The ways we neglect ourselves

*hugs*

As soon as I go grocery shopping, I'm going to go back on my sugar free, gluten free, milk free diet. Not because it's gonna do squat for my weight, but because my feet don't hurt me when I'm on it and my energy is better. The bad side? I'm going to be a bitch on wheels for the first two weeks while I deal with sugar cravings. :(

Get yourself some of the good expensive dark chocolate - the stuff with almost no sugar in it so you can calm the inner beast when it rears it's head. Then at least you are satisfying your cravings with something that is good for you. :D

Dark chocolate has no milk or gluten in it and should have minimal amounts of sugar.

PLUS- it's an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory!

To everyone who has heard why I'm fat, be warned. I'm about to go over it again.

I'm not fat because I eat too much, I'm fat because I was on prednisone, off and on, for several years. I've had prednisone put into IV's to keep me alive. Add diabetes and that it's hard for me to move around cause of my arthritis, and I've had doctors tell me I'm fucked. My new doctor wants me on a diet, that works, but it's $360 dollars a month, and I cannot afford it.

Prednisone is EVIL. I was on it for poison ivy once. Man that stuff does nasty shit to a person!

As for the expensive diet - back in college I was attending school full-time and working part-time. I had an endocrinologist tell me I needed to get a personal trainer to lose the weight. I looked at him and asked him how much he felt that would cost me. He told me a couple hundred a month. My Mom who was with me for the appointment beat me to the next question, "How is she supposed to afford that on a part-time job?" The Doctor in his typical pompous attitude responded, "Well you can pay for it for her right?" Mom was incensed - seeing my Parents at times when I was growing up could barely afford the modest rent on the house we lived in at the time. So I spoke up and said to him, "Well when you feel generous enough to pay for my trainer, maybe I'll see one." I'll add that was the last time I saw him. I cancelled my follow-up appointment with the pompous ass.

You really should file complaints against doctors like that. GUARANTEED they've treated other people that way. My mom filed one against a VERY rude doctor, and it turns out it was one of the last straws on that camel's back. He was sacked.

And the very-dark chocolate is a VERY good idea. I've got a couple bars of the Lindt 99% dark chocolate. I have to have it shipped in, but they're very good about their shipping and the actual bar is only a few bucks. So it's kind of expensive just for some chocolate, but the flavor is so intense, so rich and so CHOCOLATEY, that I go through the bars pretty slowly. It's REALLY good at kicking chocolate cravings in the ass!!

Good idea. Especially for when I'm PMSing.

I was on it once for poison oak (we don't have poison ivy). But mostly I've been on it for my crohns disease. The last time I was on it I was on it for a year, while they got the govt to cover my remicaid. It makes me into a bitch from HELL, but it also makes me really fat. Barring the most recent ten pounds I've gained every pound I gained was while on prednisone. The last ten pounds was a result of the fucking sugar free diet that was supposed to help me LOSE weight.

You don't want to get me started on doctors. Assholes are the least of my problem when it comes to doctors - I'm an idiot magnet. I've had more doctors nearly kill me than one person should have to deal with in their life.

Where do you order it from? Cause, honestly, I can't think of anywhere around here that has good dark chocolate.

I've gotten very very good chocolate from Trader Joe's, if there's one in your area...

I prefer Ghiradelli or Godiva dark chocolate. I also miss See's candy from when I lived in Cali.

Grace,
I hope you don't think my comments were directed at you in any way, that was not my intention at all. Your thoughts just served as a jumping off point for my own "thinking out loud". I apologize if my comments came across as directed at you in any way.

Sorta. There's one about an hour away. But I could stock up, and have K hide it so I don't eat it all one night .... :D

Oh, gosh no. I just figure that lit is sick of hearing my story, so I posted a warning. lol

I have an Aunt with Chrone's Disease. Her diet is simply gluten/wheat free and she also doesn't eat leafy greens and she's fine. She still has sugar and dairy now and then and it doesn't bother her.

