The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

Which printer?

I'm maybe looking for an upgrade. The ender 5 plus seems dated now.
Anycubic Kobra S1 with the 4 filament multiplexer. Right now on sale for like... 450. It has a lot of parts thst look like bambu internals, but a more open hardware. It can hit 600 mm/s print speeds, and I ran it 400 hours in like 2 weeks and held up. The ai print failed detection is not quite ready for prime time, but good machine.

Hows your weather now? Are you home?

So, here’s the topic of the evening.

Expiration dates on canned goods. If it says “Sell by” or “Eat by” 1/24/26, does it drop dead on 1/25? I tend to think you got about a five yr grace period possibly. Depending on the food. As long as the cans haven’t been subjected to high heat, like say a garage.

Just went and checked and sure enough, my rotation bin has cans of beans and lentils with a Sell By date of 2020-22.

Any good insight? Resident Nurses? Resident Scientists? Shithouse scientists like myself? 🤣

****Edit****

So I dug a tad, and my hunch was basically right (5 yr window food dependent). Food Bank of the Rockies. Basically something like beans should be good indefinitely if stored properly.
Sell by is usually the recommended date that the ‘company’ wants you to sell it, take it off the shelf and not sell it because they don’t want bad reviews on social media. It is usually fine for months after but drops off on canned goods after a year beyond the Sell By. Things that contain cooked canned goods like creamed corn or Chef Boyardee is good beyond the sell by date but flavor and color might drop off.

Eat by date…. On canned goods, I would not eat more that 6-8 months after. But that is just me. Canned chicken, shrimp, salmon.

There are a lot of items that are canned in water, canned in natural juices, etc… that can go well beyond dates on can.

If there is a zombie apocalypse, you are trying to survive getting your brain eaten by the undead and you find refuge in a house that is stocked with canned goods…. Are you really looking at dates at that point?

Went to mom and dads
Make swedish meatball casserole and a meatloaf. Dad loved it.... i will make again with some adjustments.....there is some left over for lunch tomorrow....
I also have someone now coming at 4am to plow and shovel as dialysis wants him to be there by 7...really... ?!?!?!
I am sooo stressed out
This hyper vigilance is exhausting

Nice things you did for M & D....

Little weird and unsolicited side note I HATE rice..
Not weird. I've met others with the same opinion. Rice remains one of the few foods I can consistently count on tolerance-wise.
What I combine with the rice varies with my food reactions.
I did the same. When the covid fever hit (and I mean the scare before the actual pandemic) I thought, might be time to stock up on some food.
After the pandemic started I had a flare up. Food was not my friend. I had gone at least 6 grocery shops with key foods being out of stock. I was getting nervous at my supply of "safe foods".
So, I added multiple sizes and brands of certain items and hit the Rice Lottery that one shop.
Two 20# bags
Three 10# bags
Five 1# bags
Never will I ever run out of rice!
I did give some away as a family friend was in need. But I still have so much rice.
Some things to think about. All that sounds good…till you realize you’ll be eating canned food and rice for days on end.
You're gonna need a lot of fluids to move that much fiber. 😂
The hope is to never need it

