(Just woke up, so forgive me if this is only semi-coherent)
I *do* believe in soul mates. I believe there are different kinds of soul mates. (i.e., the person that spoke of her "life mate" and her "soul mate" or the person that spoke of certain friends, family members, etc.)
I'm also a reincarnationist, and given the fact that I believe in several lives, I find it very difficult to believe that, in all of that time, I've only met one "The One" that I'm destined to be with over and over.
To me, a soul mate is someone who you've "traveled with" before. It's someone your soul recognizes before you consciously do. On the basest level, it's merely vibration. Romantic love is separate, IMO, from soul mate issues, i.e. you can have a soul mate you're not in love with, and you can be in love with someone who's not your soul mate.
I've been fortunate enough to meet three of mine so far, two "heart friends" and one lover.
For those that the idea of fate raises hackles, I had a tough time with that until I realized that fate really is nonlinear. It's a series of forks. Fate is made of crossroads, not fixed incidents.
In my opinion: You are destined to meet your soul mate(s); now, whether you choose to remain (in whatever fashion) with that soul mate is your choice. Your choice, or theirs, in no way diminishes the fact of who they are.
It's just not a guarantee of "happily ever after."
But it is a guarantee that they'll enrich your life.
