The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I roasted the batch of green chile that I picked last week and held in the fridge, then I covered the gas grill. With daylight savings time ending tonight, that's it for the season -- both the chile season and the grilling season.

I've written a few hundred words, and maybe there's a thousand more to write to reach the end of my Christmas tale. I'm not sure if I'll look for a beta reader or not. Many of my beta readers have given me excellent feedback that I haven't used. I don't know if there's a point to getting a beta reader unless I put in the time and effort to use what they tell me.

The pot is cold and the cinnamon rolls are stale. I can fix the coffee, but someone else will have to supply the rolls.

Luckily, I stopped by the doughnut shop before coming here so they're on the counter next to the pot ...

I made some banana bread. I didn't have any cinnamon, so I added a couple of tablespoons of cocoa.

Have at it. It's great toasted with a coffee. 😁

Trying to figure out a middle-of-the-night (4:00 a.m.) "WHUMP" that shook the house and made me jump out of bed. It sounded like it was in our yard or next door, like a big branch falling. It was raining and fairly windy.

I stepped outside in my bathrobe* and Crocs to check the backyard, and front and west sides of the house including the neighbor's yard, finding nothing obvious. C asked if I was dreaming it, but, no I wasn't, I was partly awake anyway. Will need to survey again in better light.

* - It was not cold (~68°) and given the hour I was debating about whether I wanted to get the bathrobe wet. Fortuitous that I did - three cars passed in the two minutes I was out front. At four in the morning? Whatever...

Did you check your roof?

No, whatever it was didn't hit the roof. There we hear every stupid acorn dropping from the neighbor's oak. Definitely a big thump on the ground, like when our tree people drop big hunks of branch. They were nowhere to be seen. ;)

Wife had a good laugh when I told her the "almost" with the bathrobe. She knows me well.

If it startled you from sleep, couldn’t it have been nearby lightning? You might have slept through a bright flash or misheard a loud bang, but the whump would have been unmissable.

My most recently favorite photo:

TxRad would understand how stories can grow out of a picture like this. I have a scaled-down version of the picture in an app on my desktop. She's been talking to me a lot lately.

I figure the image is from ~1960 and the model is probably about twenty. If she's still with us, she'd be in her mid 80's.

I managed to write a few hundred words yesterday. This morning I'm going to delete most of them. Sigh.
I'm plugging away on mine tonight. Editing mostly, but I have quite a bit still to finish writing up. I'm enjoying my blasphemous little tale. LOL. I'm sure it'll offend a few people - incest, Loving Wives and a terrible take on the Catholic Mass! I am damned for eternity I tell you, damned!

I need an extra large mug of coffee this morning. It's been rainy for the last couple days, and I got up before dawn to dense fog. It was a warm autumn, and then it wasn't.

The cottonwoods along the river delayed their color change by a couple weeks, but now they're in full color. In another sign of the advancing season, I ordered new seed garlic and should be able to plant next year's crop before the end of the month.

My sense of time is a mess right now. The holiday story had me living Thanksgiving weekend, and now it's almost Christmas in story land. Every now and then I have to reconcile the story timeline with reality.

I need more than coffee today. My cold (and that's all it is according to my doctor, but what the fuck does she know?) is worse today. These little pills aren't doing much for my symptoms and aren't making me feel better. I'm 100% sure they're just sugar pills. Very expensive sugar pills, but still just sugar.

Oh, it's that way IRL. The span between Halloween and New Year's Day has become one big blur. Cartoon I read last Friday summed it all up: "Okay, that was the last trick-or-treater. Put on the Christmas music."

We have snow on the mountain this morning. I couldn't see it from home because of the fog, but that's gone now. There's another storm coming in tonight and a chance that snow will make it all the way to the valley.

Here's an extra cup of coffee and maybe a mug of cocoa for all the soles manning the poling places.

...sneaks to a seat in the back, hoping for a haven away from political talk. And coffee.

Am in need of lots of strong coffee. And cake.

The weather service predicts 90% snow coverage today. It hasn't started yet, but radar shows it inching closer. The cats are haunting me, waiting for breakfast (nothing new), and I may have worked out the segue into the climax of my holiday tale.

Okay, we will have Captain Orange for another four years, 'nuffsaid! Let's have a cup of coffee and talk about other things.
