South Florida

At our *MIAMI SEAQUARIUM*

Pinnipeds

Well adapted to life on both land and sea

There are over 30 species of pinnipeds including seals, sea lions, and walruses. Thriving in both populated and unpopulated regions of the world, these “feather footed” marine mammals are well adapted to life on both land and sea.

Size and Weight: Pinnipeds come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The smallest pinniped, the ringed seal, rarely exceeds 5 feet in length and 150s pound in weight. Walruses can grow to be up to 12 feet in length and weigh up to 4000 pounds. The northern elephant seal, however, is the largest member of the pinniped family. Males can reach a length of 21 feet and a weight of 7,780 pounds!

Distribution: Found throughout the world, pinnipeds have adapted well to life both in and out of water. Time spent on land and ice consists of mating, resting, and molting. Known as the world’s best divers, pinnipeds will dive to great depths while hunting and playing. Some pinnipeds hold their breath for up to 43 minutes while diving. By slowing their heartbeat and reducing blood flow, they can drop their oxygen use by one-third. The northern elephant seal can dive to depths of almost 1,000 feet and stay submerged for more than 40 minutes.

Coloration: Depending on the species, pinnipeds can range in color from grey, brown, tan, white, and black. Assorted color patterns include: rings, spots, and solid tones.

Diet: All members of the pinniped family are carnivorous. Their diet ranges from krill, fish, and crustaceans to sea birds and other pinnipeds. The walrus can eat up to 6,000 clams in one feeding.

Predators: Pinniped predators include marine mammals such as killer whales and polar bears, as well as several shark species. Although now regulated, pinnipeds continue to be a source of food and wealth for humans.

Social Behavior: Pinnipeds are highly social animals. They use a wide range of techniques to identify and communicate with one another. Smell, hearing, and touch play a large role in pinniped communication. Large groups of pinnipeds will live together in a small land area. The Galapagos Islands population of Californian sea lions is estimated to be as high as 50,000 individuals. Within these larger groups, male pinnipeds will create a harem of females with which he will mate. The male sea lion will guard this group of females from any other males that might encroach on his territory.

South Florida Manatee

Birth and Care of Young

A. Gestation.

Manatee gestation is about 12 months.
B. Birth seasons.

1. Manatees in Florida apparently breed year-round; however, most calves seem to be born during spring and summer.

2. Most Amazonian manatees are born between February and May.

3. West African manatees breed year-round.
C. Frequency of birth.

1. A cow gives birth about once every three years. The calf can be born either head- or tail-first.

2. Births of twins may occur, but are rare.
D. Size at birth.

1. A West Indian manatee calf measures about 4 to 4.5 ft. (1.2-1.4 m) and weighs approximately 60 to 70 lb. (27-32 kg).

2. An Amazonian manatee calf measures about 30 in. (80 cm).
E. Care of young.

1. The newborn calf is capable of swimming to the surface on its own.

2. Calves vocalize at or soon after birth. This is an important part of the mother-calf bonding process.

3. The calf begins to nurse within a few hours after birth by suckling from a teat under the pectoral flippers. Calves nurse underwater.

4. Calves begin nibbling on plants within a few weeks of birth.

5. Although it may be weaned by the end of its first year, the calf remains close to its mother for up to two years. The calf is dependent on its mother not only for nutrition, but also for learning about feeding and resting areas, travel routes, and warm-water refuges.
