Sarah Palin

I have to wonder: How many trips have male Governors taken their children on without anyone auditing the books? What about Chelsea Clinton? Or the Bush twins?

I understand she is running on a "reformer" credential and that makes this relevant. And certainly I have never had a job that would have paid for me to take my kids on a business trip.

Still, with all the other things that are wrong with this candidate, this particular issue does not seem worthy of as much attention, IMHO.

I have to wonder why this is being mentioned at all. Everything is being paid for out of campaign funds, because the appearance of the candidates and their spouses and children are part of the campaign. I'm aware there are laws limiting what can be done with campaign funds, but the RNC apparently thinks this is within those lawS. Obama is campaigning with his wife and childen too. Does anybody make any mention even of that expense?

I don't know, Box, what do you think?

I have been saying all along that more mud will be slung at the McCain/Palin ticket than at the Obama/Biden ticket, and this seems to be another example. The waffle mix caricature was legit political commentary, although most people here claimed it ras racist. I have my doubts about this one, especially since they chose a picture of her sneering.

Yes, you keep saying that. I have yet to see real proof.

Honestly, I think this one's pretty innocent. How offensive can Legos be? :) And it's not a sneer. It's a wink. ;)

The waffle box was most definitely racist.

She's not sneering, she's winking. It's folksy.

If you really believe that more mud has been slung at McCain than Obama, read this article and consider the type of mud that your side is slinging. Is this something you can condone and does it rise to the level of a Lego caricature...?

First of all, she's not "sneering," she's winking.

Second, its fucking LEGOS. They're not bad or good, they just are. Deal.

Third, "mud-slinging" is by definition when one campaign "slings mud" at the other. This has nothing to do with either campaign. And if you really want to go there, we can. I can compile a list of the lies your St. Sarah has told a mile long in about three minutes.

Oh pleezzee (once again)

The Obama campaign would really have to go into overdrive for these last two weeks to come anywhere close to what the McCain campaign has already done.

Well, I know it's been a long day, and I just got home (I hate those - leave in the darkness in the morning and return in the darkness evening kind of days) but I keep staring at those two pics and you know?

I can't tell which one is which.

I mean, they're exact down to the little flag pin!

Which one is more folksy?

I agree concerning travel, and if you read Bel's post, you should have gotten that he also thinks its not an issue.

The incredible excess for her clothes, however, is another story. The RNC has spent an enormous amount of money at places like Bloomingdale's, Neiman-Marcus, etc. while Gov. Palin stands there and tells us she is just a hockey mom.

McCain is the one who took issue with the way campaign funds are spent, and he lead the way to tighten the restrictions. Now his campaign turns around and spends those funds on over-priced designer clothes? Would you honestly think any less of her if she was standing there in a $300 suit as opposed to a $2000 suit?

At a time when our economy is tanking, and McCain is pounding others for excessive spending, doesn't this kind of behavior smack of hypocrisy? If you are campaigning on your ability to reign in government spending, you need to be an example.

OBTW, an examination of the DNC and Obama campaign spending showed no such charges.

Just so we are all on the same page here.

The issue about Palin expensing travel and room and board for her children is NOT about the campaign. She did it on her expense reports as Gov. of Alaska.

The children being on the campaign trail is, IMHO, a legitimate expense. Voters want to see the whole family together... seeing the whole family together helps you get votes... the point of a campaign is to get votes... therefore the expense is legit.

I still think that, while interesting and something I would consider in my overall evaluation, the issues about the kids travel expenses on the Alaska books is not nearly as important to me as other things about her.

I'm can't really get my bowels in an uproar about Sarah Palin's wardrobe--it's a drop in the bucket compared to some of the stunts the GOP has pulled, and she shouldn't look like a poor relation next to Cindy McCain, even if Cindy does have beaucoup bucks of her own.

At the same time, you wonder whatever happened to the good old respectable Republican cloth coat?

I wasn't aware that Legos held any particularly noxious connotation comparable to those of the Aunt Jemima images.
Legos are Danish. And according to some dead guy, there's something rotten in the state of Denmark.

See? Clearly mud-slinging.

Obama and Biden and their wives are rich and aleady well-outfitted. The Palin family and Levi Johnston are not that rich. There are four adults, two girls and the baby to take care of. I do think it is excessive but nothing to get into an uproar about.

As for the children on the expense account, I will believe that when I see some proof. And, I don't mean the opinion of somebody in the Huffington Post or the NY Times. Pesumably, the baby is being breast-fed. It seems logical that his mother would want to keep him with her for that, if nothing else.

If the othe children ae thee too, isn't that between and the state of Alaska?
