, however.

That's true. I think a bigger issue is the power that the religious right has and why he gave in to them. McCain's first choice (according to advisers) was Lieberman, but McCain passed him over due to his pro-choice beliefs because he did not want to upset religious conservatives. So much for being a maverick...

Lieberman was mentioned as a possibility some time ago. He said he had no interest in running for VP again. McC. might have privately suggested it again and, if the response was the same, L. would have been dropped from consideration.

Part of vettng a candidate is finding out if the potential candidate is willing to accept the nomination.

Why is anything a subject for discussion? We talk about things... we gossip. Like it or not, it's part of what human animals do, whether it's morally "right" or it isn't. No one cares when Lakesha from Detroit or Shelby from Beverly Hills gets knocked up out of wedlock... but when Britney Spears' sister does, or Palin's daughter does, now it's a topic of conversation - because they're in the public eye. That's all it takes. Being in the public eye immediately affords you less of a private life. Right or wrong, we as a society have created this monster.

We talk about celebrity lives because they are a microcosm (albiet often a twisted fun-house mirror version...) of our own. I can't talk about your daughter or granddaughter who got knocked up and decided to abort or adopt the baby out, and whether I feel that's right or wrong - but we can use celebrity cases to make our own, and we do.

More importantly, remember Thomas Eagleton.

I'm thinking you are all a bit overwrought about the preggers daughter. The rest of the world doesn't seem to be nearly as excited about it as the people here are.

Not true, and you know it.

The topic was finances until Box brought her up again.

Because it's not an issue if getting preggers is what seventeen-year-old daughters do, right, Rox?

Earth to ROXANNE

Palin is in the NYT today....3 articles.

Everyone keeps saying NO BIG DEAL but apparently it is a big deal.

Nearly half of girls between the ages of 15 and 19 have had sex at least once, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, and some 750,000 become pregnant every year. The vast majority of teen pregnancies -- 82% -- are unplanned. Of those pregnancies, 29% end in abortion; 14% are miscarriages; and 57% result in live births.

Okay, okay, okay!

I posted a story to ireport for sophiajane's friend who was beaten by police as a rioter.

Long story - there's a thread about it - anyway.

While there, I found this, which made my eyes cross. What in the heck does this mean?

Something about the fiance's sister, who has a MySpace page, which includes a picture of Sarah Palin as Mother-in-Law to the child called Trig.

I need ibuprofen now. Or rum.

I didn't bring it up. :( It was still on the table, being bandied about by Pure and Zoot and E65, and I responded to an earlier comment by Belegon.

Box, I do apologize, that didn't come out the way I meant. :rose:

I was trying to clarify that the baby topic wasn't really the focus of the conversation.

Nothing?

Less than nothing?

Somebody spends too much time on Myspace and wants to have gotten something out of it so they convince themselves there is meaning in something you couldn't pay me enough to care about?

Am I getting close?

I still need ibuprofen.

But all this is because getting preggers is what those seventeen-year-old girls want, yes? Even if they say they don't or it's unplanned, they're having sex because deep down, they want to get nailed, right? Because that's what they do, right? So, Bristol is just doing what's perfectly natural to being a seventeen-year-old girl, yes?

But we've only just begun.

How long until your desire for ibuprofen becomes a desire for a full frontal lobotomy?

Shall we start taking bets?

I shall cease the ibuprofen and switch over to rum immediately.

Infinitely more fun than thoughts of a lobotomy.

Excellent choice!

A word of warning, when heroin starts looking appealing, it's time to turn off CNN.

I think it's clear that these two families are close, probably due to the relationship between Palin's daughter and her new baby-daddy. The sister probably was just using the MIL reference in that way, assuming the two would probably end up together, and assuming the new baby as a "brother."

2008 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE COMPARISON TALKING POINTS

This entire post is full of stuff that is either opinion misstated as fact or else is just plain wrong.

Stating opinion as opinion is fine. Stating it as inevitable fact is wrong.

Let's address the tax info... since that got the most attention. The majority of the figures here originated in a chain email that has already been debunked by several non-partisan sources... but just for an example, from factcheck.org we can show you this...

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/a_new_stitch_in_a_bad_pattern.html
factcheck.org said:
We spoke with Len Berman, director of the nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, which has produced one of the most authoritative analyses of the two candidates’ tax plans. When we asked him if Obama’s claim that he would “cut taxes for 95 percent of all working families” was true, Berman told FactCheck.org that it was “consistent with our estimates.” Overall, the TPC found that Obama’s plan would produce a tax cut for 81.3 percent of all households, and a cut for 95.5 percent of all households with children.
Under Obama's plan, the TPC estimates that people (or couples) making between $37,595 and $66,354 a year would see an average savings of $1,118 on their taxes.

Under McCain's plan, on the other hand, those same individuals would save $325 on average — $793 less than the average savings under Obama's plan.

Put It on Our Tab

The ad also claims that Obama and congressional Democrats would bring about "years of deficits." But (and we've reported this before, too), the fact is both candidates' economic plans would fail to bring an end to deficit spending, and by that measure, McCain's is worse than Obama's. According to the TPC analysis, Obama's tax plan would increase the debt by $3.5 trillion by 2018, while McCain's plan would bring about a projected $5 trillion increase in the same time frame.

And this is a NON-Partisan website. As well as several places on the front page talking about McCain's stretching the truth or making up facts, they chastise Obama for missing key facts in an ad linking McCain to Reed and come down on him for using outdated quotes about the economy in another ad.

I did NOT compare Bristol and Michelle.

I said that Obama was showing restraint because he was telling people to lay off families even though his was being attacked.

How is that comparing Bristol and Michelle, exactly?

For the record, I agree with Obama. Bristol is and should be off-limits.
