Kirk Hammett - Portals

The exact opposite of what you'd expect from Metallica's band leader.

It's all-instrumental, guitar-led but with plenty of other instrumentation including inserts by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. It shows tremendous songwriting ability and impressive technical performances showcase Hammett's skills in a whole new way.

It's heavyish in parts, elegant in parts, and it is not metal, IMO. Energetic, with constant tempo shifts - it's "filmic", as if it's trying to tell a story. (Maybe it is?)

Interesting, and worth many more spins.

Alt-J - Taro

This song is very dear and personal to me. It has always gotten me through depressive streaks and negative thoughts. I feel at one with everyone when I am immersed in it.

Since a main character in a story I'm working on exhibits such characteristics, or closely resembling them ...

Helion Prime - Into The Black Hole

Not an Ayreon cover, but a refreshingly honest bit of metal with some clever harmonies and tons of energy. The mix sucks though. Let's see how they improved since 2016...

That's a weird combo if I've ever seen one.

It's great. There's a really good clip somewhere where they talk about the show. This was pretty early in Taylor's career I think, and apparently she really liked Def Leppard, and she was really nervous about performing with them.

Here's them doing Taylor's "Love Story" - audio only, there used to be a video of the performance, but it disappeared and there's only this...

This is another one from the same show I really like - "When Love and Hate Collide"

I'm listening to "Jim Cornette's 1987-1988 JCP Deep Dive Omnibus".

3 hours of reminiscing and fun.

Kirk Hammett : Portals

Listening to this short EP (yet) again.

Metallica's guitarists does a solo all-instrumental piece with neo-classical flavor, and an almost sound-track vibe. Solid songwriting, excellent performances, and a pleasing listen. And it's nothing like Metallica's music.

This will be a candidate for the best-of-2022 list.

OU - Farewell

Prog metal from China. Very jazzy, weird and fascinating, poppy in parts, Meshuggah levels of poly-EVERYTHING in others. This is nothing I'd listen to for fun, but I'm going to try the album to expand my horizon. There are two more songs on InsideOut's channel, with "Travel" being my favorite of the bunch.

A guy in my statistics class led me on to this. I don't know much about it yet, differences in style, historical significance, app for drums I find it strangely soothing.

Good stuff! Of course it doesn't sound like Metallica, the drummer is much better... ;) Joke aside, this is something I'm gonna listen to for fun.

Exploring some obscure metal - pretty niche, you wouldn't have heard of it:

Ingested Void - Burn the Gates of Heaven with the Flames of Hell
Chaos Surrounds - Surrender to the Grave
In Fire, In Darkness - We Are Finality
Obsidian Nightmares - What Lives Beneath the Sunrise
Scythefucker - Subsidizing the Funeral Industry
Pale Hammer - The Heavy Distant Sound of a World's End
Methbender - Empty Bottles and Bad Luck
