The tax bill's major purpose, besides enriching the Gups' corporate owners, is to cause massive deficits that can only be 'cured' by killing Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, all health programs, the whole safety net, as well as most individual legal rights and protections.
Return to 1900, when robber barons still ruled, 10% of American urban women survived as prostitutes, a large proportion of workers were killed or maimed on the job annually, and races were segregated. Read Otto Bettmann's THE GOOD OLD DAYS - THEY WERE AWFUL! for a taste of the Gups' American dream.
This is potentially more true than we might think. One thing I haven't seen mentioned in relation to this is the issue of Globalization...specifically, corporate globalization. I fear that many still believe that most all US citizens must be patriots. Sadly, country and citizenship have to take a back seat to corporate profit and survival - (We've even seen it in Trump's inner circle). As we all know, it is a global market being wooed now. It matters little, or nothing, if a USA based corporation "has" to make decisions that may actually harm the USA and it's citizens.
Thus, your point about the "Good Old Days" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is a good one. But, that's only true if we roll over and accept it. I believe there is still time to reverse course, IF a majority of citizens will believe the urgency of the potential collapse of this society.

This comes to mind for some reason;
Bob Dylan- It's A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall (vs-#5)
Well, I'm goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breath it
And reflect it from the mountains so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a gonna fall
