What makes *you* an author?

I am an author because there is always another story to tell.

/I'd like to point out that as far as sharing, Emily Dickinson had less than 10 poems published in her lifetime. She wasn't big on sharing. But I'd still consider her an author. Even if she had kept every single poem locked away her entire lifetime./

I'd point out she [E.D.] fits my definition, since I said, "_eventually_ strangers pay good money..."

J.

but even if they never did, she would still be a writer.

also, did she only then become a writer *after death*?

Didn't BlackAdder say something about a man who dropped his trousers and stood by the end of a corridor, pretending to be a doorknob..?
He also said something about being "rogered by an omnibus."

"Sir, you think that because we are actors we'll have sex with everybody."
"I would think being actors, you'd be lucky to have sex with anybody."

And let's not forget Prince Regent George's friends at the Naughty Hellfire club who'll "pull your pants down and stick a crumpet up your backside."

That was from the episode about Pitt the Younger and his brothers, Pitt the Even Younger and Pitt the Toddler.

Poor Pitt the Younger was a human toast rack...

You are a writer when you write....day in....day out.....well or sick.
You write every day. You amass reams of toilet paper. You cull out a few pearls. You wall paper your wall with rejection notices from publishers...and thennn. You get published.
And still you write. Day in and day out. Until they carry you off in a pine box.

In order to write well you have to read well.

The planet is covered with a billion critics. But if you write what you know and put your heart into it...you just might make a connection with the reader. You might touch a cord of reality that they have tasted in life. And then it is all worthwhile.

Just make a commitment to an hour....or half hour every day. And keep on plugging away. Don't stop. :nana: :nana:

and good luck

I have decided that something that makes me an author is the writers block that's kept me from writing anything for four months.

does that count?

please say yes.

Chicky, what makes you an author is you calling yourself an author.

The question is, are you an author who actually WRITES things?

ONLY four months?!

I'm envious.

Maybe I should give you my ideas 'cause I can't seem to find time to get them on paper. :p

I have the ability to tell a story and the desire to share it. That makes me an author.

The hard question would be "what makes a good author?" If someone has a formula for that could they let me in on the secret?

no doubt!

chicklet's been gone for some time now.

But what happened to raphy?

He moved, got married, drifted away... like some do. :(

He is around now and again, I see him pop up on Yahoo from time to time, but I never say hello, cos I'm always hiding and I'm shy. ;)

I've always admired your shyness. It's so endearing.

Cough-cough--Bullshit--Cough

Raphy, WhisperingSurrender, Chicklet, Mathgirl,

I miss them all.

I speak to Chicklet every now and again. I sent her a blind e-mail hoping she was okay and she replied. Apparently she can't come near Lit for personal psychological reasons, but she says "Hi" to all the regulars.

I'm not an author because I haven't written anything that is only loved by Literature Professors and which all students groan when they see it on the syllabus.

But hell, I like being a writer better anyway.

I may have just missed the quote, but I saw the original post.

that's really too bad.

but at least we all still have her cute av to look at and her stories to read if we so want.

As I understand it an author is just the creator of a written work, so I guess that is pretty broad. I didn't consider myself an author until I started making money at it. Still, I just think of myself as a storyteller first and foremost.
