Sarah Palin

Naw, South Africa is only referred to as the nation. Nothing like talking about "south Florida." So, it's fairly obvious she didn't know there was a nation by that name.

I'll admit I don't know what nations are in NAFTA myself (although I think I could make a correct stab at it--based on the NA referring to North America). Not my area of expertise and I was off immersed in the Middle East when all of that was happening. I'm still a little mystified by what the issues are with that--and not particularly motivated to find out.

But then I'm not running for the vice presidency either.

Actually, there isn't. The proper name is The Republic of South Africa.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa

Perhaps she knows it by that name, rather than the shortened one.

I still refuse to believe that a college graduate, the governor of a state and a former journalist, even a sportscaster, would not know which nations are signatories of NAFTA and that Africa is a continent. I suspect they were either outright lying, to protect their own asses or they were speaking in hyperbole, such as when somebody said Gerald Ford was too dumb to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Well, we do know for a fact that she didn't know who the Prime Minister of Canada was and didn't know that Quebec didn't have a Prime Minister, which seems like a pretty egregious oversight for the governor of Alaska, who shares a border with the country.

Actually what isn't? "South Africa" is the "proper" shortened name--and the one used in conversation.

Has anyone rebuffed the assertion of her knowledge shortcomings? They don't surprise me at all. She comes from a dim backwater corner, we constantly hear of examples of what people don't know, she's a beauty queen recently emerged from a small frontier town who had to take four goes at trying to get out of marginal colleges--and we all got a treat look into her current events reading habits (all those "gosh I don't know any of the names of the papers" newspapers she devours daily).

And, as Dr. M. notes, she seems to know squat even about the country looming over that state she's a governor of. (And can Russia be seen from her front porch or her back porch--or is that just Stella's Bar and Grill?)

So refuse all you want. Who cares if you do?

So, Wikipedia is your research tool of chose, eh?

Box, as usual you are missing the forest because the wooden upright things with branches and leaves and twigs keep obstructing your view.

It's not so much whether she knew country from continent; doesn't it disturb you that the very same people who were telling us last week how qualified she is for the Presidency are now painting her as a second-rate candidate for Student Council? Material from anonymous campaign insiders has been reported on Fox News, the NYT, and Newsweek. You can hardly claim that all of those sources are biased in the same way.

Palin wasn't "thrust" into the spotlight. She lobbied for the position of veep nominee. She also, according to these "McCain campaign insiders" who've been talking to Fox Noise, refused to have a practice session in preparation for her disastrous interview with Katie Couric.

That's not just being uninformed; it's being willfully ignorant - and unpardonably cynical in her belief that Joe Six-Pack wouldn't care what she knew or didn't know. Of course, she had reason to hope that ideology and personality would trump knowledge: witness the non-reaction by conservatives in 2000 when GWB accused Gore of wanting "to treat Social Security like some kind of federal program."

Just wanted to pop in to say that right there, that's a great line. :D

Which is what W did eventually. ;)

Interesting urge. Watch your balls, though.

In any case, Sarah Palin was the dealbreaker that cost McCain my vote, so I know for a fact that at least with me, she did hurt him. Whatever the pundit might say.

Severus, I believe that she really was the dealbreaker for a lot of people. McCain you can have respect for for a number of reasons as you choose, but there's just not anything I've yet found that suggests there's anything remotely admirable about SP. She's dim, she's a Christian fascist, she doesn't speak well, she's ignorant, and, according to the Republican party leaders in Anchorage, she's never failed to bite a hand that fed her. As much as it may be fun to insult the intelligence of Republicans based on their last two electoral choices, the fact remains that most of them are looking for something material in a candidate just like Democrats and everyone else... and Sarah Palin doesn't cut it.

I think that if Joe Lieberman had become VP with McCain (like McCain wanted) that they would've stood a good chance of winning. Sure, they'd have taken flak for being "The Old Farts Ticket" but Joe Lieberman is a pretty good speaker and he's a smart guy, too. I think it would've stood a much better chance the McCain-Palin.

She was relief for me. I wasn't wild about Obama or disturbed all that much about McCain (even though it was a given I was not voting for a Republican in this election just as a protest) until Sarah Palin went on the ticket. Then I felt no conflict or guilt about being against the McCain ticket.

The lady is fighting back.

And I think that's a good thing. It's too easy for the news media to turn their bully pulpit into another kind of bully pulpit. :( Although she is famous, she has little more of an opportunity to defend herself against her critics in the news media than any of us would have, unless somebody is decent enough to offer her one. :(

No, Sky, Wiki is not my first choice of research but it is easy to use, because it is one of the first to appear while googling and, when I am looking for a simple fact. a matte of public knowledge, it is usually right. I would be reluctant to use it for anything really complicated.

"I never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr. Pepper once in a while,"

This may well be true. After all, she didn't ASK for all that money she spent on clothing for her entire fucking family - she just spent it without asking, and is now facing an audit from the Republican party.

But Box, her critics aren't the news media. The media reported criticism of her that came from sources inside the McCain campaign!

Of course it disturbs me. If you look at my post, I am not saying anything good about the backstabbers. "They" are neither John McCain nor Barack Obama, both of whom would have too much class to make up stories like that.

The Times and Newsweek will print it with great alacrity because it says something bad about somebody they dislike, almost as much as most of the posters on this thread dislike her. Fox News will report it, although they may not like it, because the accusations are news.

Tilt. In this case she's fighting back at McCain staffers (and their bully pulpit), not the press. The press (including *giggle* Fox) is just running between the two and holding their microphones out.

I'm waiting for the big shoe to fall--a claim (whether or not true) by McCain staffers that she wasn't, in fact, forthcoming in the vetting process on the extent/substance of the abuse of power investigation against her or her daughter's pregnancy.

And perhaps the pigs in Alaska fly. You're back to your crazy rationalizations again, Box. It actually isn't as big a deal as you are making it. And you are just helping to make her appear worse.

For once, I actually agree with you.

And I feel dirty at the thought.

Must be the knee-jerk doctrinaire aspect of you. Me, I take each issue separately.

Lighten up. It's the same as my deadpan comments about expecting the Apocalypse on those rare occasions when I agree with Commies like Svenskaflicka or DeeZire. I inherited my uncle's dry sense of humor.

Plus my agent provocateur mode is a sly revenge on everyone who forgot my birthday.

Sorry, that "just kidding" dog don't bark.

But as I've only posted in response to your inanities, when they go away, I have no inclination to post to you.

Seriously, you need to relax. I'm being provocative, not trying to give you a coronary.

Well, I'm being a little vindictive, but can you blame me? You're one of those who most deserved some irritation, due to how you have behaved.

Yeah, right.

Was your uncle Joe McCarthy?

Yeah, right.

Sour grapes? Oh, well. Not my fault that I can and do drive motorcades through the holes in your arguments.

Choose to believe whatever helps you sleep at night.

I'll leave you alone for a while, so as not to subject others to your absurd homilies and our tiresome arguments.
