Twenty Somethings

i learned that i wasn't a nymphomaniac - just a girl with a healthy sexual appetite... ;)

i'm 25, another crazy grad student. my program is 6 years long, which i recently realized would mean that i will have been in college for 10 years.

but, it's still better than having a real job, even if it means that all your friends with real jobs have way more money than you do and don't have to eat rice for days when your stipend dwindles away...

anyway, thanks for starting this thread - great to see so many other 20somethings around...

Poor My Own Way :( I got another few days before I go back. I hope I can enjoy the rest of this break. I don't get another day off till Spring Break!

LOL...Thanks Gemini....If I was you...I'd run away...never go back ;) If the whole class thing isn't bad enough...I just bought my books today....took me over a half an hour to get a parking spot and by the time I left I was 400 dollars poorer....Don't these book companies realize we're poor college students??

I'm in the slammer for 6 years too. I'm half-way done with my 4th. I have to treat it like a job rather than school, otherwise i'll go crazy.

Thanks My Own Way - good to be here! Yeah, my friends are never on the same sleep schedule I am - I don't know what I'd do if I had to get up at 6am everyday and go to an office...

No rocket science for me - I'm getting my PhD in English Lit so I can become a professor and spend the rest of my life in academia. :p

At least I'll always get summers off...

I'm at exactly the same place - middle of fourth year, just starting my dissertation.

I try to treat it like a job too - setting hours aside to work. Although the jail analogy is also pretty accurate...

yes, that does put things in perspective....i feel better knowing that there are people in their 30s in the same place i am. my mom didn't get her masters till she was 40...

Early 20's is an interesting time indeed. Those that went to university in my country (Australia) are just finishing up and finding their place in the professional world. You are expected to act with responsibility and maturity, however a lot of the 'old folk' don't take you seriously and dismiss your ideas very quickly. Of course it's great to put those people in their place, especially when they underestimate your 'youthful enthusiasm'.

From a social point of view, you laugh at the stupid stuff you did in your teen years and wonder how you ever acted that way. I just know then when I hit 30 I'll be doing the same when looking back over the previous 10 years.

Most of the people I'm in class with now are considerably older....some have children older than me! I think more and more people are realizing the value of continuted education and that not everyone is as fortunate as we are in being able to do it early in life. I really admire people who like to learn just for the sake of knowledge...

Oh lord...I look back on some of the things I did when I was 17, 18, 19 and I think WHAT ON EARTH WAS I THINKING???? LOL....not that I did a ton of crazy stuff but there's a few incidences that stand out in my mind as moments of pure stupidity but I can't help but look back on them and laugh. Think about when we're 50...all the silly things we'll have done to crack up over....It's gonna be great...

I'm 28 and have been working since I was 22, although I love my job!

-Another Twentysomething'er for 1.5 more years...

Oh, I think i have enough reason to complain (even though it's a choice i consciously made, surprisingly without the influence of drugs or alcohol). I did my four years in undergrad, and now i'm on my 4th year of grad school The "six years" is when i HOPE to get out....most people in my department stay longer...some 10 years or more. Those people are insane. If I don't get something published before I graduate, i'll probably have to take a post-doctoral position at a university...not necessarily bad, but just one more transition to being a "legitimate" professional.

After finishing my masters, I'd encourage anyone to do it (except my mom, who is nearing retirement age, and wants to get her masters in theology with no way to pay for it). Beyond that, it's a really really huge committment and lifestyle choice.

Oh, and by the way, i just had my wisdom teeth removed. I've had them in for quite a while, but they've been causing me problems. My mouth is still bloody. :p Just one more rite of passage for the 20-something set!

I was wondering if the six years was seperate from you undergrad or if you were including it in...I didn't want to assume....but I know most people who go on to do graduate work have already done their 4 years of undergrad, then most do 2 years of masters, then if necessary another 4 years of doctorate. I'm done after those 2 years of masters work...but I truly admire anyone who goes on to get a PhD....or for that matter...attempts to write a thesis or a dissertation....so good for you!!!

I had my wisdom teeth out a few winters ago....I found that the stiches bothered me more than anything else....that and my face blew up...my dad kept calling me chipmunk cheeks...I have to say though...I sure miss the wisdom those teeth brought (yeah...corny I know...I couldn't help it...)

***WARNING***GRAPHIC WISDOM TOOTH STORY AHEAD****

I'm sort of wondering why my surgeon didn't use MORE stitches. I have these gaping holes in the back of my mouth. I made rice pudding and ended up playing a real life version of Mattel's "Operation" when a grain of rice got stuck in the vast crevasse where one of the teeth used to be. I had to get the tweezers in there and pull it out without touching the sides of my gums. eeeeww!!!

Bad news....I still have those gaps...and I had mine out two years ago. I still get food stuck between my tooth and the great wall of gum in the back....The Dr. who took them out gave me like the syringe with a pointy end to flush out the hole with water and such...but ew...that's just gross....

Been there too. after I got mine out I went snowboarding with a buddy a few days later, lunch was a huge hunking burger three inches thick. After several days of milkshakes and pudding and whatnot, it took me two hours to finish the damn burger

but man was it good!

LOL...I actually used the whole wisdom teeth thing as an excuse to drink as many milk shakes as I wanted....it was glorious....

I don't think I have wisdom teeth. If you guys really want a fun operation and the excuse to eat ice cream for a month or so, get your tonsils out as an adult. Even doctors admit that's one of the most painful recoveries possible (of course they didn't tell me that first). There's one thing about being a 20 something...when we were growing up, there was an anti-surgery movement. At least in this area, if it wasn't life threatening, they didn't operate on kids...now I have to get all of these things fixed and it's about 1000 times more expensive and painful!

Hmmm.... I signed a year lease on a place this week. I move in March. Time to learn all about interior decorating...

Let's see...I had an appointment to help my my baby brother with his physics finals. So, I took him to school with me. Most of the girls I knew there started flirting with him. He ignored all of them the entire time since I was there and he HAD to study. I'm so proud of him! I'm not sure if all lil' siblings will quite turn out like him. This is so random, LoL.:rose:
