Professor X had just finished talking to Emma Frost, on the telephone (a long-standing joke between the two most powerful telepaths on the planet), when one of his students burst in, out of breath.
"Professer! I did something bad!"
"Calm down, Brad... take it easy, and tell me exactly what happened."
The serene, confident manner of Xavier's, plus a soothing telepathic signal, quickly had Fallout's anxiety under control, allowing him to explain what had happened.
"I see that anger managment is going to be high on our list of priorities for you, son." Xavier tapped out a request for information on his computer, which came back negative. "Fortunately, no one seems to have been injured as a result of your blackout. I'm not going to impose any punishment, Brad, because I expect all my students to behave responsibly of their own accord. I will, however, ask that you not go to town alone until you learn to keep your reactions under control. I can help you with that, don't worry. Compared to what I went through with Logan, may he rest in peace, your rages really aren't so awful. Why don't you check out the pool, or something? I believe that several of the other students have been 'checking out' the exercise areas."
I know so little about my powers, im just acheing to learn what they do. Ms Frost said she can teach me but I wonder what classes will be like. I was about to check in when I hear noises from down the hall I walk over and see a few of the boys playing around the water. And me without a swimsuit ,so far I havent even seen any other woman. I think I'll watch these guys to see what there all about.
Emma, being the world's worst snoop when it came to eavesdropping on minds in her area, had noticed Rachel's discomfort. Closing her eyes, she projected her mental voice to the shy young student, "Rachel, come to my office, please..."
Once Rachel had arrived, Emma warmly smiled at her, and spoke, "Rachel, please, have a seat. No, you haven't done anything wrong." She paused to light a cigarette in its long holder, blew out a plume of white smoke, then continued, "I've noticed that you didn't come with much by way of luggage, Rachel. Perhaps you didn't realize it, but your education here is a full scholarship. How would you like to go into town with me, and go shopping? We could probably convince some of the other girls to go, too, and leave the boys behind to get into whatever mischief they mistakenly think they can get in to while I'm away." She laughed, and waited for Rachel's reaction.
Rachel's eyes lit up. "Shopping?? Full scholarship???" Rachels eyes were aglow in dreams of the future. Suddenly her eyes narrowed as she rembred her harsh past "wait a minute...whats the catch"
Rachel caught a glimpse of pain in Emma's eyes, as well as a flash of anger, quickly stilled. "Dear girl, there is no 'catch'... I am rather wealthy myself, and have many wealthy backers, all members of Homo Superior. As a mutant, myself, I feel it important that young mutants be trained to take their place in the new order which will come once we finally defeat the 'normal' humans. Their time of superiority is over, and, like the dinosaurs, they will become extinct. You and the other students only have to work to acheive your full potentials to repay our investment in you."
Emma paused again, stubbed out her cigarette, and stood up. "Now, ready to go shopping?"
I nodded, and smiled softly. Angel was talking gently to me, obviously worried about the panic in my eyes. I knew it was there... my Mother always said my eyes were very expressive.
And it mattered that someone cared.. It mattered alot to me.
Joseph took one look up at the rings with a grin on his face and jumped straight up, grabbing the first one. He looked over at Vincent with another grin before saying, "I was wondering if you could move because I would like to reach the other side."
He contemplated shaking the rings so that it would make Vincent fall into the pool with a splash but he didn't know what powers he had. He hung there and looked at Vincent who was moving along the rings, getting closer to the edge of the pool.
"So...." I said as I felt the strong rays of sun beaming down on both our faces, and breathed the clean fresh air of the countryside.
I could feel the same presence that I had felt next to Professor, but there was just something different.
"Where are you from? I'm Angel by the way," I said, shading my eyes from the bright sunlight, as I tilted my head to look back at her. She was very pretty indeed, but a gloom hung over her face, something that I couldn't exactly put my finger upon...
Vincent eyed Joseph dangerously, his violet eyes searching for intent. Vincent pulled himself up the ring and reached for the chain that supported it. He hoisted himself up and reclined back using his feet to hold on. "By all means Joseph ,be my guest."
It felt good to be under the water again. I hadn't dreamed I'd enjoy it so much. It was a game I used to play, "How long can I stay under?" My lungs were burning but I made myself stay under the water, oblivious to the happenings above ground.
It wasn't until I saw Vincent break the surface a few feet above me that I remembered him. If that's Vincent, who's that blob hopping from ring to ring? I broke the surface with a releived gasp, panting hard.
I watched the creature/student with amazement. Definately not normal.
"Hi, I'm Martin." I called up just as he launched himself to the next bar.
Joseph looked at Vincent with a weird and shocked look as he hung onto the chain and said, "What do you think that you are going to do.... are you going to break that chain so that I go falling into the water because if you are then I can do that for you."
With that he let pushed himself up and jumped into the air then with a turn in the air landed in the water with a small splash. As soon as he surfaced Joseph ran his fingers through his hair and then looked over at the person who was looking straight at him.
"Ummm... yes, is there anything that I can do for you or am I that weird looking because if so I would really love to know."
A small war raged inside Rachel. Between what she wanted to belive and what life and the streets had taught her. She eyed Emma suspiciosly and finaly smiled. "Alright Em I'll play along. Ive always been prepared for the worst and life never disapointed me. But if what you say is true and were gonna put an end to this then maybe I'll learn to hope for the best."
