The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

Today was an easier work day.

I had the whole dental thing this morning at 8 and the procedure took just under an hour.

Then from 8-11 I had meetings and it went well with my mouth and all.

Then I had lunch w my daughter. She and her bf just broke up and she is hurting. But she made a really mature decision to end it. Also good to catch up w her.

Then back to work from 130-4, and then I cut out a bit early. I been bustin my ass so I have no qualms about calling it a day an hour early!

I often wonder after the stores have been pillaged before a storm how much of the food is thrown away.
I have a little extra milk. I run out of fresh veggies starting Wednesday. But will easily survive on the leftover ham and soup. Lots of proteins in the freezer too. It takes a while for potatoes to go bad. Pasta stores well.
As a lifelong resident of a Hurricane Zone we’ve been mini-preppers since I can remember. I’m not doomsday level, but I could be nudged! 🤣

Let’s start an Emergency Prep List. Everyone chime in. I’m sure even the most seasoned will learn a trick or two.

1. Food. I stock up on Rice and canned goods and also a little of the expensive camping chow they sell at Sportsman’s Warehouse and Dicks and the like. I figure we’ll eat the good camping grub the first couple nights the power goes out or any leftovers then save the Rice&beans for the apocalypse.

2. Gas. Non-Ethanol for the generator. Sounds like some of y’all are chopp’n wood for wood fired.

3. Plenty of extension cords for the Gen. Long and the big gage type. Don’t forget a multi-plug to plug lots of goodies. I run the Fridge, coffee maker, X-box and TeeVee off one. I also have a small window unit AC unit (still in the box from 5 yrs ago) that I could run but I need to get the buddy i2200 Honda to push all that.

4. A siphon. I have a hand powered crank with a filter on the end. I technically could dip it into my gas tank and have close to 20 gallons of extra gas out of one of the cars.

5. Water purifier. Big deal for Hurricane season but not so much a snow…but it’s an idea. I have the hand held straw type…I would suggest something easier but still charcoal based.

6. Duct Tape or for you military types, 100 mile an hour tape🤣

7. That’s the basics…

Feel free to add to the list. Mine is very regional centric so feel free to add the heavy snow area prep, especially in light of the looming Snowmageddon.

For every day travel, I keep a hat, gloves and one of those shiny heat blankets in my car. And of course jumper cables.

Crank flashlights and a crank radio is a must. I have never used it but I’d rather have it and not need it.

Hell yes!

Oh, and about 75,000 rounds of ammunition. 😂

There are a lot of schools of thought around this. But a shotgun is always a good one. Good for both security but also for hunting applications.

A high-quality 22 caliber rifle is also very helpful. I think a few people here have Marlin 60s but I have a really nice Ruger 1022 that I am fond of.

Last time I was ice skating, the rink lifeguard said he had never seen anyone hit their head as hard as I did and still be awake.
Yikes! No bueno
They put strips of breaded fried eggplant on top of the pizza: it’s yummy.
I've had breaded, fried eggplant strips (aka fries) with grated parm on top and a side of marinara... but never had it on a pizza.
Then I had lunch w my daughter. She and her bf just broke up and she is hurting. But she made a really mature decision to end it. Also good to catch up w her.
🫂 Even when it's the right choice, it hurts. Glad she has her dad to help her through.

Shocker: I'm a fan of lists... and being prepared.

That said, I have limited resources at my disposal. Still - I have two 20# bags of Pandemic Rice taking up space. It could last longer than I do... but what's a SWF gonna do with 40 effing pounds of long grain rice I ask you? Think I need to find me a soup kitchen.

Little weird and unsolicited side note I HATE rice..

I ate so many MRE’s during my time in, I swore that would be the last resort! I could probably get some from our local Army/Navy store but I wonder if I could get it cheaper than the buckets of chow I get from the camping place?

This is the brand we use and stock up on…

IMG_3692 Small.jpeg

Highly rated and tasty. The price has almost doubled since I bought the first bucket 5 or 6 yrs ago. We go back and just buy the packets we really like. A typical bucket has 4 breakfast and 4 suppers. I top it off after a camping trip. Don’t think i’ve ever had to dip into it for emergency purposes, but it’s peace of mind.

Thank you for your Service..

I was an Instructor with the local Sea Cadet Corps a long time ago..

I did the same. When the covid fever hit (and I mean the scare before the actual pandemic) I thought, might be time to stock up on some food.

I nabbed a couple of buckets of the Mountain House, actually bought a 25 day food tub off a “prepper site,” and then just went to Lowe’s and got a Tupperware type tub and filled it with 25lb bags of rice and canned goods. I figured I had a solid month of packaged and canned food that could feed a family of four then.

Some things to think about. All that sounds good…till you realize you’ll be eating canned food and rice for days on end. That will get old fast. So think of things you can mix up. Also, don’t forget treats like some dark chocolate and maybe nuts and dried fruits.

I use the Lowe’s bin to rotate stuff in and out. So we’ll use the camping stuff just because we go, but it’s got a 30 yr shelf life. Bagged rice can be shelved up to 25 yrs. So it’s not imperative you roll those. But canned goods…up for debate, but I do rotate those and any perishables.

Speaking off…need to go check some dates…

It was my pleasure for sure!

Yeah, I can imagine a box of MRE’s would go for a pretty penny. The camping bucket was fairly affordable at one time but as word spread on how good they were, they’ve jacked up the price.

I swore to myself that I would never eat another MRE if I can help it.

I have a few in a go bag if necessary. The hope is to never need it

Ok so I was on my weather site checking the temps and Im now under two weather alerts.. The cold one I posted earlier and this one now..

Snow is likely beginning on Sunday. What:Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm. Locally higher amounts are possible.Reduced visibility in heavy snow and local blowing snow. When:Sunday morning or afternoon and ending Monday morning.Additional information:An organized weather system will bring snow across the area beginning on Sunday morning or afternoon and ending Monday morning. Lake enhancement may occur in some areas which could lead to higher snowfall amounts. There is uncertainty in the snowfall amounts, as small shifts in the track of the system could significantly impact storm totals.

Snow fall amounts in this storm is a little confusing. At least in this area.

In the greater PA, DE, NJ, NY area there is talk of anywhere of 5-14 inches of snow. Then there is the talk of ice or mixing in this storm.

Now it is quite possible that Sunday an area could get 14 inches of snow. But when the storm is over, someone could go out and measure 8 inches and think that this storm was overhyped. But the ice/rain/mix compacted the 14 inches down to 8. It happens.

Don’t be confused with this storm. If you are getting reports of low end snow after the storm and you had some ice/rain/mixing its compacted. You probably had more snow.

Those are good points.. One of the plus sides to the dangerous cold Im experiencing is there will be no Ice / Rain mixed in..

So, here’s the topic of the evening.

Expiration dates on canned goods. If it says “Sell by” or “Eat by” 1/24/26, does it drop dead on 1/25? I tend to think you got about a five yr grace period possibly. Depending on the food. As long as the cans haven’t been subjected to high heat, like say a garage.

Just went and checked and sure enough, my rotation bin has cans of beans and lentils with a Sell By date of 2020-22.

Any good insight? Resident Nurses? Resident Scientists? Shithouse scientists like myself? 🤣

****Edit****

So I dug a tad, and my hunch was basically right (5 yr window food dependent). Food Bank of the Rockies. Basically something like beans should be good indefinitely if stored properly.

As long as the can isnt dented or bulging..

Eat by is the most serious label and should be thrown out after the date
Sell by usually means it’s good for a week or two afterward.
Best before date means it’s good before but might taste a bit weird after that date, but still ok to eat.
