I know what you mean, although I'm missing a person and wish I could go back to when I was with her. But we do have to accept the march of time and fate, and that it doesn't always take us in the direction we wanted.
At some point, your mind and heart DO make that shift, and what you feel isn't sadness about the past that you have lost but...nostalgia, I think. The knowledge that even if you COULD go back, it would never be the same...that your time there was special and unique and won't be repeated, because even the place itself has changed. I feel that way about some places to where I traveled when I was younger...I long to go back there but know that in a sense I'll be disappointed, because they won't be the way that I remember. But, then again, they could improve with age in some ways.
I am waiting for that time with this past relationship...to when I can look back with fond, somewhat wistful memories and be nostalgic about what we had, rather than be sad at what we lost. I know that even if we got back together, we have both been changed by what we went through, during the ending as well as afterwards. So, I need to understand that there really IS no going back...that what we had is gone for good and even trying to return to it would just show how different things are.
I'm waiting for the time when I've internalized that reality. I wonder how long one has to wait to get to that point.