Don’t be confused with this storm. If you are getting reports of low end snow after the storm and you had some ice/rain/mixing its compacted. You probably had more snow.
The more compacted, the heavier it tends to be. Use caution during snow removal.
Expiration dates on canned goods. If it says “Sell by” or “Eat by”
Eat by is the most serious label and should be thrown out after the date
Sell by usually means it’s good for a week or two afterward.
Best before date means it’s good before but might taste a bit weird after that date, but still ok to eat.
Yes - confusing but this is what I've read, too.
As long as the can isnt dented or bulging..
Excellent call out! I try to look at all cans before purchase to make sure there are no dents or dings.
Or hissing. I’ve noticed canned pineapple makes this hissing sound before it blows up
Fun story - college friend and his younger brother when they were @ 8 and11 years old.
Older brother comes home from school and sees his younger brother in the kitchen standing in front of the microwave.
OB: What are you cooking?
YB: An egg
OB: What now?
YB: I want to see what happens when you put an egg in the microwave.
OB: Scrambled or???
YB: No - the whole thing
With that, the younger brother opens the microwave door and bends over to peer inside. Takes out the egg with a pot holder and sets it on the counter.
The older brother grabs him around the waist and pulls them both under the kitchen table.
Not two seconds later, the whole thing explodes!
As my friend explained - it was whistling... like that sound effect they use in movies for artillery shells.
Good thing we ducked, too! That egg was like lava! It got everywhere too - walls, ceiling, floor, cabinets.
Ten years later, when our mom sold the house, there was still yellow egg yolk lacquered to the cabinets.
Seriously youve had cans Hiss?? WOW
Caution: Acidic foods - like tomatoes.
I had tomato paste eat its way through the side of a can. Made a mess - but was easier to clean up than the cans of tomato sauce, which thankfully maintained their structural integrity.
You might be better off with glass than cans for tomatoes??

She takes such good care of them!!!

The parents deserve it..... and the care shows. I think probably most everyone here has a relatable story.

Its good to see.... and I am sure the parents are doing well. The care givers need to be recognized as well.

It is a really tough job. Tip of the cap folks...

Snow fall amounts in this storm is a little confusing. At least in this area.

In the greater PA, DE, NJ, NY area there is talk of anywhere of 5-14 inches of snow. Then there is the talk of ice or mixing in this storm.

Now it is quite possible that Sunday an area could get 14 inches of snow. But when the storm is over, someone could go out and measure 8 inches and think that this storm was overhyped. But the ice/rain/mix compacted the 14 inches down to 8. It happens.

Don’t be confused with this storm. If you are getting reports of low end snow after the storm and you had some ice/rain/mixing its compacted. You probably had more snow.
I’m abt 50 miles north of you… pretty much the same here.

Wel see what happens.

Im Canadian so Firearms arent much of thing here I used to have some long guns I was a hunter... What do you reccomend as a good survival firearm? A Shotgun?
A lot of people swear by a simple .22LR. It can kill most game, and you can pack 500 rounds and hardly notice the extra weight. Proper shot placement can net you a deer, but would only recommend trying in extreme emergencies. (There's a lot of deer been collected in hard times that way around here.)

Cans all contain a plastic liner. It's applied as a liquid, and forms a protective layer.

If that tomato ate through the can, the liner was defective!

Unfortunately, those plastics are made with BPA feedstock. So anyone sensitive to that stuff should stay clear.

Oddly, plastic soda bottles are not made with BPA. They use a different plastic, and ace actually less likely to expose you to chemicals than cans of soda.

PET or PETG for most soda bottles.

my spelling is gonna suck

Polyethylene Triphthalate, or that Glycol Modified for the PETG. The glycol makes it springier.

I'm sure @Greylag has one...
Have you seen the Ted Lasso recipe?
I'm not a cookie or shortbead person, so don't know if this recipe is any good or not. Opinions anyone?

They are a thing... just not the way they're being faffed about on social media.
It's the hyperbole of it spread on socials that I don't like. Perverting science for clicks and likes.
I've lived in the Midwest my entire life and have experienced both. Trees with frost breaks are very common. I likely have more than one in my backyard right now. Given the low temps last night, I was expecting one of those frost quake "POPS" and was not disappointed.
But nothing "exploded" and I was never at any "risk".

Edited for grammar

One other survival food.

Instant coffee. It is def for emergencies but I have this Folgers coffee that’s in tea bags and they are pretty good and have a longer shelf life.
1769235741375.png Gotta have the coffee (and/or tea)
I can't find a blasted thing and I still have a few things from my old apartment to move yet...
And a blizzard is looming. I've got until January 31st yet
No matter how prepared and organized... You've still got time, Rj... you're gonna make it! 🫂