The only sugar-free diets I know of that would make you GAIN weight are the ones where you eat all fatty nasty foods like red meat and fried food - think Atkins. There's a reason why the diet's founder died of heart disease! Please tell me your nutty doctors were smart enough to NOT put you on such a diet....

I have a friend who is well versed in herbal medicine and I will ask him for you what you can take that will help Chrone's Disease. He mixed me a tincture of Red Clover, Clever and Cinnamon that I am now taking to help my Ovarian Cysts. Red Clover and Clever are both blood purifiers and anti-inflammatories. He said he added the cinnamon simply to give it better flavor! He distills it in rum , strains it, and then bottles it. He told me to put 5-6 drops into whatever I was drinking once a day.

I lost a lot of my faith in the medical profession years ago, so your lack of trust in Doctors is perfectly understandable. It's why I have shifted somewhat toward treating myself using herbal/natural solutions.

I'm not doing this to start a debate, merely to offer my experience.
Atkins is not about fried and fatty and red. Its about vegetables, low GI and lean protien. I was never so healthy and trim as when I was on the Atkins plan, my weight didn't double until after I quit adhereing to the principles. Now I'm trying to get back to eating like that.

I do something very simular, they hypoglycemic diet is almost a mirror of Atkins.

I always drop pounds when I'm following it closely too. But I am such a carb-aholic. The sugar isn't as hard to give up as the carbs.

I also dropped a good deal of weight when I got off pop and drank only water. I had much more energy and just felt better. I was completely off of it until I made my trip to Ireland. I've had a hard time giving it up now.

Atkins took me from 310 to 150 after my second child. I can't say enough good things about it. It is what I am striving to get back to now!

I don't eat a lot of fried foods, unless I'm about to start my period. I'm not so big on fat or red meat (they're hard to digest and make me sick), but once a month I HAVE to have something with red meat that's been deep fried. Think chicken fried steak.

Thanks, that'd be cool.

I can't live without my doctors - literally. My crohns is rarely far from the surface. With the new meds I'm on I can miss my meds occasionally, and be okay. The last time I was hospitalized I'd only missed my meds for a month (couldn't afford them), and that was enough to put me in the hospital for eleven days.

It helps that I only take my meds once a month these days. Of course it normally takes me a week to take them after they're shipped to me. I hate giving myself shots.

I do something very simular, they hypoglycemic diet is almost a mirror of Atkins.

At my next doctors appointment, which is next month (my cholesterol is high, but the meds they put me on made me sick), I'm going to see if I can learn a bit more about the hypoglycemic diet. I know I do better when my diet isn't carb heavy, so I'm thinking we'll go that way this time.

I also dropped a good deal of weight when I got off pop and drank only water. I had much more energy and just felt better. I was completely off of it until I made my trip to Ireland. I've had a hard time giving it up now.

I'm very corn intolerant, and that includes corn syrup, so I cut pop from my diet a long time ago. I figure that as sick as corn syrup makes me I want it to be chocolate flavored when I ingest it. Otherwise it's not worth my while.

The only thing with that is that a lot of doctors still don't recognize hypoglycemia. I've had doctors look at me and say "there's no such thing", so if he doesn't know what you're talking about don't be discouraged.

If you take out that first part of Atkins where you basically starve your body so it starts using the fat resources, it's pretty much the hypoglycemic diet. Many mini meals through out the day, high protein, low carb.

I need some fish recipes. I get very bored with chicken, so I tend to eat a lot of beef. I don't care much for pork. I do really like fish though, but I don't know how to cook it other than fried or baked in butter. Both kinda kill the point.

Diet pop has no corn syrup. :D Not that fake sugar is any better. I think it was more the increase in water than the decrease in pop anyway. Get everything all hydrated and cleansed.

The first 5 days on Atkins was hard for me, but once i got over that hump I loved it! I had more energy and was in a better mood than I had ever been before and I lost the baby weight. I might actually return to it now, not to lose weight but because of the emotional and energy boost it gave me.

