But, hey, I'm from the South, which everyone loves to mock for deep-frying shit. I still say that there's nothing edible that's not better battered and fried, though. It's just that sensible people only do it occasionally.

while i'm not exactly batter-happy (the idea of deep-fried candy, pastries, butter, etc., makes me hurl), i don't get those folks who deny any appeal to fried foods whatsoever. variety is the spice of life after all, and to never experience anything fried, from fresh catfish and hush puppies and okra, to chicken pan-fried in my grandmother's super heavy cast iron skillet, to traditional belgian frites with a dash of sea salt and all the proper sauces, mmmmm!!...sorry but that would just be a life a lot less worth living. and despite my rural virginia roots the most often prepared deep-fried item in this house is not southern at all, it's actually tempura...root veggies of every kind, broccoli and several types of squash, onions, and of course shrimp to round it all out. all deep-fried in peanut oil with a few tablespoons of toasted sesame oil for flavor and aroma. and lemme tell ya, there ain't nothin' wrong with that.

Now I'm mad at you, OSG. You mentioned hush puppies, and I don't have any!

:p

OK, tempura. Yes. I will have that very occasionally. But as I understand it, the whole design of how tempura is prepared is to cook it without the oil saturating the food...which is what grosses me out about deep fried stuff.

French fries... occasionally. Fried chicken...maybe once a year. Same with "fish & chips". It's not so much the taste even, as how horrible I feel after I've eaten it. Seriously, I feel sick to my stomach if I eat deep fried food. And that's not a slander against the south, just a fact.

That is just an eewwww for me..
I love deep fried food.. & it loves my hips too.. :(

delicious hushpuppies...man I'm so excited for our new Long Johns to open up. We haven't had one in town for years....now I can get my Horribly Greasy Fish cravings taken care of :p

heck i'm mad at myself, now i have a craving without a good enough excuse to make some. :(

Dear OSG's Daddy,

You wouldn't happen to want fish for dinner soon, would you? Just think of the yummy, crunchy, fishy goodness. Also, the hushpuppies. Those are very nice. I'm sure OSG will be glad to fix those things for you.

Sincerely,
A Concerned Bunny

Yep, tempura is supposed to be very, very light. Actually, if you fry any food quickly at a high enough temperature, it's supposed to taste light rather than heavy.

yes, definitely light. improperly fried food gives all pan and deep-fried yumminess a bad rap. after all the crisp is the most important part, and heavy fried food will actually come out almost soggy. the temperature and timing are very important, but also the type of oil or fat used. plain old vegetable oil should not be used for frying anything imo.

I haven't called my NA sponsor at midnight his time in MANY years. I did tonight. Between my ex-girlfriend non-fatally ODing over the weekend and being an "online counselor/confessional" for an active addict, I am overwhelmed...overwhelmed with my own emotions. I can't do this alone.

As usual, he told me what I needed to hear...not what I wanted to hear...but what I needed to.

Just for today, I will stay clean.
Just for today, I will not fall victim to others' plays on my heart and emotions.
Just for today, I will realize that living is ALWAYS better than the slow hell of dying from addiction.

<hugs> hang in there. I can't imagine how difficult that situation is for you. I've gotten pretty stressed being someone's online counselor before and they didn't even have "real problems" >.< Feel better!!!!

Everything deep fried I've ever had, barring one, one batch of tempura I had last year, has left me feeling like there's oil pouring out of my pores. Even if it has been crispy when I've eaten it. So my experiences with fried food are far from good. It's not common here to fry things, except for some pastry which are prepared once a year around 1st of May, so maybe that's why my experiences are horrible.

This discussion has been completely fascinating to me, though. :)

OMIGHAWD you guys, why are we talking about fried food!

Mmm... fried chicken. Fried Okra. Fried Zucchini. Fried catfish. Frybread. beignets.

Fried things is my downfall.

OSG!!! I have been missing you, girl! I was getting worried!

I have fried Oreos once a year, at our town's memorial day fair. I couldn't eat them more often than that, but I like them once a year. This past year, they also had fried snickers, etc. I got the fried reeses cups, because I love peanut butter, but honestly I didn't like them. I think the fried Oreos are appealing because of how the cookies go soft, but are still there. The fried reeses were just a blob of goo.

Where on earth did I hear that my student health insurance extends to 12/31/11?? Because it doesn't. It's only until 7/14/11. Which means it's over. Fucking fuck. Hopefully my wife can get me on her insurance soon. I have enough meds to last me a little while, I think, but this is SO NOT GOOD. I wish I remembered who I talked to or where I heard that it would extend until the end of the year. Somebody told me that even though it starts in summer, it technically goes by calendar year, so I would be covered until December. The insurance company's website does NOT reflect that. Fucking fucking fuck!!

oh god make it stoooooppppppp -.-

with my IUD, I SO INFREQUENTLY cycle that when it happens it always catch me off guard and it seems like my body has to make up for lost misery -.-

*cuddles up with hot pad* so...much...agony...

Usually it goes my enrollment date, so the end of thier year, not end of the calander year.

Loosing insurance is considered a "life changing event" and will allow you to be added to your wife's with out it being the "open enrollment" period. But you only have 30 days from the date of the event to enroll in the new insurance, which would mean you've passed that now too. But you can ask about other life changing events you might qualify for.

I hope you can find a way in.
