Scream it out! Roe v. Wade edition

I really hadn’t considered how this ruling would leave me feeling so uncomfortable.
In what way?

I guess owning a uterus has made this feel pretty high stakes. How has it been as someone (I know I'm assuming here, but I'm gonna roll with it) who doesn't have one?

And, again, nobody should be the least bit surprised. Now that conservatives have forged the massive social crowbar that is the current built of SCOTUS, they are going to annihilate anything that doesn't fit their increasingly theocratic worldview.

Rights for me, but not for thee is only the beginning.
They've been openly saying this was their plan for decades.
What did people think they were voting for? 🙄

Former congressional staffer here. Don't write them, they aren't swayed. They don't even see your letters. Don't call - it's a 23 year old answering the phone who doesn't care.
SHOW UP. Seriously. Mobilize beyond writing and calling. Like I said, sign up to be an election official. Run for local office. Volunteer for local abortion funds if you don't have the money, you can at least help with admin support. There are a lot of senate elections that REALLY matter this year. Georgia. North Carolina. PA. Show up - make calls for those campaigns. Get these pieces of shit out of there.

I hear you. Great ideas, thank you.

People have to start somewhere.

Finding out what you can do is the start to finding out what needs to be done to be effective.

I can write a letter. Great. Done that. What else can I do? I look at your list and I can pick something from it. One thing. Do that. What is next? Do another. Build momentum.

Some people have no clue how to start or do any of this. A successful campaign builds on itself.

I am a chess player. Strategy is everything. You don't immediately go for the king unless your opponent is really shitty. The conservatives have a strong board right now. Smart plays are necessary.

I'm simply telling you that, as a former congressional staffer, mail takes weeks to arrive to the Capitol, if it even does. It's mailed to another location, irradiated, and then distributed. Seriously, it makes the writer feel better but accomplishes nothing. I'm truly sorry that's the state of things. Every single person who "wants to help" has a local democratic committee. Every single one. They are going to be doing voter registration drives, outreach, calls, fundraisers, postcard writing to folks in other states about their upcoming elections.
My congressional office was rare in that I did respond to mailed letters, but they were with forms in a piece of software everyone there uses. The Members almost never see the mail.
By all means, write if it makes you feel better. Hopefully my tips help someone start off in a more effective way.

That's a simple answer, it was and is an affront to the human rights of women in the USA. That bothers me, it lessens the rights of women here and I don't like it at all.

The Ruling

I like to read things directly from the source. Justice Thomas' position is sightly terrifying.
They’re coming for birth control and marriage equality next.

30% of this country will happily boost a fascist coup if it makes the libs mad.

If we don’t get convictions on the perpetrators of the insurrection, we’re over. Even if we do get convictions, best case scenario is that it takes 2+ generations to undo the damage of the past 6 years.

So, I have a legitimate question about the birth control part of this. Obviously, you don't necessarily know the answer to this. So maybe it's a thoughts question. We have so many drugs on the market that have been made for one cause, but eventually were used for other things. We also have many drugs that cost a shit ton to purchase as one, but cost less if you take 2 different meds and market it as something else.

So, if they do come after birth control. Do we think (collective we) that they will keep some of it around for other causes/reasons. Like Acne? I used to take it simply for the fact that it kept my Ovarian cysts from flaring up so much. My daughter took it for the Acne side of it. I also took it because it regulated my periods vs going months at a time without one.

This. Anything LGBTQ as well. If you're a fan of gay marriage (or, you know, a married gay person) I would probably start your grieving process now. Because yeah, Hurricane Clarence is headed your way. And there is not one thing you can do about it.

I was thinking about it, and I wouldn't be surprised to see lawsuits targeting things like family leave, employers being required to cover pregnancy care and the like. Mechanisms that keep workplaces from discriminating against pregnant women or women who might become pregnant. Give SCOTUS a shot to rule them unconstitutional.

This is a long, dark road ahead.

I'll be back to meaningfully address this. Others are welcome to in the meantime, but I do want you to get a good answer because it's a great question

No. They won’t.

Hobby Lobby won their case in front of this same SCOTUS allowing them to deny covering any birth control as part of their employees health care coverage. There’s no exclusion or appeal built in where you can explain that you aren’t taking it for that purpose.

I’m infertile, due to debilitating endometriosis. I have an IUD to treat the endometriosis, even though I don’t need birth control. My prescribed treatment for endometriosis won’t be excluded.
