Torrey Pines: The U.S. Open

Are we talking the Gleneagles resort where the 2014 Ryder Cup will be contested? Now that's a fine looking course. Golf at that level gives me a hardon. ;)
Thats the one. I was just a greenkeepers assistant many moons ago. It's a peach of a course much nicer than St Andrews and less windy too!

How about floggers and canes on selected pyls' bottoms, with a jury of our peers to determine the winner of the duel?

As the original "insult" had to do with golf, a putting or shot-making contest is far more germane. To the winner could go the pick of bottoms to enjoy, though.

I'll be your juror if you want but boys it will have to be done in a gentlemanly spirit no low blows etc!

We could have a Lit Ryder cup. The Dane swings a cane. Don't know about a club. It might not be too hard to talk some of the ladies into being the prizes that go to the winning team.

The Cup will have to be brought to Kentucky by the Europeans first, my friend. And if it's won by the Americans, I suspect that it will be spending most of its time in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

I couldn't help but think of Ben Hogan yesterday as I watched Tiger play his back nine. The limp in his gait, the pain on his face with his fullest shots reminded me of the pain that Hogan played with for the last third of his career. And even under those conditions, his season in 1953 was one of the best in the history of the game.

There was a good historical show on Hogan and the ushering in of the Palmer and Jack years on cable yesterday. A lot of it was about the Masters that Palmer won after he overheard Hogan questioning how Arnie even got in the Masters. And how Jack would have won if he wasn't a 19 year old kid making dumb mistakes. Good stuff. Well, it was the Open at Cherry Hills. They ran it again today.

Come now, spill it. :D

I remember my recovery from knee surgery a few years ago and watching Woods hit it 360 yards on a fragile knee is simply blowing my mind. I wonder if he'll continue his streak of wins when he holds the lead going into the final round.

Inquiring minds, huh? ;)
If you must know, Camilo Villegas is my golf crush. I could watch him for days... sigh....

On Tiger and his knee, I read an article this morning on how he processes pain so much differently than the average person. Instinct is to avoid any movement that causes pain...for most of us its an involuntary behavior. In Woods case, he knows that his swing will cause pain, but at the end of the swing.

From the article on ESPN:

"Woods' overriding of that internal protective mechanism on Saturday, particularly on the final five holes, was an amazing display of intensity and focus. Woods made a conscious decision to continue to play with his hard-driving style and simply deal with the consequences, knowing the sharp pain would come at the tail end of his swing."

"I just keep telling myself that if it grabs me and if I get that shooting pain, I get it," Woods said. "But it's always after impact. So, go ahead and just make the proper swing."

Now the mother in me is worried about that knee. I hope that he doesn't end up damaging it further. Whenever I swing a club properly, I think to myself that every movement my body is making is pretty much contrary to what I should be doing. And my left knee always hurts after a round. Fortunately, I don't make my living on the golf course....

Unbelievable. Three doubles on the first hole in four rounds. And yet I still have to believe that he can - and likely will - win this tournament.

I think it's more likely that Tiger withdraws than wins. He's looking bad.

Properly is the operative word. Now I know why I never hurt.

My golf friends complain of their faces and sides hurting, after a round with me.

This tournament is playing hell with getting my work done. I turn to look for a minute, and 15 minutes later, I'm still looking...

I was hoping old Rocco would win in the end. The odds of beating Tiger two days in a row can't be very good.

Okay, so tomorrow is a national holiday, right? So we can all sit around and watch the playoff?

The reason I hate federer and tiger is because its a solo sport. Im fine with the greatest players who play team sports but when someone dominates a solo sport I just really dont like that individual.

Jealous?

And what's the difference between an individual dominating a solo sport and an individual dominating a team sport (a la Michael Jordan)? In fact, isn't one person dominating a team sport worse?

Though I dont like jordan and who we consider to be the greatest I never really like. Like I dont like michael but wilt. I Dont like christano but kaka. I think randy is the greatest pitcher ever. I just seem to dont like who everyone else considers the best.

I guess the idea of an individual excelling at something is a problem for you. And the idea of others celebrating that excellence is a problem, too.

okay then. carry on and those of us who love "solo" sport (golf, in this case) and "solo" excellence will, too.

Hate... what an ugly word to use.

Yeah, that's just rude. Everyone should take turns winning. Let's legislate it!

I'm sure if there was a poll done, the majority of people on this board don't care for golf... don't want to watch it... have no desire to play it.

Okay. Cool.

But not one of them come in to this thread and make posts like that. Most of them don't even open this thread. They already know it's of no interest to them.

Lots of thread are started here that are of no interest to me or that I feel opposed to. Why should I post those feelings? Does anyone in that particular thread give a fuck how I feel? NO.

And it's just stupidly rude to do that.

I'm game! Although my employer probably isn't....:(

What she said.
Excelling personally is not a bad thing. Ever.
He was wired to be excellent at this. And appreciate him for recognizing his gift and living to his potential. Very few of us have that opportunity. Or even understand our gifts.
And to reiterate ADR's sentiment, hate is really an ugly word.
