Sarah Palin

...

You are assuming that one woman can just plug in for another. I am not going to vote for one vagina just because I can't vote for another.

...

I wouldn't think you would. But the women over at hillaryclintonforum.net are voting the vagina ticket. One persons signature actually has the tagline "Women First, Country Second."

With her ultra-conservative stance against a woman's right to choose and for teaching creationism in schools I'll have to hope this won't come to pass, VM.

A shame. She's spunky.

Misguided, but spunky.

She is on the right side :D
Be right or be wrong :D

Someone had to try some humor here :p

No matter how the election turns out, Hillary's designs on the White House are over, I suspect. If Obama is elected, he'll either be there for eight years and she'll be 70 or the Republicans will win in four due to some unforseen disaster and she'll be 74 before she can try again.

If McCain wins, he'll either be in the White House for eight years followed by Palin who is much the younger woman. The Clinton era, like the Bush dynasty, is over.

And for that I am very grateful.

Now, who to vote for is the question . . .

Interesting thought. Have you read Terry Pratchett's Pyramids where the sexy little handmaiden ends up as pharaoh and starts to kick serious ass? Who knows what the future will bring?

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii177/1volupturary_manque/innocent.gif

With what she's publically stood for on an awful lot of issues, I don't want her kicking ass and creating a lot of change.

And as for a hunter and former fisherwoman and uncharacteristic wants for oil from the North Slope instead of worrying about the polar bears and the environment ... wonder if that has anything to do with the "First Dude" being a major line manager for BP in Prudhoe Bay???

And we thought we had problems because Bush and Chaney were in bed with the oil companies ... guess this puts a whole new spin on that

there are 16 posts on one thread over there, and half of those are from repeat posters, of which three are Republicans making that vagina assumption.

I am looking forward to hearing Hillary campaign against this woman.

On other threads it's clear that quite a few Hillary supporters, on that site, are jumping ship to vote for a woman, which is their main agenda. But there is a weird mix there.

Me too. :)

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:
• She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
• Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
• She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
• Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
• She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
• She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
• How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family.

We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska. —Christine B., Denali Park, AK

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage, AK

She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. —Marina L., Juneau, AK

I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting "A Woman" in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AK

So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.

In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy. And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.

In the next few days, many Americans will be wondering what McCain's vice-presidential choice means. Please pass this information along to your friends and family.

Thanks for all you do.

Whoof! Those people are angry, hard-line, doctrinaire absolutists for whom any variation from doctrinal orthodoxy is grounds for - something really bad. Granted, this woman varies, er, more than a little from their orthodoxy, but you'd think they would give her some credit for being a genuine reformer. No-sirree-bob! Off with her head!

Very enlightening. Thanks, Stella.

She's making the evangelicals very happy. I think that's 'nuff said. If you're cheering for her, you're cheering for someone who, if she ever did get into the big chair, would very likely be in favor of more discrimination against gays (as hinted at in her support of Pat Buchanan), likely wants to maintain abstinence as the only sex ed in school, will undoubtedly ignore science for religion (favors creationism)....

And likely favoring any laws (or lawmakers and supreme court judges who will support laws and legal presidents) to curtail or do away with godless, perverted sites like this. I'm agog and amazed all of you crowing and delighting in her nomination. Especially any of you who bitch and moan about how uptight people are about nudity and sex. You're on a porn sight, for heaven's sake! This woman is favored by evangelicals!

Admire her as a person all you like; argue that she might be wonderful to go out fishing with and have a beer with or talk about PTA meetings with...but do you really, honestly, want someone that close to being in the White House who will very likely lean against gay rights, against science, against sex ed, against what most of you here argue to hold dear? Honestly?

I think what you call "doctrinal orthodoxy" is mostly common sense, myself. I already know we disagree on these issues, so your reaction is about what I expected.

I thought DG Hear's post was pretty enlightening;

I like this Palin woman. Not because she's a rep but because she speaks her mind. She belives in creationism. Good, so do I. She isn't forcing it on the schools, she's speaking her opinion. Piss on the separation of church and state. The people who always bring it up don't seem to give a rats ass anyway. How many of them were force to hear religon in school?

She believes in the bible and Obama says he doesn't know what to belive in the bible. Does that make him a better person or choice than her? Not in my book it doesn't.

