The Isolated Blurt Thread XXXVII: You're Welcome, Fuckers

I still want eggs but I'm not rich.

We’ve paid more for eggs for years because I only buy free range or barn laid ones. I don’t mind paying a few dollars more for happier chickens. In saying that, they reckon bird flu is less likely to occur in cages so I dunno man. Damned if you do.

All of that, combined with H7 in Victoria last year has pushed the price up to around $8 AUD a dozen. It’ll go up again when major supermarkets phase out or ban battery cages.

I like the idea of being able to choose. Some people can’t afford free range. Apparently caged egg sales have dropped to around 10%, which means less people are buying them. And I think if caged chickens are going to stay they should have bigger cages. At the very least.

You're better off buying a few chickens and a coop. It's probably cheaper to take care of an actual chicken.
Not here in southcentral Alaska where the bears, lynx, and coyotes roam freely across the yard and the mink and ermine scoot through all the the tightest wire cages. Home chicken farming never really pays off.

our free-rangers have done a cool job of keeping the two flowerbeds outside the back door pretty tidy... the foliage of the plants we want there (daffs/narcissi/tulips/other stuff) are really lush and not fighting with weeds for the nutrients/water

finished the cuke/bean/cow pea row today, all pretty, raised, guttered and free of weeds. Yesterday, strung the asparagus green bean section and put in the canes ready for them to climb; still got one section for the regular beans to string. First pack of corn seeds in damp paper, germinating ready to pot on.

I've been reading a lot in the evenings. I'm into science fiction and fantasy genres. Some have a bit of romance but I'm not a romance person. blah

I just see no point in reading about it. Now if I had a partner, I love a bit of romance. To me, reading about romance makes my top lip curl.

I'm not spending my days off catching up on laundry and shit around the house.

So tired of this crap

I got an email to call HR and thought "Oh, shit, what did I do?", but it was to tell me that they've been overcharging me for my short term disability policy for over two years and they're cutting me a check for $1400. Whew!

Poor Henrietta.
at our house, they get to live till they die of old age or something, but not human intervention (well, with that exception...) If they've spent the best of their days popping out eggs for us to eat, they deserve a little 'me' time, no?

how do companies get away with this shit? The check is nice, but it makes me wonder how many people they (or other companies) have done it to which means someone, somewhere, has been earning extra interest in money they should never have had and then you get paid a check reflecting ONLY the extra they took... and so they earn on you and others' hard work by doing nothing.

Are you saying that the chooks do the weeding for you???

🤔

😳

That “exception” wouldn’t happen to be a certain rooster that met a grisly & untimely end at the hands of a notorious rooster killer, would it???

i think it's the constant scrabbling about between the established plants and the hefty tubers of the irises that means the weeds don't get a chance to establish. Works for me :)

Now if only they'd do it in ALL the flower beds...

so i'm a third of the way down the tomatoes/peppers/leeks row... planned to do more but it was a humid 79% outside. *sigh* it's fucking March
