Thinkings, feelings and...doings ~ 2013

First yes I did misspell a word. Not going to point out any ones error in that regard. Chinaman, Irishman, and Scotsman have ALL been used as a derogatory term right in the us and in other countries. Which lit dose not distinguish between. You used the term right here. Where? At the same time that all of those ( )man terms were used to degrade they were also used by tho use country men to identify themselves. Americans first started using the term chinamen before railroads in the US. So before a time in our not so proud history when Americans treated the Chinese like subhumans. Now yes if CG said chink I would crawl all over him about it. But he used chinaman to identify a man from china in china. I'm not seeing an issue there. If he said japp to describe a man for china I would have an issue. China between world war one and two let's look at that a large population of Brits and Americans in that country who worked with Chinese and used the term daily with out degradation. As for the word gay pick up a dictionary and you will find an excepted definition that dose not mean homosexual. But your saying that because your in america where most people assume gay to be derogatory no one on lit may use the term. Because you say? If someone called me a kike because of my blood line yes I would be up set the word was invented to be derogatory. If they asked if I was German because I have German blood, ID say no I'm American. Big difference. If someone called me a Scotsman, again I would correct them. Not immediately take offense because it was once used to slander based on birthplace. As to your question about a Georgia plantation and using the n- word. Which n-word Niger or negro again context. Negro was a word made up by black men at the time as a mark of pride. Niger being used would pass me off because it was invented just to be derogatory. As for my point about little bighorn it is still taught in public schools that all of the native Americans who fought were young braves. So because it says so in a book, despite proof to the contrary it must be so? Scotsman. Saying you can't use it to describe some of my ancestors because it was used for degradation, is absurd. It is because you say so, does not make it so. It is because it was, dose not make it so either.

Your posts have actually made me take back my entire point before and swing entirely towards Scuttles' side.

Scuttles, I apologize.

I was coming at him under the pretext that handling things in a public manner was the improper, and cowardly, way to go about this. He asserted it wouldn't have changed anything. I believe now, after reading the last few bits of this thread, that he was entirely correct.

Otherwise, I've nothing more to say other than I don't agree that using racial slurs is OK in a public arena.

I'm sorry for upsetting any one not involved in the discussion. And you are right Serpentine we should have found a more discrete way to do this.

I agree. And may I make one further point, you compared 'Chinaman' to Irishman, Englishman, Scotsman. Not the same thing, if I may just make the point as an English teacher. People from Ireland are Irish - Irishman. People from England are English, therefore Englishman. People from Scotland are Scots, therefore Scotsman. People from China are Chinese, so in whatever context the word was used it can't be written off as a mistake.

And may I further point out, I do not know why CG is being tarred and feathered because of what was said. Yes he said the word, but he wasn't the first one to have used it. Nor has he been the last, as it has since been used in the same thread again today. His character should not have been dragged across the coals for this at all. He has always been nice to me, and I have found him welcoming any time I have ventured into his thread. It is merely for other reasons I don't use it anymore.

I don't understand why we can't all just get along...

I think what happened here is that Scuttle made a general statement and it was assigned to one person, by no real fault of his own. It's just the way the discussion ended up flowing. He did mention that he hadn't directed it towards one person in particular but that wasn't a point that was pursued.

How am I feeling RN? It's cold and rainy today. I'm going to make myself into a ball of blankets and watch Supernatch for pure comfort.

eats massive chocolate bar

Oh yeah, Scuttle's statement was justified. The whole thing just kind of ballooned when the less informed started jumping on the bandwagon.

Anyway. I just had the best shower ever. And this is the best chocolate bar ever. It has hazelnuts. Want some?

Unnfff, yessss.

takes proffered chocolate.

Thanks! It's a chocolate kind of day around here. It's so gloomy. It's been awhile since I saw such a nasty sky. And I believe later I'll have the best bath ever, which mostly means I'll read a book and forget I'm in the tub.

Those are the best kind of baths. I've literally lain in one until the water's cold and I'm thinking: "Just one more chapter..."

I know! My fingers will be all wrinkly which weirds me out, but it's worth it for pure indulgence.

sighs dreamily.

In the summer sometimes it's colder ones and Walt Whitman. It just feels right somehow.

Thinking.. everyone needs to stuff a sock in their mouth and get along already! We are here to have fun, and write not argue with one another.

Feeling-I wish more people thought like this.
