Elinor couldn't sleep, she twisted and turned in her sheets and finally gave up, pulling Nicholas' manuscript out and reading it. After an hour or so, she could hear muttering. Putting the novel down, she got out of bed, pulling a shawl around her shoulders and moving to her bedroom door. The muttering faded, and she walked instead to the bathroom. It got louder. She opened the door just as she heard yelling that almost made her heart stop.
"CEASE FIRE! GOD, STOP! STOP!"
She bolted, flinging the door open wide and catching her thigh on the lock, tearing her nightdress and her skin open but she barely even felt it. She hurried to his door, pulling it open, switching on the bedside light and climbing onto the bed as he thrashed violently. Her hands gripped his arms, he was strong and so obviously terrified. She held him, almost lying on him but a little to his side, putting her arms around his neck and holding him tightly.
"Ssshh, sshhh, you're safe Nicholas, you're safe... It's just a bad dream," she whispered against his ear, smoothing his hair as she soothed him. "I'm here, I'm here... It's alright, please..."
Elinor lay alongside him, holding his face in her hands, her eyes pleading as he started to come around, wakening slightly. He looked frightened, embarrassed almost.
"Don't be afraid, I won't ever let anything harm you..." Her eyes searched his face and she kissed him. His cheeks were damp from tears and she could taste the salt on his lips. Their foreheads rested together. "I promise."