She wants the polar bear off the endangered species list. So What. Hell I didn't know it was even on it. A lot of you probably didn't either. She didn't say she had open season on killing polar bear. Where do some of you get this shit.

She says Alaska has lots of oil and natural gas and the people in Alaska are behind her. Whats the problem here?

She isn't pro choice. Ok, what did she say that would affect you? If she said she was pro choice instead of pro life would she be your chose? Probably not, you would just look for something else negative about her.

Her son joined the Military and she has a child with downs syndrome. Does either of those make her a negative canidate in your eyes? It makes me respect her all the more.

I don't expect this post to change any opinions. I wonder how many of us can face the scrutiny you want to put her through and come out looking as good.

That's all I have to say. I will now go back to my humor thread.
With respect

There speaks McCain's target audience-- in his own words, leaps of logic and all.

She's said to have foreign policy experience because Alaska is close to Russia.

To active voice your passive statement, Steve Doocy said that. Doocy was brilliant as a "fluff humor" reporter on Channel 4 back in the 80s. As a political commentator he's a freakin' moron (even if you're a conservative you gotta agree).

Did Obama really say that "he doesn't know what to believe in the Bible," or is DG just saying that because it sounds clever and makes an instant, just-add-water counterpoint to Palin's believing in the Bible?

Cuz you know, I wanna get on this logic train that's coming through town. ;)

Doubt is a sin. *nods*

With a majority ( possibly super majority ) of Democrats in both houses of congress, none of that really matters. Not a single one of those postulated wedge issues ( or many others ) will go anywhere.

Unless they continue to earn single digit approval ratings up to the midterms.

On the other hand, it's like handing Obama a blank check. I realize many here find that a dream come true, but no thank you for my part :p

Doubt is a sin. *nods*

No, doubt is a theological necessity for the thinking believer. Even Martin Luther had doubts at times, to the end of his life.

You'd think that Obama's not knowing what to believe in the Bible would be a major issue, given the whole commitment to God and country in its service and all. Methinks the Pubs missed their chance to take him down early in the game. ;)

??

I presume she's there to capture the conservative and the disaffected Hillary votes. Will they care about her policy opinions however strange they might be?

Stella, Sarah and Angeline have all responded very firmly to my question (note not an assertion) and that response would seem to indicate that the effect of Palin is at least as much negative as positive. Personally I cannot see why McCain took the risk. He got Obama off the front page for 24 hours but is there any substance in Palin which will bring in actual votes. All McCain has succeeded in doing is :-

1 Polarising the electorate - not necessarily a good thing.

2 He runs the risk of her committing a major gaffe, the chances of which must be pretty high. Biden has been described as prone to this type of thing but given the discipline of the Obama campaign so far the chances of Palin screwing up seem much higher.

3 If she screws up even slightly the issue will be rapidly morphed into McCains lack of judgement rather than her error.

I repeat, I can't see why McCain took the risk. Debates could be interesting.

And neither can anyone else that I know, con or lib.

That ol' maverick, you never know what he's gonna do next! Kind of a terrifying thought, IMO.

I repeat, I can't see why McCain took the risk. Debates could be interesting.

I think McCain took the risk because he knows a majority of the American voters are superficial and uninformed. They'll see the pretty face of a woman and make up their minds based on that image alone.

Ever since the announcement I've been depressed, watching OB's presidential run spiraling down the drain. McCain is a shrewd guy. You've got to give him credit for that, even if he doesn't know the difference between the Georgia near Russia and the one in the US.

Good point. I'm sorry to say that I believe that a lot of Obama's support came because he's a very handsome man with a really knockout wife. It got Kennedy elected . . .

Here's what you guys really don't get - and frankly it's a bit amusing to see you looking everywhere but at it: Genuine limited-government reformers are really popular in this center-right nation, and most people don't care very much about all the hot button issues that 90 percent of this thread is about - they have opinions about them, but their salience is much lower than the limited government reform/process-oriented things. This suggests that Obama and the Dems are going to have a really hard time with Palin. Incidentally, the GOP establishment has a really hard time with this brand of limited government reformer as well, and for similar reasons. All that is what makes this an inspired choice, assuming there's no unrevealed skeletons in the closet.
