CAPITAL GAINS TAX

MCCAIN:

0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples). McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.

OBAMA:

28% on profit from ALL home sales. (How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.)

DIVIDEND TAX

MCCAIN:

15% (no change)

OBAMA:

39.6% - (How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.')

INCOME TAX

MCCAIN

(no changes)

Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $31,250

OBAMA (reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)

Single making 30K - tax $8,400
Single making 50K - tax $14,000
Single making 75K - tax $23,250
Married making 60K - tax $16,800
Married making 75K - tax $21,000
Married making 125K - tax $38,750
Under Obama, your taxes could almost double!

INHERITANCE TAX

MCCAIN

- 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)

OBAMA

Restore the inheritance tax

Many families have lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will only lose them to these taxes.

NEW TAXES PROPOSED BY OBAMA

New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet. New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already) New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity) New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least....New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

My understanding is that an estate, under the repealed inheritance law, had to be worth over $2 million in order to be hit. There's damned few people whose estates fall into that category.

NEW TAXES PROPOSED BY OBAMANew taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

Gee, thanks for comparing Canada to Zimbabwe, DP. I really appreciate it. But hey, we pay less per capita than the U.S. and all our health care indicators are better than yours. I guess I'll continue to be perfectly happy with living in the 3rd World.

Because in the U.S. I'd be dead. Or worse.

And the Dems will try to tax you into the poor house, just like always.

I'm already in the poor house, thanks to the Shrub, sweetie. It's been only in the last year that I've realized we're really lower middle class, and only hanging on by our fingernails at that.

How's that for people with graduate degrees?

But where did you see me criticize you? I just said that every site is different. I could show you opposing information on every single thing you posted.

It's all perception, okay? I didn't slam you or what you wrote. I just remarked how differently we all view what is happening based on our preconceived beliefs.

Hm. Can he change his mind now? Backsies? Do-over?

The complications of being a maverick...

:D

Now, the scary part is... the complications of being an impulsive, hotheaded maverick AFTER he becomes president...

I don't wanna watch.

Just for the record, I totally agree with Obama on this. Palin's daughter's pregnancy should have nothing to do with the campaign. It's a family matter and a non-issue and should be kept totally out of the politicking.

We're talking politics.

Politicians are like used cars. They get washed and waxed and detailed til they sparkle, but beneath the cosmetic film theyre broken and damaged and flawed. We dont like to discover the stains and scratches and cracks before we get them off the lot.

I didn't say you did.
Just don't like the whole redistribution of wealth idea. :)
I can buy about a quarter of what my folks did with the same money. That is inflation which no administration has ever controlled. They may make it go up less, but prices always go up.

He knew about this and made the choice anyway. No reason for a do-over. :D

My parents do not understand our finances. They're retired.

They're shocked when we cannot attend the family reunions in summers - we haven't been able to since 2004.

They pay so much less in taxes than we do. Us, with two kids, little house, paying off student loans, HUGE medical insurance copays (and medical bills, since the kids are young and have to get through all those illnesses) -

At any rate, I don't want someone else to have less so we can have more. I'd like to be paid an appropriate wage as anyone with as much education and experience in any given field.

And I'd like to be able to sleep at night without worrying how we're going to pay for our bills.

I had my racing heartbeat checked a couple of weeks ago. It isn't due to the fact I need to lose a few pounds off my ample butt. No, the doc chalked it up to stress and worry, of all ridiculous things.

So every time I hear someone complain about being overtaxed I have to laugh. I'll compare - I have a feeling we're already paying more.

Anyway. Rant over.

On the sites I saw? We'd pay less in taxes than we are now.

I hear ya. My inlaws do the same thing... they don't get it. He's got a pension from Ford, where he worked for thirty years. For years, they didn't understand how we could both have graduate degrees and not be able to take vacations and do all the things "they did" when their kids were young.

It's only now, since Shrub took office and the world's gone to REAL hell, they're starting to get it. Ford cut his pension, his medical insurance. Now all of a sudden they're all up in arms, and they're starting to understand the concept of not having job security, etc.

The resdistribution of wealth occurs whenever people are taxed though -- whether it's to pay for the military, politicians' salaries or roads we don't drive on. It's a fact of life.

Inflation is also a unfortunate fact of life, but bear in mind the hourly wage that our parents earned, compared to what many people make. A dollar buys less today, but people no longer have to work an hour to earn that dollar.

A little factoid from the Congressional Budget Office.

Adjusting for inflation the income for families in the middle of the U.S. income distribution rose from $41,400 in 1979 to $45,100 in 1997. A nine percent increase.

During the same time period the income of families in the top one percent rose from $420,200 to $1.016 million. A one hundred and forty percent increase.

Wealth is always created and distributed. Once it could be done by working. Now it's done by government. I wonder why things changed?

Question:

Will Palin withdraw or be asked to? (remember Harriet Meiers)

note to zoot: i respect bristol and feel sorry for her position; she stands to be in the limelight for some time, barring drastic changes.

sarah p's advocacy of 'abstinence based' school hs programs with NO explicit sec education does get thrown into an interesting light, though. no? she should be treated respectfully of course.

the issue of mccain's judgment, and the thoroughness of his vetting process can still be raised, however.

I don't think that John McCain would have hammered her... but, given his history and recent behavior both, I do not feel he would have done the same as Obama. Not when dealing with the fact that his wife had been called a traitor for months, that his faith had been under attack, etc. I think his temper would have got involved.

John had a PERFECT opportunity to take exactly that kind of high road a couple weeks ago... "Hey John, what do you think of that Obama Nation book?"

Did he turn around and say what he would have said four or eight years ago? Did he call the guy on the carpet for giving credence to liars and parasites? Did he turn around and denounce the lies in the books and defend Obama like he once did John Kerry?

No, he tried to be cute and cracked a joke while flashing a smile that indicated he secretly approved.

Now, do I think that John McCain really wants to hassle a 17 year old girl? NO. I DO NOT. I think he is better than that.

However, I also do not think, based on his winking approval/non-condemnation of anti-Michelle Obama propaganda, that he considers family completely off limits.

Now, as to other people besides McCain... Do you really honestly believe that people like Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson, let alone someone further on the fringe like John Hagee, would not have a field day with this? If so, that is incredibly naive.

I don't see how you can compare Michelle Obama and Bristol Palin. One is an adult who is on the stump with her husband and making campaign speeches. The other is 17 and has nothing, so far at least, to do with the campaign.

I understand that Sarah Palin's husband had a DUI twenty or so years ago. Is attacking him over that the same as attacking Michelle? I mean, they are both spouses of candidates. How about when the Obama camp attacked the spouse of his primary Dem opponent. Was that okay? How is that different?
