They're cheaper, better trained, less prone to substance abuse, and free from local, tyrannical guilds.There’s a tendency to use Brit actors for Americans in that early 20th century period. I think there’s an assumption that Brits are still a bit ‘proper’ and that that attitude suits the manners and formality of the 1940s etc. That was the thinking in casting Damian Lewis in Band of Brothers at least.
