The 'How To' Contest Support Thread

If anyone is serious? about writing 'How To's that do not fit this contest, how about another AH chain series of 'How To' to be submitted as Chain Stories/Humor and Satire?

I could retrieve the hunt for the Gerund from the waste basket.

No one is supposed to write entries specifically for the Last Place (tm) Contest - they should be genuine attempts at the main contest that are not appreciated by the less-than-illuminati.

Is anyone else mad enough to try for the Fringe event?

If so, it should be a separate thread.

Og

I'm in... why not!

Yep, that works too. :) I'm not going to write something I don't enjoy, and inspiration comes in the strangest ways.

Exactly.. an instructional essay just sounds a bit too "school deadline" to me.

I'm new around here so could be wrong but I guess if you send it earlier, you have more chance of building up the votes ?

hm, sounds logical. so i guess i might do that. hm, if i manage... got invited to a concert tomorrow, and am leaving friday morning, so gotta see if i do it on thursday.

I'm going to hospital tomorrow morning for a series of X-rays on my back and in the afternoon I'm off to South Wales for five days hunting my wife's ancestors.

Please keep this thread alive and encourage each other while I'm gone.

Will.

Good luck for the x-ray and have fun with the hunting. :D

Thank you, dampy.

The X-rays will tell me nothing I don't already know. I had X-rays taken in 2002 and my back is now worse.

The hunting should be interesting. My wife's family lost contact with the relations from her grandfather's generation in the 1930s. There could be dozens of them because the grandfather had about eight siblings.

On my side of our family we are still in contact with most relations from that far back. About 450 'blood' relations turned up to my parents 50th wedding anniversary and many sent apologies for absence. My wife's family could manage about 30...

If you send it too early, it might not be entered in the contest. The best idea might be to send it now, marked as a contest entry and include in the "Notes" the request that it not be posted until a certain date. I think it's the 14th but I'm not sure.

450?!

Both my parents were from families of 12 children born between 1885 and 1915 and they were in contact with their cousins also from large families.

When I went to Australia in 1960 I found I had 50 relations I had never heard of, all descended from one of my mother's cousins. Now those 50 have increased to about 120. They weren't at the 50th wedding...

My wife's family tree so far has about 60 names on it and that is only the ones who have died. Their living descendants number in the 100s.

Back on track - I hope everyone is ready for the opening day of submissions on the 14th. If not, why not? Get writing! ;)

I will have to submit mine now because I will be out of touch in rural Wales for the next few days. I might find an internet cafe but from experience some cafes reject Lit as an acceptable website.

Regards to all.

Og

I'm ready. It's been written, edited, revised, edited, revised, and checked a final time. Nothing like being thorough. (Or is that called overkill? :D ) Anyway, I'm excited! I hadn't finished anything in months and I'm damned proud of this one. SJ, you did one hell of a job with the edit. I appreciate it. :nana: :nana:

Og,
Good Luck with the x-rays. I know back pain unfortunately. Hope your's is fixable!

On another note, I have two ideas for this How to writing contest and cannot seem to choose. One is a non-erotic essay and the other is very erotic. I am very hesitant to write erotica as I've never done that and don't want to be bad at it. I also don't want my non-erotic idea to be laughed at.

Fear, you say? You bet. What to do, what to do?
Somehow I feel compelled to write something but this damn fear keeps jumping in front of me.............

Did I mention that I don't consider myself a writer. I just get ideas and have to put them on paper or they just bang around inside my head.
Is that it? Should I think of myself as a writer.....it's too early for me to be thinking.
Ok, so now my insecurity is really showing. I hate when that happens. Better go now before I totally embarass myself.

AS i said in an earlier post, I was not going to enter this contest, feeling that I was neither knowledgeable nor expert enough to tell anybody how to do anything. At least, nothing that would interest Lit members or readers of dirty stories. Then it occurred to me that there is one thing I have always claimed to do better than anybody, and that is to write smut. So, that will be my how-to entry: How to write smut.

I should be able to submit it by Monday of next week. :D

Good luck with your back, Og. Back pain can be excruciating, and usually there's not much to be done about it. :( I have been hobbling around since my badk went out on Valentine's Day. It has gotten better, but I can still feel there is something wrong. I've had this problem for about thirty years now.

Just the thought of bumping for Og makes me go weak.

Boxy, please go for it. The techniques and balance of stroke stories would be really worth reading. i enjoy your stories but would struggle to imitate.

Looking forward to your emission. :p

Please don't be like that! I'm sure that you have plenty to offer in a How-To. Don't beat yourself down. And why do you feel that you have to choose between two ideas? Do them both! ;)
