Envy of None - Envy of None (album)

Very nice. I wouldn't call it "industrial", for that description to fit it would need more stompy beats and a lot more atonality. It is electronics-heavy and very frosty and sometimes distant, but always anchored by beautiful vocals. Sometimes I hear Heather Nova, sometimes Garbage and at other times even The Eden House. Very well done. Positive surprise.

Comparing this to Rush and complaining it doesn't sound at all like Rush would be... hm, like complaining that Dan Swanö's Nightingale don't sound like Edge of Sanity. Sometimes I don't get metalheads - claiming to be so open-minded and then acting the complete opposite.

Beautifully said, both paragraphs.

I don't get the naysayers. Lifeson was only one third Rush. I truly believe it can't be Rush without all three as each was so uniquely distinctive, and that sadly is never happening again. Envy of None is well crafted, beautifully executed music.

After Rush's covers album, Feedback, I thought Geddy and Alex might go, together or individually, in a more classic rock sounding direction, but I absolutely love where Lifeson/Envy of None went.

El Primer Androide

TALOS

New instrumental jazz/prog from a trio out of Hondorus. Nice

Flamborough Head : Looking For John Maddock

Dutch neo prog. Nothing special, though I've always enjoyed them - especially since the new female vocalist joined them.

Flying Circus : Pomp

Very good German prog

I gave them a pretty good review (lemmeno if you want to see the review)

FromUZ : Audio Diplomacy

FromUZ : Quartus Artifactus - Discs 1 & 2

These guys are from Uzbekistan (as the name suggests) and they're truly excellent. However, the style of music on these 2 (3) albums doesn't appeal to me that much. All instrumental (which I like) but a bit too jazzy for my tastes.

Yet their "Seventh Story" album is very different, and I rate it among my all-time favorites.

House Of Not : The Walkabout Of A Nexter Niode - Part 1 - "Off The Path", and Part 2 - "Sexus"

The Halo Effect - Days Of The Lost

Time and time again I have bitched about how shitty In Flames have been in recent years, especially the non-vocals of Anders Fridén and the loss of everything which made them cool in the beginning (mostly those unearthly twin guitar leads backed by fat death metal sound).

Seems like most of the former In Flames members had the same idea. The Halo Effect is basically ex-In Flames members without Björn Gelotte and Anders Friden. And to top it all off, they hired Dark Tranquility's Mikael Stanne for vocals (which probably is too much cookie monster for Litfan - consider yourself warned), which is a delicious topping on the whole cake. No idea what happened behind the scenes of IF (and I couldn't care less), but if the rest of The Halo Effect's music is even close to this banger, I'll be a very happy intolerant metalhead. :) THIS is how In Flames should have sounded after Clayman, not whatever Reroute To Remain and the follow-ups turned out to be.

Iluvatar : A Story Two days Wide

Neo prog from Baltimore. 3 of the band members are personal friends of mine. They haven't recorded or played much lately, though they keep promising that they'll get back to it. They peaked when they toured South America, and returned home to open for Marillion.

Iona : Woven Chord

Morning moods, and time for some gentle Celtic sounds. Iona leaves the Enyas / McKennitts / Clannads... of the world in the dust. Just as engaging, but far Iona has more accomplished musicians, and more intelligent songwriting.

(A friend of mine is married to the guitarist.)

Luca Turilli : Prophet of the Last Eclipse

Pure power metal - a solo album from the guitarist of Rhapsody / Rhapsody Of Fire.

All very predictable, but very well done and a fun occasional listen.

Rousseau : Flower In Asphalt

Middle-of-the-road symphonic prog from France, circa 1980

Threshold : Wounded land

Somewhere between prog metal and neo prog. Better than most in the genre.

Uriah Heep : The Magicians Birthday

Gotta spin these guys once every few years! :)

I saw them live in the mid-2000s, at a 2-day thing called "HeepFest", in Trenton, NJ. Three bands on the Saturday and the Sunday, and (obviously) 'Heep headlined both nights.

Agree. We bought their "Tales from Outer Space" album and it spins ever so often. Very Floyd-y

Cool.

They're a good occasional listen. I have 5 of their albums. I met them at ROSfest around 15 years ago - interviewed the band, and kept in email contact with them for a while after. Very nice guys.

Their stage show was good, and the guitarist was excellent on stage. His skills aren't shown anywhere on their albums, AFAIC. He played a Telecaster, and had a very Gilmour-esque sound.

I seem to recall that they played ROSfest again a few years later. But if they did, I didn't catch that show.