Vincent smiled showing slightly overly defined canines, his violet eyes flashed as he said "Joseph,If I were to break these chains, it would be a neat trick. especialy since I barely have the strength to sustain myself much less cast you in the water. As for trying to 'trick' you...If I was going to do something to you. You would know of it Id make sure. I dont trick I dont backstab and I dont play games. As for my power." Vincent swung from the chains until he had enough momentum to clear the pool. He jumped and hit the pavement with a sickening thud. It apeared he wasnt even breathing. When suddenly he straightened out and stood up. "Have fun guys, Ive gotta go study."
I hadn't meant to stare. I cast my eyes down to the pool. "N-Nothing. Nothing's wrong. I hadn't meant, umm... That was some amazing acrobatics up there."
I watched Vincent stand-up from a fall that would have broken at least 15 bones of mine.
"Let's not start off on the wrong foot. *Any of us.*" I look to the two of them.
This wasn't like me. I'm normally the quiet one in the back, but if we're all supposed to get along here at the academy someone's got to help soothe things over. "Now, this was some harmless pool roughhousing, we're all teammates here, right?" I look to the others for confirmation.
"Classes start tomorrow. We ought to get some sleep." I tried to have definity in my voice when I said that last one.
Joseph looked at Martin with a smile. I liked this person, he was the type of person that I could be friends with, hell everyone here was someone that I could be friends with. I moved to the edge of the pool and jumped out then squatted down and looked straight at Martin.
"Don't worry. I am not here to make any enemies. I just wanted to see what type of people I am going to be living and learning with and I like what I see but you are right, we should really get some sleep as we will probably all need it tomorrow."
He turned from the pool but before he did turned and with a grin splashed some water at Martin then turned and walked from the large room and into the hallway.
Vincent picked up his clothes and as he strode away he stopped. He dropped his clothes back on the floor and sighed. "Ive seen some of the most powerful teams with some of the most powerful beings in the world fall apart because they couldnt stand each other. Because they couldnt turn there back on each other. Because they couldnt trust each other. Or worse because they were always trying to out do each other. A team is stronger than a family. They come together by choice. and by choice they have to work it through.I have to work through my probs. Martin Im afraid of the water. I cant swim and I cant drown it makes for a very uncomfortable experience, and it brings back bad memories." As he talked he walked around the pool. Joseph Im used to expecting everybody else to back stab me, so I get ready to backstab them... but if what Ms Frost is saying is true and were the start of a new age. Then I guess I have to learn to trust."
Vincent stopped by the deep end of the pool. and in this academy the deep end would make sub mariner comfy. Vincent closed his eyes and let himself fall in.
Joseph turned quickly when he heard the splash and then saw Vincent fall into the pool. He wondered just what the hell Vincent was doing as he had just told the two of them that he couldn't swim but he had just fallen into the water. He ran over to the edge of the pool and looked at Martin then shouted out, "Come on, help me get him out of there!"
He then jumped into the pool, determined to get Vincent out of there and then ask him what the hell he was thinking.
It was like one of those slow motion scenes. Vincent just collapsed into the *really* deep, deep end. It was about 60 feet dto the bottom.
Joseph mobilized almost the second that the last droplet from Vincent's splash fell back to the pool.
God, I hated my father when I was six. He picked me up and threw me into the pool. "Either swim or drown," he told me. I was so mad at him. I learned to swim just to spite him. But Vincent couldn't drown. He said so. So he has to choose to learn to swim, or spend a long time not-dead-yet at the bottom of the pool. He wasn't trusting us to save him, he was trusting us to trust him.
"Joseph no, he has to do this." I call while he's mid-dive. I hope he heard me as I start the long swim over to the deep end. You can do this Vincent.[\i] I pray to myself wishing I had the telepathy of Director Frost to encourage him.
Joseph heard Martin's voice a second too late as he was already in the water. He then stopped swimming and looked down at Vincent who was standing there looking up at him. He knew then that he didn't need any help, he wanted to be trusted. Joseph swam to the surface and as soon as his head broke it he looked over to where Martin had just surfaced and said, "I know that he wants some trust from us but this has to be the craziest way to do it."
He swam over to where Martin was in the water and stayed there, looked down at the water and thought Come on you stubborn fool.... learn to swim quickly or I am going to go down and get you out of there, trust issues or not.
As Vincent hit the water his mucles seized. he thrashed for a second and then sank like a rock. Muscle doesnt float well and Vincent was about a bouyant as a stone. He wondered again why he thought this was a good idea. but then again he had a great swimmer in Martin and Amazing athelete in Joseph. he tried not to panic but old phobias were returning to haunt him....visons of a dark chamber, a nullification collar, and an underwater tomb. visons of life as a hound...he shivered as he fell to the bottom and curled into a ball.
I smiled softly, and clasped my hands behind my back as we walked. "Originally, from Dublin, Ireland. I moved to New York City when I was 14. Been there ever since... well.. except now of course."
"And you?"
But before she had time to answer, a sudden look of surprise came over her eyes. Immediately, I panicked. "I-I'm sorry.. If I've said something wrong, I'll leave..."
