Sort of. I'm still stuck a little about this topic. Perhaps it's because my grandmother frequently substituted the phrases "blue million" and "umpteen" for each other. Each one has a specific number in it, but still meant what she wanted it to mean.

Well, seriously, use the colloquialisms. Everyone will understand them, if the context is clear enough-- or you can add an entertaining digression, such as the one you just posted about your grandmother, and they add so much locality to a story.

I just used "Dotted him one" and an Australian friend was able to understand what I meant, and enjoyed the concept very much.

I guess I'm so accustomed to the misinformed idea that southern=stupid, especially when you try to write using "southern english" that I forgot how much charm some of it has.

Are they moving at the pace they want to be at?
