Torrey Pines: The U.S. Open

Tiger's a stud! Love him, but, come on, a guy named Rocco winning the US Open? How can that be bad?

Apparently you missed my post about my golf crush named Camilo. Fanning self right now....

But Tiger is the stud right now, in the uber-golfer department. OTH, Rocco being tied with Tiger isn't half bad either. Tied, or even in the top 3 with Tiger is a hell of a lot better than being #18 on the leaderboard. Rocco's parents can be proud! :D And whatever Monday's outcome, Rocco will take home a nice chunk of money. Not bad for a long weekend's work.

You're so right Lily.

And the other point I think people miss here is not that every one in pulling for Tiger as much as everyone is just pulling for outstanding golf.

He happens to be an absolute phenom, especially with this knee situation. But one of my favorite golfers is dead. Payne Stewart. And another is retired. Jack.

My son loves Phil.

But I know I can speak for WD and you and maybe a couple of others, when I say that we just love to see excellent golf and excellent playing.

If Rocco wins, that will be quite a great story! And we'll all see great golf!

Amen sistah! A great story and who doesn't love great golf?!
(and I miss Payne too.... :rose: )

I thought of Payne Stewart several times Saturday and yesterday as I tuned in and out of the Open coverage (I was *supposed* to be working, lol). It's hard to believe that it's been almost 9 years since his plane went down. He is missed - at least by me - in today's Tour.

And now the most important question of the day: What time is tee-off today, and what channel is carrying the playoff? I can't find it on my cable programming guide, nor any mention of the tee time in any of the stories!

Noon on ESPN according to USAToday. Eastern time

Stewart was loved by many.

Ok sorry I dont hate them. On alot of the sports shows they talk about how alot of people cheer for tiger and the excellent to lose. And I do like golf. My all time favorite golfer is payne who died in that plane crash. But who I like now are mike wier and j.b. holmes.

Sorry for using the word hate. I just hate things like inter or rangers or north carolina and yes go duke.

There is great joy and enjoyment in seeing the very best in a man or woman, whether he's a golfer or a scientist.

Rocco looks good. Imagine the psychological pressure of playing one on one with Tiger for a win.

That's got to be crushing in itself.

It's hard to beat someone when you are hitting a 5 iron and they hit a wedge. And they don't miss on the greens. Rocco is hanging in there though.

Sudden death.

I love Rocco's comment: "They wanted a show. They're getting a show." Regardless of the outcome, my respect for him as a golfer and a man has increased by orders of magnitude.

Tiger: 91 holes, in pain... phenomenal.

Rocco: 91 holes, hanging in there to the very end, playing a wonderful tournament and wonderful playoff match. Phenomenal.

The 2008 U.S. Open: One of the best three ever. Maybe one of the two best. Phenomenal.

What a week to be a golf fan!

What great playing, both men!!! What a treat for the last 4 days! You're right, great week to be a golf fan!

Brought a lump to my throat to watch Tiger with little Sam before the trophy presentation. I wish he *had* taken her out there on the green with him to accept the cup.

Ben Hogan meets Michael Jordan, folks. This was yet another "win for the ages."

I was so glad to see Rocco make his par putt on eighteen to keep the playoff going. He played the 19th hole a little less well than Tiger and that was the difference. Imagine how much less compelling this would have been had it been a one or four-hole playoff instead of a full 18.

Rocco is a little like Trevino in that he can only work the ball one way. Starting at 7 was a huge advantage for Tiger. If he could have gotten past 7, he would have had a pretty good chance on the par 3. Then 18 again, another huge advantage for Tiger.

But still, second in the Open after all his back problems and at the age of 45, his play was amazing. He made tons of fans and increased his marketability outside of the course.

They'll be talking about this Open for a long time.
