I was reading an article that was advancing the theory that he'd been taking anti-malaria drugs in preparation for deployment, and that he was one of those "1 in 6000" people that experience side effects. What are your thoughts on that?
I haven't seen that particular article today (but I will look it up in a bit, sounds interesting), but I would the validity of that claim would be based on which antimalarial he was on. Mefloquine is the one that I believe causes the most psychological symptoms, but it's not the military's number one choice because of that very reason. If he was on it, and if it did cause some sort of paranoia or violent tendencies, one would hope that his training would help him recognize what was going on and seek help.
Also, I think the 1 in 6,000 (I've also seen 1 in 10,000 documented in another report elsewhere) refers to total psychological side effects, the majority of which are mild like dizziness or headaches. And females are almost twice as likely as males to have those side effects, so I'm not so sure it's a valid claim. I guess we'll see when he wakes up or they release the results of any blood work they do on him.