For baking fish you can substitute olive oil for the butter, its got a little heavier flavor but it adds character. You can also spray it with non-stick cooking spray in place of the butter.

Any herbs you like work with fish, especially ocean white fish or tillapia; they are basically blank slates flavor wise. We like dill weed and a quick splash of lemon juice. Friends of ours swear by Mrs. Dash. Hubby likes lemon pepper on his fish. Occasionally, if we don't mind the carbs, we mix half and half Italian bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese, dredge the fish and pan sear quickly in screaming hot olive oil. Yummy, but an indulgence because of the carb count. (That, and we usually have it with alfredo over whole wheat noodles)

You might also check out some wild game cookbooks, they usually have a fish section.

For fish like salmon and trout:

2 cloves garlic, minced
6 tablespoons light olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
2 (6 ounce) fillets salmon

Directions
In a medium glass bowl, prepare marinade by mixing garlic, light olive oil, basil, salt, pepper, lemon juice and parsley. Place salmon fillets in a medium glass baking dish, and cover with the marinade. Marinate in the refrigerator about 1 hour, turning occasionally.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Place fillets in aluminum foil, cover with marinade, and seal. Place sealed salmon in the glass dish, and bake 35 to 45 minutes, until easily flaked with a fork. (We usually just line the dish with foil)

This marinade is so good we dress tomatoes with it and drizzle it over warm whole wheat noodles, too.

well you can always grill fish. And you can bake it without butter!! Particularly with the skin still on, then it gets all nice and crispy and MMMmm. If you get whole fillets/fish (Both sides), you can stuff them with delicious herbages for seasoning them too!! Then they just get SO TASTY O.O

The easiest way to cook fish is to get it whole, open it up, take out the innards and stuff with herbs and spices, onion, garlic, lemon, ginger, whatever you want, really. Then put it on an oven-proof dish, add a tiny bit of olive oil, if you think it's needed (it might not be) and pop it in the oven until done.

And a really easy way to make a whole meal with fish is to use tinfoil. Take a large piece of tin foil, chop (and parboil if needed) whatever veggies you like, put the veggies on the tin foil along with whatever fish it is that you're using. Add some (but not too much!) fish or vegetable stock, or you could also use wine if you like it. Roll the sides up to make a parcel that won't leak and put it in the oven. The fish and the vegetables will steam inside the parcel and the flavors will marry beautifully. Seasoning might be a bit tricky at first, as you can't really taste it while it's baking, but if you make it more than once, you'll soon find the right balance.

I always cook fish with bell peppers, onion, garlic, and butter. Just put a tab of butter (not margerine), slice the bell peppers, onion up and put on top, add some garlic, salt and pepper, cook at 350, and yummers.

Not only do I hate diet pop, but I'm allergic to aspartame - it gives me heart burn like I'm about to die.

Thanks for all of the fish tips ladies. :) I'm a bit icked out about cooking something with eyes though.

There's only one place I can buy live/fresh fish around here, fortunately it's the same place I can get local grown and exotic veggies, so it's one stop. The fish monger would probably cut the head off if I asked right?

I have a duck in the freezer too, whole. It was on sale (don't know why) so I figured I'd give it a shot, but I haven't figured out what to do with it either. I know it's very high in fat, so I'm waiting for a special occation, and to get lots of veggies to go with it.

gracie I started drinking diet when I was like 12, when we first discovered my sugar issues. I'm so used to it now that I can't stand regular.

Any decent butcher or fishmonger should cut off the head, trim any fins you want trimmed, etc...etc... for you from fresh fish. They may not ask if you want it done, but if they refuse to do it, they aren't providing a full service to you.

Ughhh...Atkins. I tried it and, during the induction phase, my blood sugar got so low that I passed out.

However, I did and do have pretty good luck with the Sugar Busters program. :)
