Yeah, firing them wasn't a good option. Unfortunately that's another place where small government failed us. Any company that has grown so large that they can walk into Congress basically threaten to crash the economy and not get laughed out of the building are officially too large. Not a single CEO of any of the companies you listed believes that and even the defense contractors buy that....they know damn well they wouldn't have fuck all if there weren't all these publicly educated engineers and whatevers they employ. Certainly not at the prices they are now.

It's a subsidy.....a labor force training subsidy....engineers only cost 130k a year because socialist state universities crank out thousands of them. And we are all better for it, yay government welfare!!!

If it weren't for weapons research/space race starting in WWII into the cold war we wouldn't have any of the tech we have today.

Russia failed? They are top 10 in almost everything. Right up there with China.
They are the 10th largest economy going by GDP. Second most powerful military. It's worth remembering that heading in to WWII Russia was still mostly a joke of a nation. Their military power was "Winter is coming" and almost overnight they became one of only two super powers, defacto leader of about half the goddamn planet. If that's not a success story then such a thing doesn't exist.

That's not to say we should emulate Russia in any serious way but. . .failure is a strong word here.
