What Are You Listening to Now 7.0

My favorite lyric:
“And so make your choice joy
For joy belongs to you”

What your soul sings - Massive Attack (with Sinead O'Connor)

Let 3 - Mama ŠČ!

I laughed at their wiki:

"In December 2006 the band was sanctioned by police after an open-air concert in Varaždin where they performed their usual show (which included partial nudity.) The band's defense that they were not naked because they had corks in their buttocks did not convince the judge..."

A lovely little song for Valentine's Day.

And for those playing at home, the correct audience response to the last line in the chorus, "Am I ever going to see your face again?" is:

No way!
Get fucked!
Fuck off!

Lynrd Skynerd; Sweet home Alabama

What follows might be more than you ever wanted to know about that song, and the band. First, many people know that Neil Young wrote Southern Man and Alabama about events there in the 1960s and the culture that surrounded them, and that Ronnie Van Zant wrote Sweet Home Alabama as a direct response:

Verse 2
Well I heard Mr. Young sing about her
Well I heard ol' Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern Man don't need him around, anyhow

According to this article:
Young came to regret the song that started it all. "'Alabama' richly deserved the shot Lynyrd Skynyrd gave me with their great record," he wrote in his memoir, Waging Heavy Peace, in 2012. "I don't like my words when I listen to it today. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, too easy to misconstrue."

Not long after three of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd tragically died in a plane crash in 1977, Young performed a medley of "Alabama" and "Sweet Home Alabama" as a tribute. According to Rolling Stone, he's never played Alabama again since:

For context, Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded their first album at a legendary studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but it was unreleased because of a record company screw-up: the back side of the demo tape was played by an inexperienced tech to A&R guys they were pitching, resulting in a terrible "muffled" sound, contributing to delaying Skynyrd's debut by more than a year. Ronnie Van Zant was royally pissed at The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, otherwise known as The Swampers, because he thought they were to blame for a bad recording and/or mix. More than a year later, as a more experienced engineer played the tape for other execs, the reason became plain, and Ronnie called Jimmy Johnson from the studio control room, apparently in tears, to apologize:

Amazing true story.

Verse 4
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two (Yes, they do)
Lord, they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue, well now, how 'bout you?

Meanwhile, Ronnie and Neil remained great fans of each other's work:

Years later, another band from Alabama told the story in their own song in a concept album about Skynyrd's final days, which catapulted them to (lesser) stardom. This is Drive-By Truckers, whose lead vocalist on the song, Patterson Hood, is the son of Swamper bassist David Hood. Turn this one up:

From that song's lyrics, about Neil:

So he wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But ol' Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the Lord

From the article linked earlier, Ronnie Van Zant is reported to have been wearing his Neil Young t-shirt when he was buried.

For what it's worth, a wonderful documentary was made ten years ago about the Muscle Shoals scene. Here's a trailer:

A full version is available (for free!) on YT. The section on Lynyrd Skynyrd starts at 1:18:53, showing Ronnie wearing his Neil Young t-shirt in one live performance. Aretha Franklin and Etta James are also featured.

Her voice is so pure - I imagine a young Ella F, Sarah V or Linda R sounded like her. She won the well-deserved New Artist award at the latest Grammy’s.
